Tiparos is the boy I've always been in love with but didn't know it until he was gone. In my case, I moved out of town for a few years and missed this incredibly tasty Thai food like nobody's business. And as in any good romance, once we met again, after years of solid character building, the reunion was too blissful for words. Which is why you have to taste Tiparos food for yourself. The restaurant itself is comfortable and pleasingly decorated, but delivery will do the job. I'm extremely partial to the mild curry chicken and the vegetable pot stickers. The owner takes merited pride in both his restaurant's food and customer service. Example: On New Year's Eve almost 10 years ago, he gave my then boyfriend and myself complimentary Thai beer with our dinner. I can't remember what the beer tasted like, but the gesture has stuck with me. I have to say I LOVE Tiparos' pad thai. My favorite by far. I also really like their fried tofu. Their rama chicken is just okay, but their pad thai definitely gives them the edge in my book. I ate here last night and I'm disappointed. The shrimp fried rice was bad. It had no Thai flavor to it. I could have made it at home. I walked a few blocks from work to get it and I wish that I had not. The I also ordered pot stickers that were oily and flabby. What a great find Tiparos Thai and Sushi Bar was. A dear friend of mine treated me to the Van Gogh Exhibit and Tiparos was right around the corner at 1540 N. Clark. The atmosphere was welcoming and our waitress was super kind and friendly. The prices are outrageously affordable for the area! The food, in my opinion was fresh, lively, "just right" amount of food and vegetables. I even asked to switch my mixed vegetable and chicken sauce to my friend's seafood oyster sauce and the chef took my plate and re-prepared with the oyster sauce, which was so delightful. We also enjoyed a dessert (generous scoop) of Coconut Ice Cream with real coconut pieces. We will definitely return in the near future! read more

I came here the other night with a groupon. I made a reservation on opentable and the place was pretty empty - maybe because it was a Sunday night. It's a great location - right on North & Clark. Simple to get to and pretty decent sized for an Asian restaurant which are usually so small. We had the crab Rangoon to start. It was very good - a staple in my book when dining out for Thai food! We also ordered the Spider Maki which was completely unnecessary since we both also ordered an entree of Pad See Eiw with beef. My first time having this dish but my boyfriend's favorite. Hello brown rice maki rolls! I've been on the sushi scene only 3 years and from the start I've been searching for places that offer brown rice. shout it from the rooftops people, I have found it! Spicy tuna, perfect; crunchy shrimp tempura, perfect; summer maki, perfect! The owner was so accomodating. he kept coming over and talking to us. It was busy and we were bothing him with questions like "how is that sticky rice (mango and sticky rice dessert ) made?" and "what kind of mangoes are found in Thailand"' Yeah, Paul is cool. My best friend lives in the city and this has been her go-to place for Asian cuisine for many years. I have eaten here with her numerous times and it's always wonderful, even take out! Great dishes include: fried rice, brown rice, pot stickers, crab rangoon, beef and broccoli, chicken satay, and their crazy spicy noodles. My review is based on all of the take out I get. I live very close to this place and I tried it on a whim when I first moved in and had no groceries. They have a great deal where you get free dumplings with an order over $20. I got crab rangoon as an appetizer as well and those were AMAZING. Since that first fateful night I have ordered the crab rangoon as a snack pretty regularly, at least once a week. The curry dishes are good. My friend has gotten the pad thai and a few other dishes as well and she had enjoyed them all. They have good specials for sushi during the lunch time hours. Tiparos is my typical Gold Coast Thai go-to, even though I'm not completely satisfied with my order, but close. Crab rangoon is awesome (but like most, doesn't travel super-well for delivery). I love theirs and Lan's! I typically order the Rice Stick Noodle Bowl (no soup) but I think this is the reason I question my faithfulness...I always find the beef to be underflavored and too chewy. This time I asked for a side of broth, and when mixing the chili sauce in, that helped a lot. Maybe I should try something else, huh? I also got the banana-strawberry smoothy - first time it was perfect, this time there were huge chunks of ice. As for their online ordering - when paying with a card the website doesn't actually tender the payment and says you give the delivery guy the card...well expect to be called 10 mintues later with someone confirming your order and asking for card info - being said, just call in the first place! Pretty standard fusion thai/sushi place... some modernized sushi rolls and such. My sister and I had come here on a groupon and over ordered (in our typical fashion.) I came here on a Saturday around 2pm with a group of 6 and the place was empty. We came because a friend of mine had gone to Latin for high school and apparently this place was her favorite lunch spot. We were served relatively fast but we could have used a little more attention, especially as we were ordering. Since we were one of two groups in the room, with the other group being 2 people, they should've been able to take care of us faster. We ordered the sample platter and I found it okay. The crab rangoon was edible but wasn't something I would order again. There wasn't enough crab in it; it seemed to be mostly cream cheese filling. I ordered the Mild Curry with Chicken. I found it truly delicious. The curry was perfectly flavored and it had just enough vegetables and chicken to make it worth it. It was spicy enough to make my taste buds rejoice, but not spicy enough to make my eyes water. I tried a bit of what everyone got and overall found it all pretty decent. The dish that truly stood out for this restaurant was their peanut sauce - we ordered a plate of it for the table and oh my was it well used. It got to the point where we had nothing to dip in it so we started licking the bowl. One thing I didn't like was that to change my chicken curry to beef curry or tofu curry, it would've cost $1.00. If I had been vegetarian, that would have pissed me off. The fact that a bowl of rice cost $1.00 was a bit on the higher side but I'm used to paying extra for rice at Thai restaurants, even though many dishes require the rice. I've definitely had better Thai food but this wasn't bad. Will I go again? Only if I'm in the area. It's nothing I would travel to. read more

I have now been to Tiparos about 10-15 times. I ask myself why I return every single time, likely it's because the close proximity to my home and the food is pretty decent. But the service is HORRIBLE. If you are looking for a quick Thai/sushi restaurant this is not the place. I have not even one time had bearable service. I thought this place was great. I ordered the Chirashi which is just sliced sushi fish over a bed of delicious rice. They also had really good Saki. My friends and I had visitors in town and we chose this place because it was close, the type of food we wanted, and, of course, BYOB. A quick breakdown: The atmosphere: The restaurant is spacious, which is appreciated as most restaurants in this area are cramped with a lack of seating. We made a reservation for 8 and were seated right away on a Saturday night. We went around 9. The food: I had the rice stick noodle - no soup, with chicken and it was good. It wasn't what I was expecting and was just okay -- I'm not a huge fan of chicken, which is why I ordered beef (see below) and the noodles were overcooked. I would probably order it with the soup next time. We shared 2 orders of edamame and crab rangoon and everyone enjoyed the appetizers. Everything came out hot and quickly. I've been hear previously and enjoyed the pad thai, which is always a simple choice. The service: This is my main complaint. The waitress took my order and I specifically said I would like beef. She even repeated my order and said beef. She brought out my dish with chicken and when I told her that I requested beef, she went back to her ticket and she showed me that she had written down chicken. Now, that's great that that's what you wrote down, but that's still NOT what I ordered. I told her that I ordered beef though and she did NOTHING --- She stared at me, extremely rude. She looked at me and did not offer to replace my food, but insisted that I was the one who was incorrect. Next time: Just replace the food with what the customer ordered. I've been going to Tiparos sporadically throughout the last ten years, primarily because I live a block away. Ive gotten to know the owner however the quality has incredibly gone down hill while prices kept going up. Last straw was when my order was completely incorrect for takeout, did not get a single apology and had to wait an additional 20 min at the restaurant. A year after my first review and I'm FINALLY eating their sushi. Went here on a Friday night before a movie, looking for a quick, inexpensive, but somewhat healthy option for dinner. I love that Tiparos has great thai food for my non-sushi-eating fiance, and sushi for me...who is always in the mood for yum-o sushi. We just happened to be there during the sushi roll happy hour (yes, it's the same time my grandmother would eat, bite me)...20% off each roll, not bad! I had a spicy tuna, a california, and a few pieces of salmon sushi. The fish was fresh...the rolls were good. A definite solid for sushi at that reasonable price. Tip-a-who? I've eaten at Tiparos dozens of times for the last 15 years. My mother lives around the corner and it's our "go to" place in the hood. It's an attractive restaurant in the historic 100 year old Germania Place building. Hardwood floors and wood accents give the place a cozy feeling. It's super casual. Families have no problem bringing the little ones here, that's for sure! The front room can get a bit chilly but the back room is much warmer. Going to the bathroom requires you to visit the lobby of Germania Place which is actually kinda cool. Parking is easy. While Tiparos calls itself a Thai restaurant, it's actually Pan-Asian. Egg rolls, chop suey and sushi are all on the menu. Dishes aren't very eclectic and this is a good place to go if you or your guests don't have a very adventurous palate, i.e. mom. Sushi is just OK. What are you doing in a Thai restaurant eating sushi anyways? If you stick to the Thai basics, you can't go wrong. Prices are super cheap for the hood. Entrees cost about the same as a value meal at McDonalds. I like the giant soup entrees for $6.50. Tiparos isn't a destination type of restaurant. I wouldn't go out of the way to eat there. It's not a "date night" kind of place either, unless, of course, the only other place you can afford is McDonalds. However, Tiparos makes a good lunch stop and a nice casual place to enjoy some tasty food. read more

Due to a bad Pad Thai incident I had not eaten at Tiparos in at least 8+ years.......yeah....that's how bad it was.....BUT......I gave them another chance recently and redemption is theirs! Grabbed some take out on a busy day.....got my ol' Thai stand-by.....Spicy Basil Chicken. After having eaten it numerous times on my travels in Thailand (and god it was good!).....it's what I use to judge the authenticity and quality of a Thai restaurant by.....and this time Tiparos passed the test!! First off.....they use both white and dark meat and grind the chicken.....the way it should be done so that all the juicy flavors seep into the nooks n' crannies.....instead of just coating the outside of some dry-ass pieces of white chicken breast......which a ton of places in Chicago do.....I think they don't want to scare off the whiteys with....*gasp*...dark meat! Flavors were spot on....could have been a bit spicier for me but dish was not greasy or heavy....just really really f-ing good! I got extra veggies added to mine....for $1 extra and I highly recommend if you need to get your greens in! I also did an order of the chicken egg rolls....'cause I like some crunchy with my meal.....they were good but not great.....the order is actually 6 mini rolls and they are mainly wrapper with not a lot of filling.....boo :( Ohhhhhh and another thing you should know.....rice does not come with your meal......you can order a small for $1 or a large for $2......I am not a fan of this trend. The noodle dishes are the same price as the entrees.....they are not charged $1 extra for their noodles.....so why should I pay $1 more for rice? It just doesn't make sense and reeks of cheapness in my opinion. Overall.....I'm going with 3 stars for now.....Tiparos still has a little ways to go with me (I mean how do you screw up Pad Thai?).....but I will def be back.....even though it's a little expensive with all the extra charges.....ahem rice charge.......the food was good, authentic and it's close to home......next on my list is the Bamee and BBQ Pork Noodle Soup! read more

This place is only a few blocks from my parents house where I lived growing up and was across from my high school. For years I went there multiple times each month, now I go whenever I'm visiting Chicago, maybe 4 times a year. I am shocked by all the negative reviews of this place. The interior is very clean and has a nice, fresh ambiance. The servers are neither the best nor worst that I've ever had, but they are always polite, fast, and get your order right. The reason this lace deserves 5 stars, though, is the food. I have literally traveled the world looking for pad sai ewe or crab rangoon that come anywhere close to what you can get here. I also love their cucumber salad, pot stickers, and just about anything else I've tried there. They also have fantastic bubble tea. read more

I tried this place out for lunch on a weekend an it was alright. The restaurant is nice and cute and the waitstaff was very attentive. Unfortunately the food was hit and miss. I ordered the crab rangoon which was too cheesy and not enough crabby and crunchy. The yellow curry with chicken was great and had a slight kick to it. Thai iced tea was yummy too. However, the price for lunch was a lot higher than I anticipated around 20 bucks for lunch. I came to Tiparos on a Saturday night with a group of friends and was glad to find this spot. Someone had bought a Groupon for it, which is how we had ended up there. The place itself was fairly big, but not crowded at all for a Saturday night at 9. All 4 of us got a special Maki roll (I got the Summer Maki and would recommend it), edamame and pad woon sen (another thing I would recommend). The menu is pretty extensive and had a lot of items I'd like to go back and try. Everything was VERY reasonable. The most expensive Maki was around $13. They are trying with the ambiance- it still feels like a standard Thai place, but nice enough for date material. Overall, had a good food at a good price- I'll be back! I got my order via Seamless, so keep this in mind as I speak my mind... I order two items from this place: Pad Thai with chicken, and crab rangoon. The Pad Thai was fail: boring, not much taste, even when one puts the hot sauce on it - even with the lemon too, nothing helped. Also, looks if the color of this dish got scared the crap from itself - Pad Thai from Panang or My Thai is waaaaay better in looks and taste. Stay away from this one. The crab rangoon wasn't too bad, fairly tasty but the sweet and sour wasn't nearly as good...too bad I ran out f packets of the generic sweet and sour sauce. Great place for soup, especially the BBQ or Tom Yum. Sushi is slightly overpriced for what you get. The interior is nice and cozy, and the wait staff is quite good. I do enjoy how their sushi samplers have a better variety of interesting rolls, and not just the standard california/spicy tuna/salmon that I seem to see at so many other sushi restaurants. It's also great since when you order through grubhub, it's pretty easy to buy enough to get those extra potstickers for free. My main complaint is how long it takes their takeout to arrive- it's normally at least an hour and a half, and that's on a good day. The end average of 3.5 stars for Tiparos seems just about right. It serves decent food that can be outright enjoyable at times or at least isn't offensive in some way. I took a bite of my dining companions' standard fare (pad thai, green curry, etc.) and yeah, everything seems to fall into the decent-basic or decent-plus category. My massaman curry was affirmatively good, though, with a creamy and salty broth and potatoes cooked just the right amount. Can't speak for the sushi here since I've never tried it. I guess some people have had service issues but I'm usually ok here. The staff is friendly enough and efficient. read more
