I ordered an iced vanilla latte and a blueberry muffin. I was given the muffin immediately and my latte was ready a few minutes later. I sat inside where there were a couple groups of local college ladies at tables and an elderly businessman reading a newspaper (yes, they still exist). The latte was refreshing on this blazing hot day but the vanilla flavor was barely there. The muffin was amazing! So fresh and moist and stuffed with blueberries. It was a relaxing spot to hang out for a while, much better than standing in a corner of a women's clothing store waiting...and waiting...

Visiting our friends from Long Beach, they recommended we go to Nautical Bean over by Trader Joe's on the south end of the San Luis Obispo city area. They have a great menu, good music plan, diverse customers on the Sunday morning we went in. Super friendly cashier who walked me through a very diverse and fun coffee menu. Love the classic 80s feel of this location. Everything from Farra Fawcett, Johnny Cash, Depeche Mode, the classic clash poster, Darth Vader, a beautiful Bowie wall mural, and a Sesame Street skateboard collection. Not to mention some awesome Star Wars lunch pails on the high shelves. Don't miss those! And, there's a millennium falcon, staring down at you as you get your refill for coffee, Long live the rebellion! And nice clean spacious restroom as well. Great job. There was a short line to wait in before ordering. My family and I got a Bon Bon latte and Abuela's coffee to share with each other. Whilst waiting, we admired the shop which is really cute!! A kind of art deco aesthetic with tables of course. There were some items on sale which appeared to be all local businesses. After a couple of minutes, the drinks were ready to go. They were sooo good. I particularly enjoyed the Bon Bon due to the chocolatey sweetness of the cream on top. Overall, a very successful trip to Buen Día and I'd come back!!

Should Have Known Better…read more.... I've been to the Nautical Bean on Los Osos Valley Road a few times since my review in March 2026 and each visit earned 4 or 5 stars. Not bad! But I went back on Monday, June 8th and had a very different experience. I ordered 2 small cups of hot chai with extra foam, extra hot and 1/2 sweet. When they were done, both were "heavy" meaning they felt like there was no foam. I checked and yup...no foam. I mentioned it to the barista who said "no problem. I'll do them over". They were done quickly, but still felt "heavy". I didn't want to go back and figured "it's just me". I got into my car and tried one. It was 90% the same as before. She simply scraped a sliver of the drink off the top and added a touch of foam. Plus...the liquid was "thin" meaning she nearly scalded the drink to get it hot. The 2nd chai was the same way. And the shop wasn't even busy at the time. Everyone at the Nautical Bean is friendly and the vibe is great, but next time I'll take my own advice...even if that means going back to the barista twice to get things right.

The same situation has arisen with a couple of other businesses over the years, and those have responded with rudeness, gaslighting, and unprofessionality. The point is that any small business has to deal with things that come up. It's not whether or not things come up, it's how we deal with them, and I will make a point of supporting them as a small business in the future, because of how they dealt with the situation that arose.

But shouldn't have been enough to irritate him as much as it did and he rolled his eyes at me twice as I tried to quickly decide on the options he gave. He ended up ringing me up for an iced vanilla americano which is absolutely not what I ordered. And he and I had discussed them adding milk to my drink which also didn't happen. I then asked how much honey was in the honey latte, and she responded that they measure by grams instead of pumps, then said it was "probably about two pumps." After I ordered and paid, she walked away without saying thank you or letting me know they would call my name or announce when my order was ready. When I picked up my drink, no one acknowledged me or thanked me. The latte itself was just okay, not bad, but nothing memorable or worth making a trip back for. Unfortunately, the customer service left a much bigger impression than the coffee. Even though I arrived shortly before closing, the shop was still open, and I don't think customers should feel like they're inconveniencing the staff for ordering during posted business hours.
