Pros - Safe location. Perfect for kids 10-17 as well as adults. The skating rink itself is in excellent condition. Pricing is fair. Employees are kind, efficient and diligent in enforcing rules for safety! This is a family business and the owner is a good man. Vintage arcade games the ones you would have enjoyed in the 80's and 90's. Draws a great crowd of kids who are just trying to have a good time and aren't starting any trouble. One of the workers busted a girl for under age drinking. They approached the obvious 14 year old and said she had alcohol on her breath and needed to leave. She argued back with a beet red face but he was right I smelled it and I wasn't even standing near her. The point was he gave a darn about under age drinking. A lot of establishments would have ignored it and said as long as they didn't see it they didn't care not this guy he made her call a parent to come get her because she wasn't allowed to stay and skate smelling like booze. He learns the kids names and calls them out like a baby sitter when they are misbehaving. They have a last 30 minutes dance part one boy dives on the floor and starts humping it. The DJ stops the music and says,"Keep it clean." Ha ha ha poor kid was mortified - hilarious! Cons - The vintage arcade games have not been cleaned and looked like they haven't been moved in 30 years. One reviewer said the carpet smells like dog urine she was very wrong it smells like cat pee instead. The strong ammonia smell that can only come from a cat is all you smell in the concessions and arcade area. The decorations on the walls are a time capsule of 1985. I seriously haven't seen that Garfield poster since I was very young but not only is the art work old it hasn't been dusted or removed from the walls for a cleaning. This place is a cesspool of bacteria that's multiplying and having crazy sex all over this dusty immobile games and art work. The carpet hmmmm it actually looks new but that's not possible because it stinks and the style of carpet hasn't been for sale in multiple decades. It also clearly hasn't been cleaned because in certain parts it's completely black. There's carpet in the bathroom.... nooooo how do you put carpet in a bathroom frequented by kids? Imagine if your middle school bathroom had carpet yeah, it's that bad. Even with all of the cons listed let's be honest there's a worse place you could send your kid on a Friday night. These people actually seem to care about the safety of kids and try to make sure they are safe. Yeah, it smells a wee bit but you know who doesn't complain about it, kids! If you don't care kid I don't care either let's skate! Lmao

New carpeting!!

Last night we were pleasantly surprised to find newly installed carpeting on the floor! Much better! (I'm sure it would be very costly to re-carpet the benches, but that would be great). Nice!

Let's get right into it: I have never experienced a roller skating rink, where the DJ is cursing in between playing songs for people to skate to. SAY WHA!???!!! This is a place of recreational family fun with CHILDREN, seniors and other. Why in the world would you carry on in such a manner? WHY!? I just stood there with my mouth hanging open like "dear God this is not happening...Like why!?...". The music/the sound: The only way to describe in one word would be "horrible". Not sure at all what was happening with the speakers in this rink, but the music was distorted. Like having a huge speaker in the trunk of a vehicle and the music is muffled....kinda sketchy/grainy. When I think of the roller rink experience, music is a MAJOR part. That is what people skate to. Why does it sound so bad? I can't assume there are sound checks, lol. But how does one tell if the speakers and such are working at full capacity for a quality experience? *shrug* Lastly, the rental skates/skate room: I am not sure when half decent customer service went out the door, but it sure did make the process of obtaining skate rentals a chore. My family and I stood waiting for 10min for someone to assist us with getting skates. Just a long line of people standing around. Paid money to skate and no one is there to distribute the skates. Hellooooooo? Where are all the people!!?? I ended up having to go back to the front of the rink, finding someone, just to ask if someone would please send an employee to help all the people that were awaiting rental skates. *sigh* Once we received the skates, my 3 year old little cousin began to skate and the ENTIRE BACK OF THE SKATES WHEELS FELL OFF! Screws and all. Wow. Thank God she did not get injured and no one else. Imagine a small child skating, she falls because HER WHEELS FROM THE SKATE DETACH FROM THE SKATE. Yeah, that happened in real life. I will not lie, I was just disappointed to say the least. So, are these skates not getting "CALIBRATED and CHECKED"? No. It's a no. No way, no how. This is my experience. I tell no lies. I would suggest enter at your own risk. It was not a good time for me. And again, it was disappointing to say the least. Suggestion: Bring your own skates. Until next time friends :)

There's also a huge overlook where many of the spectators watched from, because the bleachers were not much higher than the glass. The only complaint is that there are only two stairwells to get to the balcony... one on the far side of the ice and one through the bar. Slightly challenging with little ones. As far as the Ninja Park, we didn't use it, but we were able to observe it from the lobby and it is quite the adventure! There were tons of inflatable spaces to jump, climb, and play on. There were long slides and trampoline areas and you could tell the kids were having a blast. The concession stand was hopping, here. The smell of the fresh pizza was awesome. The line for concessions was always packed and the prices were above average, but still reasonable. Lastly, the local police was handing out for a few hours while we were there, so it felt safe.

These days, it seems, they offer packages where people can rent out a party room along with ice time in the adjoining studio rink for the exclusive use of all the guests. The perfect setting for her hockey player beau. On the invitations, we were told to bring our sticks and pucks to shoot around on the ice if we liked, which surprised me a little because the studio I remembered in the past was not painted with blue lines, face off circles and creases. It is now. Anyhow, everyone had a blast. So much so that they had to peel a couple of us off the ice when our time was done. The party was a huge success and now we're thinking about renting the studio to have a mini game or two in the near future. Time to dust off the pads, I guess...and update my Blue Cross policy.

They have a nice party room and a small studio rink that can both be rented for a reasonable cost for birthday parties and such. The only downside is their extremely limited public skate hours (currently only on Friday and Saturday nights for an hour and a half) which means it is often very crowded, and there is not a lot of freestyle time available either. A few years ago, the little HF ice arena was nationally known because its figure skating program was truly outstanding. The synchronized skating teams (the HF Icettes) occasionally won the ISI or USFSA national championship, and often took silver or gold medals, earning them frequent invitations to skate in professional ice shows such as Superstars on Ice, etc. Unfortunately, a couple of years ago, the park district stopped supporting the arena, and the Icettes disbanded. Its sad. Within a couple of years a great ice arena with a national reputation for its stellar figure skating program became a good ice arena that few have ever heard of. Still a great place to skate though, if you can get there during the few times they are open.

The entry/exit doors at every other rink are motion sensor activated electric sliders. At Southwest, every hockey player has to try to fling open a door and run through with their equipment bag. Bathrooms are filthy and disgusting with water damaged ceiling tiles and mold. Forget about soap. The seating area of the rink is freezing because of the poorly designed architecture; the cooling equipment has to work extra hard to fill up that much space. You'll be sitting on cement slabs. At many other rinks there is enclosed seating, a much better food counter, and some even have restaurants and full bars. The prices they charge for "food" here are comical. They won't even spend the money to have their sign lit at night. It's broke, and they aren't fixing it. Ever. It's embarrassing as that's the first impression they make on a new visitor. You can easily drive past it. Also the parking lot is dangerous to the suspension of any vehicle other than a full size truck or SUV. It will destroy your car. Southwest refuses to spend any money on repaving. It's also located in Crestwood, which is a cesspool. There are no places nearby where you could actually eat and feel safe. Enjoy the piss bums from the liquor store next door. It's a shame because 40 years ago it was probably a nice rink. But clearly whoever owns Southwest is more concerned with lining their pockets than pride in ownership. Filthy, dated, and uncomfortable are the three words that best describe Southwest Ice Arena.
