Yakima Canyon - So much beauty!

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages lands in Yakima Canyon and there are a number of recreation sites open for day use and overnight use for a small fee. If you are just driving through you do not need to pay a fee. I paid for the day use permit at one of the recreation sites and then used it at the other site I stopped at in the Canyon as well since the pass is good for BLM managed lands. I recently drove through the Canyon from South (near Selah) to North (near Ellensburg). The ride provides stunning views of basalt cliffs and the Yakima River all the way. A BLM sign welcoming you to the Yakima River Canyon by the Selah Cliffs Natural Area Preserve marks the beginning of the drive/ride on the South side. There are abundant roadside pull-outs where you can stop to take pictures and take in the scenery. Keep an eye out for wildlife as you adventure. I saw deer, hawks, and other various birds in this area as well as a very cool metallic lime green colored bug. I got a handful of mosquito bites, and watch out for rattlesnakes. A number of trains carrying different loads rode the railroad tracks through the canyon while I was exploring. Though not so many as to detract from the peaceful and quiet nature of the Canyon.

Why would we endure the heat, wind, no water, and sometimes site with no tree or shade? Because the canyon is gorgeous and the float is unbeatable in WA. Only go if you can get sites 1-5. The sun sets behind the hills earlier so you get some shade there. But God forbid you go on a 107F day like we did last August...after one dày of floating and sitting in our camp chairs in the river (our site had no trees and only our canopy) we gave up and drove home because the heat in the tent was unbearable. A couple years we only took one vehicle and managed to hitch hike from Big Pines back north to the vehicle to get it after floating (since the only road out goes along the river). Some years we take two vehicles, which is best. If you are up for an adventure or maybe you have an RV, you might try coming here to camp!

They've got extensive, knowledge, phenomenal angler and guided service and the most important.... They're just extremely welcoming no matter what level of angler you are. To back this review up, I recently took my relatively newish raft up to float the yak, upon getting up there i realized I had a hole in my floor and forgot my patch kit 3 hour away. After scrambling around all morning to different hardware stores trying to repair it I made one call to the evening hatch where I reached Rich (owner) and said we could come over and use his person patch kit. Showed up and Rich gave me his personal patch kit and helped me patch the hole in the floor... no charge... and he saved the day and got us on the water. Hell, he'd probably give you the shirt off his back if ya asked. Not only that he pointed out 4-5 bugs for us to throw that day and we pulled fish into the boat consistently all damn day with his fly recs. I can assure you this is your one stop shop. They will continue to receive all my business morning forward. Can't recommend em enough!

It has a lot of miles on it, and the butt of the rod had loosened over time. J Michelle, the new owner, took the time to help me adjust and secure it so I could keep using the setup I love rather than replacing it right away. Since my reel still works great, she helped me choose the right fly line and backing and got everything properly set up so I'm ready for many more seasons on the water. Her knowledge of the local area was incredibly helpful too -- she walked me through which flies are currently working best around Roslyn and for the type of fishing I like to do. J Michelle was prompt, efficient, encouraging, and genuinely enthusiastic about helping me improve my setup and my fishing experience. It's clear she cares about both the craft of fly fishing and the people who walk through the door. If you're anywhere near Roslyn and enjoy fly fishing, I highly recommend stopping by. Great service, great knowledge, and a welcoming shop that really supports anglers.

J Michelle (the owner) greeted me with a big smile and a wealth of knowledge that she freely shared. Over the many times I have spoken with her in the past year she has always worked with me to find the right solution to my needs, whether that be new equipment, a good selection of flies, or some of her rather extensive knowledge of good places to find some trout on the nearby rivers. It's a cool little shop with a whole lotta experience to share and people very willing to help. Many fly shops can be somewhat intimidating but you won't find that here. Great place - highly recommend!
