Having left London a little broken hearted, forced to kiss goodbye the lovely sewing cafe at the end of my street... my eyes were dried the minute I realised Glasgow had the ultimate trump card: A SEWING PUB! The Hillhead Bookclub is such a fabulous venue and it's a great space for this friendly little group. Tucked in an upstairs nook, the atmospheric lighting makes for weekly needle-threading hilarity! If I could sew within a 5m radius of a cracking bar every night - I'd be a very well dressed alcoholic (with really great curtains). While I'll be honest to say I had originally expected more of a fabric/pattern sewing vibe - as opposed to more crafty-esque sewing projects - it's a stroke of genius to have bright, super fun projects that can be whipped up in great company over the space of a couple of hours. All patterns and supplies are provided (I know, right?!) - absolute beginners are welcomed, you just bring along a smile and willingness to get stuck in. Iona has created something truly remarkable and I still can't quite believe Say It Ain't Sew catch-ups are absolutely free of charge... spreading magic sewing fairy dust to any who may seek it.

I was told my boots couldn't be resoled as they were a certain type of sole that 'wouldn't take a sole'?!...okay. Was a bit miffed about that (especially as I managed to get them resoled in another cobblers!) and was then told to get the soles on my shoes changed to anti-slip (there was nothing wrong with the original soles; just they weren't very grippy) would cost me just shy of £20! Ouch. Because these were some favourite shoes of mine & made of leather I figured what the hey...I'd rather pay that than not really be able to wear them come the icy/snowy weather. Still, I did think nearly £20 was a bit steep... They're only open until 5pm Mon-Sat so I had to wait until the next Saturday to collect them. Upon collecting them I thought they looked okay but on closer inspection the heels have got big staples visible in them and I thought this was strange as in the past I have never been able to see anything other than the heel itself. Also the sole they used was grooved and not smooth/flat as before but upon walking on them they still do not feel particularly non-slip. Hmph. Bit annoyed. Also they only take cash only and on that particular day I didn't have enough cash on me so had to go away & take out some. The lady serving was very pleasant but I don't think I will be back as I know of better/cheaper cobblers in the area.

Most of the clothing in here would suit older generations, with high quality V neck knits and a copious amount of lilac skirts and shirts! All were well priced and kept in really good condition - an easy outfit option for fancy parties! There was also an amiable selection of clothes for gents, including a large supply of jackets. The volunteers were hard at work keeping this place clean and orderly when I entered, and were notably in high spirits which is always nice on a rainy day! They were hard at work on an Easter display - gotta love a charity shop with seasonal themes. They had broken out the Easter bunnies from the back for this special occasion, and I must admit I did giggle when I heard one of the ladies comment on how one of the toys was "nice, but glaikit lookin'". What a greatly underappreciated Scots word, and to great comic effect - for those of you not from these parts it means you look a bit morose and downtrodden. Seeing people happy in their job is a rarity these days and it was pleasant to see these ladies getting into the Spring spirit of things.

So, if you need storage, read on. Safestore is easy to get to from the M8 and is right next to Glasgow Caledonian University - very handy for me with being at the Arc so often. I've visited 6 times now and have had reason to chat to the staff most times due to a mix up with billing and them putting an overlock on the locker. That being said, they still get 4 stars as this has now been resolved and the staff are consistently excellent to deal with. For example, I visited at 6pm and didn't realise that at this time the building is technically closed, although you can get in if you have 24 hour access. My key fob wasn't working so I was about to give up, but thankfully someone appeared out of the dark (in a non-creepy way), popped back inside, fired up the computer and fixed up my access. I really appreciated it as it meant I could actually get into the locker and pick up the gloves for that night's event! So, all of you with toasty warm Yelp-gloved hands can help the lovely chap at Safestore! Other good things - they have a customer toilet, there is lots of parking, there are trolleys for you to cart you things to and fro so you don't need to make lots of trips, there is automatic lights on each floor so you don't have to be worried if you're afraid of the dark (like I am). It is always clean and is well maintained.

I've kind of just accepted this fact, so if something doesn't fit in the dressing room but would look the part with just a few adjustments then I usually just go for it. Suffice to say, I've taken more than a few trips to Clark's and I have never been disappointed by their work. The staff are always really helpful and chatty and the little shop is always rather bustling and it's good to see that they're so popular. Seeing as it can be quite busy you may need to wait a couple of days for your garment to be adjusted but if you need it in an emergency you can usually negotiate something with the friendly staff. I got a dress for a dance sized here once but when I went to collect it it was still ever so slightly too big, seeing as it was strapless I didn't want to take a chance and it was absolutely no problem for them to adjust it again, thanks Clark's!

I had to get straps made for for my dress and one was at least half and inch out and sat off my shoulder!! The dress required some folds to be stitched and she had made it so obvious that they were done that I had to undo them myself and a family member sorted them instead. Overall the experience was horrible and I would definitely not recommend this alterations place. It's pricey and there are other places out there that can give a better experience and outcome. We had some A0 posters that we wanted to have laminated in time for the exhibition. My task was to find somewhere that could do it for us quickly and cheaply. Now, I didn't know this before - but apparently it's very hard to get A0 sized paper laminated. I called about 5 places and was told by all of them that the machines they used to laminate wasn't big enough to accommodate A0. My search continued. Then I called Servicepoint. Located on Sauchiehall Street, just by the Kelvingrove exit of the M8 - they're open from 7am until 11pm. Not only were they able to laminate my A0 posters (they use a special machine apparently) it also cost me only £11 per poster. And do you want to know the best bit? Because they're open from 7am till 11pm; I dropped the poster off at about 5.30pm on my way home from work, and then picked them up at 9am the next morning - no waiting time at all involved. Servicepoint also offer all types of printing, copying, finishing services, photo enlargements and design exhibition stands. In other words, anything you could ever want from a copy and print shop.
