If they receive a referral with an insurance that they do not take they will not call you to inform you as a curtest. And if you call them concerning your referral they won't have any information if they don't take your insurance. For the simple fact that all traces of that referral isn't saved. Bottom line, have all of your health insurance information in hand to see if you can make an appointment regardless weather they received a referral or not. Simply don't bother asking about your referral nor take their word that they'll call you once they receive your referral. Because that call will never happen if they don't take your insurance. One word: unethical. In a post-pandemic world, this really surprises me. I never write reviews, but I feel this has to be said and potential patients need to know. I have seen Dr. Timothy Shea as a cash-pay patient since January of this year. I realize that Dr. Shea is not able to provide a discounted rate because he accepts insurance types of all kinds and it would be unethical to provide care at varying costs. I have had 7 visits with Dr. Shea with short-term benefits, thus prompting Dr. Shea to order an MRI for my foot. Upon returning the MRI disc to Dr. Shea's office, I was told that I would need to schedule a follow up appt to discuss the findings. I asked that since no clinical care would be provided that day and since only discussion of test results were to take place if I could opt for a telephone appointment instead of an in-person appointment, with the goal of saving all parties their time, energy, appt availability for other patients and financial cost on my part. I was firmly told that Dr. Shea did not offer such telephone or virtual appointments and that I would need to come and pay cash for my visit. When I pressed into why I would need to pay the full rate for the follow up visit considering that the treatment was not going to include any modalities, gait analysis, or treatment of any kind, I was informed that there was a base rate for every visit, despite the limited service that I was to expect, and that with additional treatment interventions the cost would go upward. I further asked why a conversation about test results warranted an in-person visit, particularly in a post-pandemic world where most every other medical office has opted for telephone and virtual visits when possible and I was told that Dr. Shea only operates one way and that I would need to come in. I feel the treatment of asking for the payment similar to prior appointments when the services rendered did not warrant the full scope of follow up care previously delivered is unethical. I also feel that withholding test results from a patient until they pay for an in-person appt is also unethical. Beware potential patients. Great Doctor-Fantastic! I enjoyed his style and his staff. Very smart, funny and informative. But billing, not so good. I saw them in November, then January and then March 5th. I received a bill in April that I was 90 days past due and that there was $29.00 rebilling fee on a $8.58 balance. If they were so hard up for money, why not ask me for a payment in January, or March? I just tried to schedule an appointment with the doctor, per a referral from my primary care physician. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of telling their office staff that the nonprofit I work for is changing insurance plans from one PPO provider to another PPO provider at the start of the new year. Because I didn't have my new insurance cards/numbers, they refused to SCHEDULE the appointment. I even asked the manager. Nope - it's against their policy to schedule an appointment unless you have the next year's insurance information. What horrible business practices. I'll be asking my doctor for another referral and find an office with dramatically improved customer service and office policies. read more

I was very pleased with my visit to Dr.​ Shea. The staff took time to explain tests and ask questions. I wasn't sure what to expect as I have had foot issues for a long time. I am surprised that Dr. Shea has such a low rating here. He and Amy have always been very friendly, professional, and gone out of their way to help me in multiple instances. Let me start off by saying DR Shea is an excellent DR. He was so informative and confident doing all three of my surgery's. However his staff is some of the rudest people i have ever met. They have no care for anyone but themselves. They mess up on billing and blame the patient. Saying i am responsible for paying something that is covered by my insurance!!! They then tell me to drop off my insurance card (something they already have) and don't bother to tell me they are closed for an hour and a half for lunch!!! So here i am knocking on the door while they ignore me and my crying baby! (I thought this was gonna be a quick thing) DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED WITH SOME RESPECT!! Dr. Shea is amazing; however, I'm shocked at how the office runs, especially being a business owner myself. Today, I called to get in to see Dr. Shea for a new issue with my foot that he had fixed a few years ago. In the past, I had an appointment and small billing issue, which were on my end and since have been resolved. But when I called to have a conversation with the person that runs the front desk, I couldn't believe how disrespectful I was treated. Most of the staff are great, but if you read some of the other reviews, I'm guessing it's based on this one individual. I'm not one to write reviews, but today caught me by complete surprise. This person could have handled herself differently and we could have had a civil conversation but her attitude is unacceptable. Dr. Shea was the last one to do surgery on my foot and would have been nice to address the problem with him, and if Dr. Shea would like to discuss the issue I'm having, I'd be willing to take down my review and move forward. I've worked hard in my life and would never treat any client this way, over something so minuscule. Beware of Dr. Shea! He misdiagnosed my foot issue and he performed an unnecessary painful injection. This has caused me months of pain and I'm otherwise a healthy person. Other physicians confirmed that the injection was unnecessary. When I returned to his office in pain, he became defensive and his office staff was hostile and they treated me poorly. My visit with Dr. Shea was a pleasant experience! He was extremely knowledgeable and thorough. I came in after dealing with years of painful plantar fasciitis and he was able to quickly deduce a treatment plan. I appreciated how he patiently explained the issues he saw with my feet by examining them along with my X-rays. Nowadays its hard to find a doctor who takes his/her time to work with the patient. Terrible experience. Dr. Shea kept asking me to bring my son in every month just to clip his toenails back, something I could have done at home. We were being charged for every appointment. My sons nails we detached from the nail bed and causing him a lot of pain. I was looking for a more permanent solution and never got it at this office. I went to my orthopedic surgeon first for a foot problem. I could not figure out what was wrong with my foot nor could the orthopedic surgeon after an MRI and an x-ray. I went to Dr. Shea for a second opinion and after a thorough foot exam, he immediately diagnosed me with cuboid syndrome and started to work on it right away. I am so thrilled to have an answer and to get out of my boot!!! I did have to wait a little while to see him but it was totally worth it because he is so knowledgeable. read more

I'm a current 4th year medical student and had the opportunity to work with Dr. Shea for a month in his office. I've worked with various physicians over the past two years and it's difficult to find someone that cares about his patients and their well being more than Dr. Shea. He is very knowledgeable, and always finds the time to answer a patient's questions and concerns. As we interacted with other doctors at John Muir Medical Center, it became clear that he is a well respected physician and surgeon. He frequently visits patients after hours to ensure they receive the best quality care. I would highly recommend him for any foot or ankle problems. He is especially skilled in the wound care arena and spends time each week at the John Muir Wound Care Clinic in Walnut Creek. The clinical staff in Concord does a great job at keeping the office running smoothly and are particularly good at answering patient's billing and insurance questions. They were great at ironing out any paperwork issues I ran into as a visiting student. It is one of the best run offices I have encountered. read more

I saw Dr. Shea for two 42-year-old feet that were no longer maintaining their high arch when under the impact that a particular sport created. Dr. Shea's demeanor and explanations of the problem were very positive and thorough, and his recommendations (steroid shot into the joints, physical therapy, wrapping, and -- especially -- custom orthotics) have relieved my feet of the pain, and allowed for their recovery and for the resumption of stressful exercise. The custom orthotic has -- knock on wood -- appeared to have alleviated my knee pain, as well, as proper form is now being maintained. read more

This was my first time seeing a podiatrist and I was a little scared about the procedure but this doctor was fantastic! He was fast, explained everything well and seemed genuinely interested in talking and hearing what I had to say and my concerns. The RN that took my appt the same day was very nice and even remembered taking my call that morning. She was also very knowledgable about my issue with my feet. I wrote a review that somehow didn't make it to this page, so I am trying again. I have not had the same experience as the other writers of reviews. It is important to have a good office staff, but I did not find this staff any more or less different than others I have visited recently. The main thing is the DOCTOR and what service you receive from him/her. I found Dr. Shea to be informative, caring and every bit the professional that I expected when recommended by a friend who had him as her surgeon. He spent quality time and answered all of the questions I had to my satisfaction. He is the first doctor who immediately didn't want to do surgery for my problem. This was quite refreshing. He listened to my concerns, recommended an MRI, followed that up with a visit where he showed me results from the film, talked about strategies, and we mutually agreed on a plan of action. Dr. Shea is an amazingly skilled doctor. He was able to give my daughter shots and fix an ingrown toenail without pain. He reconstructed a shattered bone in my foot. His nurses or assistants are great. The office is nice and we have not had any problems. Parking is easy and it is great that they can do xrays right in the office. read more

If I could give them NO stars I would!! This is the WORST dr office I have ever been to. I can get past how old the office is. I can't get past the terrible staff!! When you walk in, you are required to sign in on a sheet that is left out for anyone to see. That is a HIPAA violation. At the end of my appointment, I was told to call them when I made my MRI appointment so we could schedule my follow up. I do as instructed and the curt woman on the phone snaps at me, "No! That isn't how we do it." I explained again what I had been instructed to do and she refused to book my appointment for me. I had to wait and call DAYS later which caused my appointment to be pushed out way further then it should be. This morning I called the office at 9:30a. The open at 9a. Goes to voicemail. I talk to the answering service who says they will be back in 15 min. I call back in 15 min and get the same voicemail. I keep calling back until 10a and NEVER got anyone on the phone. How can you run a productive office when no one is there to answer the phones?? DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT THIS OFFICE!!!!! read more

After bieng seen by numerous other podiatrists in Central Contra Costa County, I was fortunate to finally secure an apointment with Dr Shea. In 2003 upon my initial visit, he recognized how serious my condition was and immediatedly placed me in the emergency room to stabilize my infections and later did surgery on both feet. From that inital foot-saving intervention and through the years to the present, he has been a trusted expert and advocate, I beleive that Dr Shea has no peers in the fields of the diabetic foot, infection control, orthotics and surgical skills. I consider him the best podiatrist in the John Muir system and anyone with challenging foot conditions like mine should be seeking him out for his expertise. I have been going to Dr. Shea for over 5 years. He is an amazing doctor and up to date on all of the latest research. He is caring and will spend time with you if needed. Because of this, there is sometimes a wait in the waiting room to actually see him so plan accordingly. When you do see him, he won't be rushing off. The wait is worth it! (Wait times have been between 10min - 30 min depending on the time of day and the day of the week). I know the staff member who the other reviewers were unhappy with and she was short with people sometimes. She no longer works at Dr. Shea's office so don't let those old reviews deter you. Before I found Dr. Shea I went to 6 other podiatrists in the area and he is by far the best as far as knowledge and options. In addition to keeping up on the research, he also studied plastic surgery techniques so your scars will be minimal should you need surgery. He presented me with lots of other options, which we tried for a while but eventually I had to have surgery for a neuroma in my foot.
