A Retail Experience Worth Writing Home About (Especially Thanks to Ali!)…read more Every time I visit Portland, I make it a point to wander through the charming streets of the Northwest District, and no trip feels complete without a stop at Betsy & Iya, the boutique gem tucked next to Lei Brilla Coffee and just around the corner from the apartment I rent during my stays. It's more than just a boutique; It truly is a haven of design, warmth, and thoughtful curation. What truly elevates the experience, however, is Ali, the Store Manager and absolute heart of the space. As someone with over 15 years in retail management myself, I hold high expectations when it comes to customer experience, ambiance, and the quality of service and Ali certainly exceeds every single one of them. From our in-store conversation to her warm, personal email follow-ups, she has gone above and beyond--not just in product knowledge and service, but in genuine human connection. Ali even took the time to send me a direct vendor link when the shop didn't carry my size. Who does that anymore? Essentially, Ali seals the deal: her authenticity, enthusiasm, and eye for styling reflect the values of a brand that truly gets it. She's one of those rare retail professionals you never forget: sharp, kind, and full of local insight. Her outreach made me feel more like a friend than a customer, and that's something algorithms and online carts simply can't replicate. Whether you're a Portland local or a visitor falling for the city like I did, don't miss out on Betsy & Iya. It's a boutique that perfectly captures the spirit of Portland: creative, inclusive, and deeply personal. If you're lucky enough to chat with Ali while you're there, I guarantee the experience will linger long after your purchase. I can't wait to visit again! See you soon Ali and Team! Five stars aren't enough. --Edwin M.

Although these high quality items can be pricey, there is a nice selection of them so that you can choose based on what you'd like to spend. Their selection also expands across age ranges, with charming toy blocks to elegant glassware I really enjoyed browsing through the store, it felt like a highly curated selection of items that had both function and amazing design. Best of both worlds, I think. Canoe might've one of my favorite places discovered during this Portland trip!

I have never seen anything like it and genuinely, if your are like me and like to keep a pear, a few apples and an orange on hand but want them to last - this is not only amazing looking but perfect!! I did purchase a few smaller items. The first was a felt coaster which is so perfect! They have an array of different colors - my choice was a gorgeous burgundy and I loved being able to buy just one. I have coasters for guests which is a whole set but for my daily iced drink covered in condensation, this is so perfect. The card says they are made in Germany by a company called Parkhaus and how to care for and clean the coaster. The other item was a greeting card which I intend to frame. Vancouver Washington artist Claudia Moore makes the cards with foraged leaves and seeds. This is a great spot if you are looking for something unique as a gift or for your home. They also have some very nice cleaning solutions and bath products. There is a well thought, small selection of purses and bags.

They also sell accessories like affordable jewelry from local artisans, unique scarves, shoes/boots/sandals and even an assortment of wonderful hand reams and candles that smell so good! The other day I had to buy a pitchuli scented candle because it reminded me of my youth! Like any store, some of the clothing works for me and some doesn't. We all have to know our own bodies and what fits best. What I like about adorn most is that they have a variety of styles because they know women's bodies come in a variety of shapes! I try to stop in several times a year to see what's new, when I need a special outfit or a gift for a friend. This week I bought a pair of Mia slides that are waterproof, perfect for after my swims, and they have a Birkenstock footbed making them super comfortable with support for my feet. Love them! Just $30 and in a very on trend rose gold color with white buckles. Wore them to the pool the next day and a little girl complimented me! Too cute. My only complaint is that the store is so packed with items that when trying on shoes, there was nowhere to put the boxes while trying them on in front of the mirror. A sales clerk ended up vclearing off a stool so I could place my potential shoes there as I tried on different sizes and styles. They have several locations (downtown, SE Clinton) and it's worth visiting them all!

The prices are in the high side, especially for Portland, but a cashmere cardigan for $400 is the going rate. The boutique is bright, clean and has an industrial vibe. It's easy to browse through the racks of clothing which line the parameter on racks in a color coordinated fashion. The cashmere dresses are scrumptious! Beautiful in color, texture and style; refined elegance, classic, timeless. Even cashmere loungewear, perfect for staying comfy and warm during these long days spent at home. Kayla, the young woman working that day, was super helpful and pleasant. She easily engages in conversation and provides assistance, if that is your mode of shopping. And also gives one the freedom to browse at their leisure with no pressure to purchase, which is my preference. We visited on MLK Day and were there specifically to see what Oliveve handbags were available since I had recently come across this brand while shopping at the House of Lolo in Palm Desert. Kayla immediately recognized my Jasper bag! The Oliveve bags have a modern design, clean lines, and my bag is made of neutral colored pebbled leather. It's the perfect bag to use while shopping as it is a cross body style yet as large as a tote and holds a lot. That day there was only one Olivevebag available, a black handbag with tan wrapped handles, and my friend immediately claimed it! I'll have to go online (Oliveve.com) to buy my next one, the black oiled Italian leather Eva bag, which I've had my eye on for a few months. In addition to the clothing, they have a small selection of unique jewelry and other accessories like boots, tassels to add to your handbags, hats, belts and scarves. Even a small but unique selection of home decor items like textured throws, pillows, candles, woven baskets and trays, perfume and vases.p to adorn your home. Located on NW 11th in The Pearl District, it's around the corner from the main shopping area so unless you know it's there, you may not stumble upon it. It's worth seeking out if you want to add quality clothing to your wardrobe that you can wear season after season. And while you are there, definitely check out the jewelry, boots and the Oliveve handbags!

Maybe I am just not hip with the times and people really do spend that kind of money on a random coat, if so, I beg your pardon. It would be cool if your shop had goods that "normal" people like me, I know I am throwing the term normal around quite loosely but folks probably get my gist. My budget for a really nice and very unique coat is more like $500.00 Unless you are selling Versace or something, consider rethinking your price points. There used to be several Muji locations in California, but they all closed due to the downturn in business from COVID and expensive leases. I visited this Muji store 4 times in as many days, wandering through to admire all the beautifully made and practical household goods and also trying to figure out what I could fit in my carry-on suitcase for my return trip. This store is huge, but nicely laid out. The sections are clearly marked from travel goods to clothing to personal care to household items to furniture to stationary. And there are plenty of staff milling about, restocking and folding, who can help you if you are looking for a particular item. The store wasn't very busy on weekday afternoons and evenings, but I noticed that it got a lot of foot traffic on Saturday. And on the hot weekend that I was in Portland, it was also very nice to step inside the air conditioned environs for a rest. They were also handing out samples of some of the snacks! Prices are reasonable for the quality of the products. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland!

I will say the store layout was a bit interesting, with some areas that felt more cramped. It was fairly crowded when we went, so I did have to squeeze by people to make my way through the store. I spent some time browsing the clothing section and found several items that caught my eye. The clearance section was a bit disorganized and the sizes were not labeled clearly unfortunately. Customer service at Muji was friendly and adequate. The staff working in the fitting room area were especially helpful. It would've been great to have more fitting rooms available, as the line moved slowly and took up a good chunk of time. You are also limited to bringing in 5 items at a time but you can swap out items as needed. I ended up purchasing multiple tops and a few pants for everyday wear. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to browse the homewares section but was pretty satisfied with my clothing purchases and shopping experience. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
