I love affordable bowling in Chicago. I came here with a group of friends for a birthday party on a Sunday afternoon. Keeping track of scores by hand is tough, but we had great score-keepers! The lanes are nice and casual. The beer prices are pretty good. It's also a very short walk from the Brown line, so it is a good wintertime activity destination. read more

When it comes to bowling, this is it. Real wood lanes. Hand scoring only. Super friendly staff and ownership. Cheap prices, for bowling and beer. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a perfect score is they don't serve food (minor in my estimation as there a ton of places around that you can get food, or have delivery sent there), but does take away from a truely perfect score. Divey bowling at its finest. No robots to take your score, you have to manage yourself - though under the influence of their stiff pours at the bar, easier said than done. The ball selection is random, the shoes are ugly, the drinks are limited, and the fun is off the charts. constant references to the big lebowski had already put me in a pretty happy mood, even though i am a TERRIBLE bowler. really awful. skill level doesn't matter though, as timberlanes provides enough material to entertain and delight with the ambiance, service, and clientele alone! the fluorescent lighting makes everyone glow, making a visor or tinted glasses suddenly appealing. the borrowed shoes compliment any outfit. and the staff seems like a family with everyone pitching in to keep the place rolling. so to speak. this place is seriously old school. a little dingy. a little past it's prime. but it's friendly and fun. and it's the perfect place to reenact john goodman's tirade from the lebowski, so how can you beat that! let's roll! read more

We had my dad's 60th b-day party at this place and the owners really came through. We had six lanes ot ourselves and room to set up food. Everyone had a great time. The atmosphere is exactly what you want from an old-time bowling alley. Better brush up on your bowling scoring before you go though, cause it's do it yourself. This is the best place for bowling! It's really chill. Sure it's small but it's very nice. You get to keep your own score, they have a room where you can choose your ball. All of them different weight :). The employees or owners were super nice and friendly. Me and bf had so much fun. this is a collaborative review from me & DJ - being that I live next door, I might be a little biased - every night we get to hear the gentle crashing of pins,its kinda like the ocean a little bit. but not. The owners are super nice & the bowling alley is smoke free as previously noted. Beers cheap, people are great- especially when you order food in and hang out at the bar. Great prices for a bowling alley in Chicago. I think they only have 9 lanes, so it can probably get busy, but both times I have visited, I have been able to get a lane immediately. They have a special going Sunday - Thursday for $2 games after 10 pm. The jukebox was playing some good stuff, but I didn't get a chance to take a look at what it had to offer. Excellent bowling environment. My shoes seemed to be on the brand new side too, which was nice. My only complaint was that I couldn't find any bowling balls under 12 lbs. I don't know if they don't exist there, or the group of bowlers beside us were hoarding the few that they had. I will definitely be back for more fun! read more

Cash-only bar and bowling alley that seemed very couples-friendly. Like, everyone in the place was with someone. Nice. I dig seeing well-adjusted people having fun because my own friends are such miscreants and hobos. For example, when I walked in last night, Reilly and his photographer pal Mike were sitting at the bar, looking all dejected and bloated on canned beer. Great. The mighty Timberlanes is packed with happy weekend revelers and I'm stuck with the guys who look (and act) like recently paroled sex offenders. After I drank my own can of Hamms I stared solemnly at a group of a dozen or so nice young people who were bowling and laughing it up. I wanted to join them, but I felt tainted by my associates, darkened, and dare I say, a few notches lower on the totem pole of humanity. So I left. Just got back from a really fun night at Timberlanes. We went as part for a friend's fundraiser for his improv group. Apparently, it's pretty affordable to rent out after 9pm on a Saturday night with drink tokens included? The bowling was really fun, even if I did really poorly. Drinks were cheap (before we got a couple drink tokens). I got a jack & ginger and Z got a really tall Hacker Schorr and it was $10.50. Will definitely be heading back here. ;) read more

Called ahead on a Friday afternoon to ask if there was open bowling, and by the time we got in, they had already set up a ramp and bumpers for us (they knew we were bringing kiddos). If you want a fun place to bowl, this place is pretty good. Right next to the brown line, so its real easy to get to. It was a Saturday night and my friends and I wanted to go bowling and we called at least 5 different places, and Timberlanes was the only place that took reservations...and our reservation was way past midnight..and it was still uber-packed when we got there. shoes were three bucks, it was 20 bucks for a full hour per lane..we actually played for an hour and a half and still paid only 20 so that was nice of them..especially after what happened... I was already drinking a little, and i got a pitcher of miller for 11 bucks. not bad. I still had a little of my own stuff leftover so I decided to pour it in my cup and this lady comes out of nowhere and snatched my drink and bottle away ! I felt really bad and apologized and the owner was all like "you can't do that blah blah blah", but one of the guys was really cool though and was joking around asking me what was in my bottle because they were trying to figure out what was in it all night. (it was captain morgan btw) So yeah, that was my first experience. It was pretty good regardless of the little mishap, which was my bad anyways. Cheap beer, fun time, oh yeah and manual scoring !! This place has the original wood lanes and the mechanics of the pin setting is very efficient. Last night called for a party of 4 and reserved a lane for 2 hours for $40 dollars. The man just ask me for my name and phone number and when I got there the lanes were reserved for us. We bowled for 3 hours and paid $60. It is well worth the price if you bowl with a group of people we bowled 16 games in 3 hours. read more

Definitely not a place for people that love the new high tech bowling places. This place is so old school that you even have to write your score down on paper, the shoes are really comfortable but probably out of the 80's! There is a jukebox that offers great music. Carefully though, they don't offer any kind of food services but they do allow to order from outside. All in all ,every time i went to Timber Lanes i had a great experience! What a great place! We reserved a few lanes yesterday afternoon for an adult bday party. Staff was amazing! Very helpful courteous and fun. Old school with awesome booze prices. You have to score yourself but it's good to practice your math skills. Great venue for both adults and kids to just have fun. The owners were very friendly, and were genuinely appreciative of our business. They were very accommodating to our demanding 6 year old by helping set up bumpers during our lane time, providing assistance with the video games, etc. also for the adults... very reasonably priced lane and shoe fees, and great alcohol selection (very excited to have Half Acre on tap). This is just a small dive bowling alley, really nice vibe. I liked the picture of the Jesus from The Big Lebowski on the wall. Great tunes on the Juke Box, we were having trouble with the manual scoring because I haven't gone bowling in a long time. The extremely friendly staff scored a game for us and I had a ton of fun there. I had a coupon from Entertainment.com for half-off but the guy said he never seen it before and couldn't take it without the manager there. The bowling was already discounted anyway since it was a Sunday night and it was extremely cheap. When a pin got stuck when the pins were resetting, the guy working there who wasn't even on his shift enthusiastically dove into the pins to reset them. Came here for an afternoon with a community group I'm a part of. Since we had a big group, we had four lanes which made things go pretty smoothly. However, it still took my team about two hours to finish one game in part because we had a big team but also because all of our balls kept getting stuck down by the pins. It took a few of us going to tell someone to get them fixed. The people working didn't seem too fast to get us bowling again. But all in all it was a fun time; nice being able to bring food in and drinks weren't too bad. However, charging $1 for such a small fountain soda was a bit of a bummer. read more

Timberlanes is a cool little place to drop in if you feel like rolling a couple games and don't care about lane condition . What's nice about this place is the old school feel. Timber is very no frills, even ignoring the automatic scoring boom. For a serious bowler, while the atmosphere might not be great, the dated pin setters can do a number on your expensive bowling balls and the lanes are kept in mediocre-at-best-shape, making it hard to actually practice. On the plus side, everyone who works here is really pleasant and the booze is cheap. I wouldn't mind going back as long as there was serious emphasis and drinking and not serious bowling. read more

This place oozes old school charm! While visiting a friend last year he asked me to sub for a league game. TL has only eight lanes, with manual scoring. Not an electronic scoring machine in sight.....in 2013!!!! Many people love to bowl, but the purist are the ones who know how to keep score manually. Big bar, well stocked with inexpensive spirits and cheap beer (Bud Light, Coors Light, and Blue Moon on draft, and bottles). Loved this place so much, I asked my friend to sub again this year! I just moved and found this place around the corner from my house....so excited about that. It is a dive and I love it for that reason. I had to ask for help about 5 times because the pins and ball kept getting stuck but its all part of the experience. The people are friendly, the beer is cold. They even had clean socks for me to wear (I didn't plan on bowling- I was just walking by). I am not giving it fives stars because they are a little low on 8 and 10lb balls and that is all I can handle. read more

This place was good. Reminds me of college because it has the old creeky warped lanes and having to keep your own score. Fun times with friends but probably not good for serous bowlers.
