The service is excellent. The place has recently had an refurbishment though don't expect a Waldorf tea room ambiance.

Strangely, there seems to be a distinct lack of quality Chinese restaurants in Glasgow, either that…read moreor I've had my head buried under the sand for the past 10 years or so that I've lived in the city. When Ka Ka Lok appeared next to long standing Chinese / Malaysian restaurant Asia Style with its bright red signage and funky Chinese style cartoon logo I thought to myself, "ooft that's brave opening up next to a Glasgow institution". But, to my delight, this place more than stood up for itself. Although the restaurant is rather big and sparse looking, it was busy and loud enough, with a regular turnover of local Chinese customers to give the place a good vibe. We were warmly greeted on arrival and taken to our table. The waitress promptly gave us two menus to look over, one an 'English' menu and the other a 'Chinese' one. The English menu contained your typical Black Bean / Sichuan / Sweet & Sour type dishes, probably curated for the westerners. Not Fish & Chips and Chicken Pies as I had originally imagined being on an 'English' menu. The Chinese menu was a Hong Kong style fare, with more traditional dishes such as Clay Pot stews, seafood/fish dishes, roasts etc. Needless to say we all ordered from the Chinese menu and the staff were ever so friendly in helping us to make our decisions. In fact the owner was key to helping us have a great meal as he picked out some great dished for us. We opted for a dozen dumplings to nibble on as an appetiser, which were delicious. Then a feast of Clay Pot dishes arrived, including aubergine and salt fish, XO Seafood, an outstanding and tender beef stew, three kind roast containing pork belly / char sui / duck, Singapore style noodles and a giant vat of rice. It has to be said the quality of the food and ingredients was second to none and the portions were hugely generous. Again the owner and his staff made us feel incredibly welcome and they kept checking up on us to make sure we were happy with the food. Although they don't have a drinks license, we were treated to endless supplies of refreshing jasmine tea. Furthermore they have a great tasting Aloe juice, which I think I may now be addicted too. To summarise Ka Ka Lok, weird name, amazing food and cheap as chips!

They do just about everything right here. For one; they focus on the food and what you as a…read morecustomer would like to eat and how you'd like to eat it. Secondly: No, actually, that is it. Alcohol license? They have a 12 seater restaurant, barely space for a cash register. So... Nah.. people will eventually complain about the coldness of their beer, or the off-ness of their wine. Nope, they'll stick with the green Jasmine / Lotus tea and to the food and concentrate on that. You bring in what you like at the temperature you'd like to drink it. Delivery? They will not have a driver on standby for you to eventually complain about the lateness and missing items. No no no. If you like the food that is cooked; you will come over and get it yourself. And trust me you will. I now understand those people that drive for miles to get their perfect hot chocolate served at some obscure farmers' coffee shack. I would be happy to order, jump on a bus and get food from here, if I feel flush I may even pay a taxi to collect and deliver... Heck, I may even visit people I know in the area a bit more to persuade them to do a takeout. You just swing by or phone up your order. They'll prepare and pack it in front to you so you'll know what you got. Ordering complicated dishes that take a long time to prepare? Sure you can, just order 24-48 hrs in advance - advice for how many people - and they'll have it ready for your the evening you visit. The lady that served us knew all about the dishes that were available, supplied recommendations and was in general very friendly, accommodating and extremely helpful. As they are popular they do turn the tables around. We had 2.5 hours on our table, which is more than ample. Be prepared to get stuck in, eat with your hands and get pretty messy with your meal... (Oh was that just me...?) But they provide napkins, wet towelettes, fingerbowls, etc... As it is such a small place I don't recommend this for families with young children. You cannot run around, highchairs, trolleys, car seats etc.. will be in the way and most possibly restrict movement of servers and guests. They have one toilet and it is down a very(!) steep flight of stairs. If you do insist I'd say book the whole restaurant. I recommend this place for couples and close group of friends around 6-8 We had a wonderful time and I'd like to thank the B&D Kitchen for having us!

It is really hard to get authentic cuisine here in Edinburgh as the Chinese population here is not as high as London. Definitely give this place a try and try what the Cantonese community has to offer. Staff are really nice and helpful as well.

The waiting area (where you're seated if you're still waiting for members of your party to arrive) was nice and comfortable, and the service was great. Really professional and prompt. As a vegetarian, I can't attest to the quality of the meat dishes, but the rest of my family (there were 11 of us there all together) seemed to love theirs. The veggie dish I got was great. I also love that you get noodles or rice with whatever you order! I ate a lot of noodles. Noodles are kind of my thing. It is a bit spendy (my sense of how spendy it is isn't very good, since I'm an American and despite knowing that it's about $1.3 to a pound, I still read "£14" and think "hey, only $14!". Obviously, that's inaccurate). Most of my family live in Glasgow and go here quite often. I'd definitely come back the next time I'm over there! Not too expensive, imo, and really good food. If you're on the fence, it's definitely worth checking out.

For years, maybe decades people have told me this is the best place for Chinese food in Glasgow. So I was excited to go for the first time and see if it really lives up to the hype. First impressions were good, very swanky although a bit to dark lighting for me. Jackets were taken from us and we were offered drinks in the waiting area. Quickly we moved to the restaurant and started to order the food. Now the prices are way way excessive in my opinion. Most main courses were around 18 quid. For that price this place was going to have to be amazing. To keep cost down we decided to share a banquet and swapped a fish fish out of it for a salt and chilli chicken one to fit the dietary requirements of the group. The food was ok but a bit to plain for me. This is definitely a British Chinese restaurant catering for western tastes. There is no good authentic dishes on offer here I am afraid. This means that although the food was fine, it seemed boring and very plain compared to the great food you can get elsewhere in the city Standout dishes for me was the crispy shredded duck wraps and......... (I'm trying to think of another standout dish)..... We had an interesting starter which was chicken of some type wrapped in lettuce leaves. Other than that the food on offer was spring rolls, ribs, etc. The clientele also seemed a bit "different" I felt like I was sitting in a Glasgow version Of the Sopranos. Everyone seemed to know everyone and have their favourite table. Reading back I'm going to take a star off. I started at three, but I'm going with two. Reason for the low score is that although the service, decor and food was all ok. It was just an ok three, but when you add in that it is crazy expensive and that there is now amazing other places to eat Chinese in Glasgow I feel that 2 star is the right grade to advise people to head to ka ka lok or Sichuan house instead.
