This sandwich blew my mind. It has climbed my mount rushmore of sandwiches. It's definitely top 5. It's very flavorful with every bite. I was full after eating one half but it was so good, i vacuumed the rest of it. Great service overall, it was right by the water. The Tripleta ranks as one of the best sandwiches in the world. I may have shortened my life span by several years, but life isn't worth living without having tasting one of these sandwiches. What is the Tripleta? It's a combination of ... get ready for this ... ham, chicken, and steak. Mix in some lettuce, tomato, and mayo, and you have the ultimate midnight sandwich. Each mouthful is simply heavenly with alternating textures and flavors. First you have the soft, salty ham. Then you chew through the tougher rib-eye steaks (similiar to Philly cheesesteaks). Finally, you hit the tender and juicy bits of chicken. The meat is shaved thinly so that it falls apart and melts in your mouth. All this could be yours ... for $5.50. Where do you find this awesome goodness? There's a nighttime street market in Old San Juan. Look for the cart near the corner of Calle Comerico and Calle de San Justo. The best way, is to memorize my photo before venturing out. And, if it's not there, just walk around and you'll find plenty to salivate over. An initial Google search of "tripleta sandwich" indicates that this is a relatively little-known Puerto Rican sandwich. There are some discussions scattered across message boards in Philadelphia and Miami. Mark my words, if the Tripleta makes it big on the Mid-Atlantic Coast, then you saw it here first. This was a pretty good tripleta for 7.50! Not my favorite tripleta I had but it wasn't bad! It's located in Old San Juan and it's usually pretty quick service too. It's very filling so I shared this one sandwich with my friend and we were both pretty full afterwards. I just wish they cut the meats smaller and toasted the bread or something. read more

Omg these sandwiches are bangin! Absolutely LOVED the mixture of flavors put into one humongous sandwich. On my cruise a few years ago I was planning on coming. Unfortunately they were closed. The tico tripleta cart is usually open later on in the day and into the night. It's popular (especially with locals), so there could be a small wait depending on how crowded it is. I was so excited that on my most recent cruise (January), the cart was open and ready for business! Located only a short distance from the cruise port, this place is so easy to find! After walking off your cruise ship and off the pier, make a left and follow the waterfront straight to the cart. Usually, other food carts/trucks and vendors set up in the area too. The prices are wonderful. These sandwiches are massive, great for sharing. The bread is so fresh, and each sandwich is made to order! So much meat!!! Seats are everywhere near the waterfront so you'll be able to enjoy your sandwich. There was a bit of a language barrier, but the owner was so nice and made a heck of a sandwich! I had this on my last night in OSJ after eating at a more high scale restaurant (smaller portioned) earlier in the evening. Walking past the barrage of food carts near La Casita ranging from tacos to ice cream, the only one with a line was Tico Tripleta. The first thing that caught my eye was the bread, it reminded me of Amaroso's Rolls, which any good Philly cheesesteak is made on. So to me, the worst case scenario was bad cheesesteak....good bread. What I got was so much more. The meat is cooked up like a cheesesteak, but a mix of beef, pork, and chicken, and on the bread is ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Thats it. Simple. What you get can't be compared to anything else, its like crossing a cheesesteak with Big Mac's special sauce...but that doesn't even do it justice. Again I cant give enough credit to the bread, hands down the best sub roll outside of Philadelphia.I've had. Do yourself a favor one night in OSJ, skip the overpriced tourist stops (which I would also highly recommend), and pick one of these up for $5.50. Maybe follow it up with a bag of churro a couple stands over for $2.50, and people watch from the plaza as you debate a second sandwich. read more

Holy crap! This is now in my top 10 of sandwiches! My boyfriend and I made a drunken stop by this food cart after an evening out in osj. I'll admit, we saw something about the tripletas on a tv show and wanted to try one. Living in Philly and based on it's appearance we expected it to taste like a cheesesteak. Well! This is no cheesesteak! Maybe it's that I'm not a native Philadelphian but this sandwich far surpassed any cheesesteak that I've ever had! Eh. With all the rave reviews I expected a lot more from this meat sandwich. It is literally just a pile of meat on a roll. It's extremely greasy and hard to eat. Took out over half the meat and it became palatable. Don't be fooled this tastes nothing like a Philly as its described. A tripleta is like a philly cheesesteak hits latin culture! It is sliced chicken, pork and steak mixed together on a flat top grill served on a nice roll with ketchup, mayo and mustard. We took our sandwhiches of only $7 back to the Ritz Carlton and ate them by the pool. They were to die for! This posting is for those not lucky to be living in San Juan. We live in Olathe Kansas and found just discovered 'Rice and Beans Cafe' in KCK. The menu has this sandwich, the Tripleta . So much meat my husband took half the sandwich home for dinner. It is worth the 30 minute drive for this sandwich. If you can find a place in your town that serves it, run don't walk! read more

I tried this after seeing the great reviews of this place and would have to go against them all. I ate her with my wife and we were both very disappointed. My wife ate about 3 bites and I only had half before we could not take the salty greasiness any longer. I have had plenty of street food, so it's not like I'm just not used to it. They basically through 3 types of meat on a griddle (ham, chicken, and steak) smear a bunch of katchup, mustard and mayo on a bun and give it to you, dripping grease everywhere. It is very salty.
