The Tripleta ranks as one of the best sandwiches in the world. I may have shortened my life span by several years, but life isn't worth living without having tasting one of these sandwiches. What is the Tripleta? It's a combination of ... get ready for this ... ham, chicken, and steak. Mix in some lettuce, tomato, and mayo, and you have the ultimate midnight sandwich. Each mouthful is simply heavenly with alternating textures and flavors. First you have the soft, salty ham. Then you chew through the tougher rib-eye steaks (similiar to Philly cheesesteaks). Finally, you hit the tender and juicy bits of chicken. The meat is shaved thinly so that it falls apart and melts in your mouth. All this could be yours ... for $5.50. Where do you find this awesome goodness? There's a nighttime street market in Old San Juan. Look for the cart near the corner of Calle Comerico and Calle de San Justo. The best way, is to memorize my photo before venturing out. And, if it's not there, just walk around and you'll find plenty to salivate over. An initial Google search of "tripleta sandwich" indicates that this is a relatively little-known Puerto Rican sandwich. There are some discussions scattered across message boards in Philadelphia and Miami. Mark my words, if the Tripleta makes it big on the Mid-Atlantic Coast, then you saw it here first. This was a pretty good tripleta for 7.50! Not my favorite tripleta I had but it wasn't bad! It's located in Old San Juan and it's usually pretty quick service too. It's very filling so I shared this one sandwich with my friend and we were both pretty full afterwards. I just wish they cut the meats smaller and toasted the bread or something.

30 minute wait for the best sandwich ever!

A cut down the middle of a tripleta may show you how my arteries look like after consuming this juicy mouth watering sandwich. But whatever. Life is short and this is definitely the best sandwich I have ever had. I won't be surprised if they start making tripleta magnets and shot glasses to sell in the souvenir shops. A must try if in Puerto Rico!

I took one bite and had a hard time deciding if I would rather finish eating my tripleta or make love to it.

Huge size. A lot of meat. A LOT! Fatty and greasy, very satisfying after a long day at the beach.

I had this on my last night in OSJ after eating at a more high scale restaurant (smaller portioned) earlier in the evening.

Food trucks all over San Juan and Chicago's got, like, three. Get it together, Windy City!! Rather…read morethan getting sucked into a tourist trap of a restaurant in OSJ, I knew that my expanding belly yearned for some local goodness that would satisfy my food jones and treat my wallet right. Enter the Mystic Caribbean Food Truck. Now, like I said, there are food trucks all over San Juan and, especially, by La Casita. Which one to choose? I finally understood Rebecca Black's conundrum over which seat to take. Thankfully, I was in the good hands of a local who likes to eat (said with love, NC). He led me to MC and all was good. I mean, really good. I ordered a ham, egg & cheese sandwich with mustard, lettuce, tomato, and onion. Add one 7-Up to the mix and I was out $3.75. Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth? $3.75! And this was no Ally McBeal waifwich. No. This sandwich was huge. I am blessed (!) to have big hands and this bad boy dwarfed my massive (!) mitts. The bread was soft and chewy and perfectly held up to the sandwiches' hearty ingredients. Speaking of, the ham was thinly-sliced but piled on thick. The eggS were fried to proper firmness with just the right bit of runny yolk to give the sandwich some juice. The were also atop the cheese which is the progression that makes most sense to me (meat then cheese then egg). The veggies were crisp and cold and the mustard was lightly spread on the top slice of bread to give some flavor but not to overwhelm the sandwich. Eating good, cheap food by the water on a perfect 82 degree day just might be the definition of happiness. It's way better than finding a nickel.
