Wow what a burger! Somehow T-bird has Burger Magic because my Beyond Burger with shredded lettuce, pickles and Special Sauce tasted like the cow burgers I ate growing up. That was crazy! Fries were perfect, vegan poutine was a true delight with smoky gravy and faux melted cheeezze - up there with Paradox Cafe's shoestring fries poutine. House margarita was perfectly tart. The interior is cozy and the floor to ceiling windows facing Foster are my favorite. The BBQ bowl, one of their vegan options, was pretty good, but could benefit from a sauce or more seasoning. I am hoping that with time, and ironing out the logistics between TB and Foster Burger - where the food comes from - the food menu will expand (especially more vegan options). We went at around 7:30/8 and one of the two people on staff was training so the service was mostly iffy at first, but our drinks were good and I still felt "waited" on. We went about a week ago, and they were having card machine issues and we were double charged...so maybe bring cash if you want one more than one drink. The music was good also. Thunderbird was a spot suggested by a friend. After looking at their Instagram I was excited for their frozen cocktails and specials! Unfortunately, when I arrived the bartender mentioned they never have happy hour, which I guess is true if your specials are sporadic. Needless to say there wasn't anything going on when I visited. I went with a pony to start because I love how small and adorable they are and followed up with a froze. My froze was tart - a little too much honestly. The rest of my group ordered the impala which is an impressive and tasty cocktail served in a large (32oz) mason jar! After trying theirs I wish I'd gone with one of these, but luckily it was big enough to share with my fiancé. We ordered some food, I got the sliders which were seemingly regular burgers on the slightly smaller end. My fiancé and I could have easily shared these, but assuming all sliders are small he ordered his own dish. I've ordered at least twice from this restaurant. Tonight I had their spicy cheeseburger (not by that name). It was delicious, well seasoned and the meat was perfect for my taste. The accompanying fries would have been better if they hadn't been steamed by the packaging. I know that's hard to avoid with delivery. I could tell that they would have been good otherwise. Cool, comfortable place. The staff are people you might get to know and like over time. On my last visit they were having a fundraiser for a local school. It seems at least one of the owners lives in the neighborhood and his kids attend there. Great burgers and fries and my daughter loved their vegetarian options. Great selection of beers. They have some screens if that is what you want, but this is not a sports bar. They do it all well, but I would go back for drinks here because of the vibe, the food, and the people on staff... it feels like the perfect neighborhood spot, that just might become "my" spot. read more

I've been supporting Thunderbird since they opened and have always dismissed their poor customer service since I was mainly here for the vegan menu. After my most recent experience here, I will definitely not be returning. Due to covid, many bars and restaurants in Portland have extended their outdoor patio seating to the public sidewalks. Not surprisingly, this leads to more encounters with people that are experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health crises, etc. The way that Thunderbird employees handled a recent situation with a homeless man this past weekend was atrocious. I'd much rather spend my time and money at an establishment that treats people (customers or not) in a humane and respectful manner. read more

Epic cake slices too, I believe ours was some peanut butter bacon (vegan) concoction that was out of this world. They share a space with foster burger but have their own seating, really nice artwork and low low lights. This is the top best bar in FOPO. they have slushees year round, amazing cocktails- like really good and not expensive, VEGAN food & meat too, heated patio, they love dogs, the inside is super cute and they host artist work to buy, and they have rotating vegan cake flavors. Disappointed in our first visit to the THUNDERBIRD. We were the only patrons inside when we arrived. Ordered the onion rings, coconut creme lime cake, Old Reliable and Willamette Valley Veggie burgers, and a beer. Old Reliable was perfectly delicious, but everything else fell short. The large order of onion rings were way overcooked, beyond crispy, and flavorless as a result. Left half behind. The cake was old and nearly flavorless. Didn't finish the cake either. While we were there a new cake replaced the one I had been served. Then I wondered how old was the one I had been served? The Willamette burger, a Portobello burger, which had beets and squash on it also, was edible but oddly flavored. It ended up being the beets which kind of ruined it. The beets were highly pickled and overpowered the rest of the burger. Strong sour vinegar flavor that absorbed the other flavors. We had to ask the staff for napkins and at no point were we asked how our food was...the bar was still empty mostly empty. The onions rings mentioned earlier were obviously dark brown and I wish I would have said something when they first were brought out, so that's on me. But I was hopeful they would still taste fine. But nope. Anyway, after so much good food and service at other Lightning Bar establishments, this felt like a why bother. read more

I've been a fan of Foster Burger but since their buns aren't vegan I don't go there very often (wrapping your burger in lettuce is as sad it gets for vegans). Thunderbird served up some juicy charbroiled veggie burgers and they did not disappoint. I didn't get a chance to try their cocktails but the atmosphere was chill and the servers friendly. My time here was a little bit of a rollercoaster but like a really fun and scary one. I loved it, I was upset & hangry, and then I loved it again. Let's just say they made a mistake but rectified it and all was right in the world again. The atmosphere is exactly my style. The mostly (v) menu makes it easy for my partner and I to choose entree options. And the food? Well... the food was so good I felt a little emotional. Best veggie burger I've ever had. Best onions rings I've ever had. I had two boilermakers and an Underberg to finish the night off. I was in hog heaven. Haven't felt that content for a very long time. Well done T-bird. read more

Thunderbird has the best poutine in Portland!!! Cocktails are solid. Food is delicious. Staff are amazingly friendly, and have also become pros at dealing with sometimes not so nice vagrants (it's Portland). I didn't feel unsafe eating on their outdoor patio over the winter months. read more

Yay for a sexy, vegan, urban bar!! I took my mom here on a Sunday night and it was great! Great food, I love the Steigl grapefruit beer and the portobello mushroom burger, and the smokehouse burger (for our non-vegan associate). The atmosphere is sexy, the lighting is dark and moody, it's all good. The only challenge is that you've got to walk through the front door of Foster Burger to get to this restaurant. So that's a bit confusing. But only on the first arrival. 5 stars for sure. read more

We order Thunderbird easily once a week. The food is incredible and the staff is even more phenomenal. Our household has both vegan and meat eaters so it's nice to find a spot that has delicious options for both parties. It's not like your typical restaurant thats serves meat and has bullshit vegan options. Outside the ridiculously good food, they have a staff that truly cares for their customers. Thunderbird accidentally sent two meat burgers with our food delivery driver when one was supposed to be vegan. They contacted us by phone immediately and not only gave a heartfelt apology, but they had their own employee hand deliver the right food. Amazing right? They even threw in free cake and cookies to make it up. If that's not going above and and beyond, I don't know what is. Thank you to everyone at Thunderbird for not only making the best burgers (try the Burner, you wont be disappointed), but for being top notch when it comes to customer service. read more

I REALLY love the ambiance of this place. Laid back, great music, nice bar, and good beer selections, and friendly staff. (Order at the bar, btw.) However, I'm a little underwhelmed by the food. I guess I was expecting something a little different, but essentially it's Foster Burger. To be fair, I had the Thunder burger, which I asked about and knew was FB's veggie burger with different sauce. FB's fries and onion rings. The Vegan BBQ bowl was spicy, and tasty, with a vinegar based slaw, and fresh jalapeños. Hot! They are new, with a small menu, but we were told they'd be adding new things in the coming months. So yummy! We hit up happy hour which was super lucky because $1 fries. Are you kidding me? With awesome vegan sauce! We also got a slice of vegan chocolate cake which was soooo good.
