Hope that helps as Google Maps was marginally helpful. Starts out as a short trek thru a wash-like area between homes. After that as you ascend you get right into a nice moderately challenging varying elevation hike around the mountains. The views are very nice throughout your hike. It looks well traveled but I saw very few people. The folks who live in the neighborhood have it made with such a nice trail so convenient for them. It is most definitely a suburban trail, but clearly an oasis for hikers who live in the area. I am definitely going to be back any time I want a great hike, but do not want to head up to the mountains.

Of course, in our arid region this could only mean a riparian area (interface between land and a stream). A lush riparian plant community used to thrive along the Rio Salado (Salt River) until the building of dams and even a dump site changed much of that. But five miles of the Rio Salado just south of downtown Phoenix was set aside by the City of Phoenix for the restoration of the riparian community, and the ongoing success of the project is visible to anyone driving along Central Avenue as it crosses the Rio Salado (see the pics). You can hike, bike, or jog through the Habitat Restoration Area's trails, which are also wheelchair-accessible. It is a great place for viewing wildlife, including more than 200 bird species that have found the area to be a suitable habitat. Bring your binoculars - it'll make your visit even more enjoyable! Walking tours, nature festivals, and other programs and activities are offered by park rangers, staff, and volunteers. The area is a work in progress, and there's more to be done. But do come and enjoy this lush oasis ... or rather, riparian area. It's free, and it's a good opportunity to experience the varied wildlife of the Salt River as it once was and is now becoming again.

Great views at the summit, and of course an excellent way to stay active/moving. Think stairmaster, but on steroids! Pretty easy to follow all the way with adequate signage and plenty of people on it at all times, except when there's a severe heat warning in effect! Most people are friendly and mindful of who has the right of way. Only a couple times someone might be blasting music a little annoyingly, but other than that, I can't get enough of this mountain. I had an amazing day hiking with friends around Piestewa this week. We originally had another…read moretrail in mind but once we arrived, the group decided on Hike 302 (freedom trail). We went 4.1 miles, 1100 elevation (two summits) and it took us about 3 hours as we took our time. On a weekday; it wasn't too crowded until we got to Piestewa summit for the downhill steps. I time of day gave us sun in the early morning chilly time and shade on the backside of the mountain after a couple miles so that was refreshing. Make sure to bring lots of water; take your time as the rocks can be slippery and a hat is a good idea for the intense sun. Parking can be tight too but people start/end at all sorts of times so just be patient.

They look like stick figures with arms raised toward the sun in the fields. I took the four mile D trail "Over the Mountain Loop." It does not matter which direction if you are completing the entire trail, but I would go with the "start" direction if you only want to do part of the trail as it heads toward the side of the mountain with a better view. Multiple signs with mile count and QR code. Even though it was only 60 degrees, it was warm in the sun with a gentle breeze. Got to say hello to a horned owl nested in a cactus umbra. I would not have seen it except a fellow hiker who visits every year told me to look over the fence. Not a large parking lot and not any nearby alternatives, so be patient. A ranger was cutting off traffic from the trailer only parking, and she was recording license plates.

It's a very short and easy climb to the top up and down from the Jomax end. Takes just few…read moreminutes. If you're looking for a fun activity for the family, it will do nicely. Bur you can make it a more serious hike if you take it from the opposite emd starting from the State Trust Land below. I do not recommend taking that longer route starting on the Jomax end because the backside is more easiky climbed than descended. With so much loose gravel and such a steep angle you can easily slip and fall if you go down it. I walk this trail multiple times each week and never tire of it.

We found only one other vehicle in the parking lot upon arrival, but it quickly filled up within 45 minutes. The kids enjoyed riding along the winding pathways and had a great time on the playground, particularly the exciting slides. Eventually, they kicked off their shoes and socks and happily spent time building sand cakes and piles. It was quite a challenge to convince them to leave, finally heading back home only after the sun had set below the horizon.

So to give some perspective to this location, it is in the arrowhead lakes community, so there's a lake near-by you can jog along. I've jogged here literally at every hour of the day and felt completely safe here. It's always clean too. Particularly for the park, there is a huge grassy area for soccer, football, frisbee, etc. To potentially describe the size, 4-5 soccer games could be going on at any one time. At the front near the parking lot is a large playground, bbq and seating areas for birthdays or get togethers, a volley ball court, a basket ball court, and a private lot for parking. All done. Now on to my daily jog!
