Whistlestop is located at the end of a dirt road (literally off the beaten trail), so don't be too worried if you wonder if you're going the right way--keep going back the road and it's just over an old rail line. The B&B is the basement of an old farm house and the room is spacious. As Brian mentioned, the room had a queen size bed, couch, working fireplace, pool table, kitchenette, and private bath. The owners, Sherry and Mike, were a delightful couple and we had a chance to peak into their beautifully renovated kitchen and meet their lovable boxer, Lucy. Tons of snacks to pick from, but easily the best were the homemade sticky buns and chocolate chip cookies. Sherry stocked the fridge and pantry with breakfast items for the next day (yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, breakfast bowls). Brian enjoyed a couple rounds of pool while I feasted on several hours of HGTV's "Property Brothers" on the biggest flat-screen TV I've seen in someone's house (60-inch?). The bed was cozy, covered with beautiful colored linens, and I think if you wanted to leave the blinds open, you could wake to a beautiful sunrise amongst the nearby trees. I woke up early Sunday morning to do a bit of reading and enjoy a cup of tea by the fireplace. Perfection. Since we were there in late March, we didn't get to enjoy this amenity, but there is a fire pit so you can make some s'mores (yes, they provide all the fixings for that too). I need to ask Brian when we can go again...it was a great weekend to unplug and just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Columbus. There are 2 large bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a large living/dining area with a fully stocked kitchen. There is a hot tub on the deck which was great for relaxing in the evenings. Also a fire pit and gas grill although you need to choose add on propane tank rental if you want to use the grill. Firewood is also an optional add on. The lodge is surrounded by woods with excellent bird watching. It is also dark enough in the evening for some star gazing. We highly recommend this spot for a family getaway (sleeps 4) - or check out the other great lodging options hosted by the Inn.

We were greeted with beautiful celtic music playing as we entered our accommodations. All the areas of the cottage were clean and inviting, and we couldn't wait to unwind in front of the gas fireplace after unloading our belongings. We spent a lot of time in the hot tub- surrounded by vibrant hues of red and orange leaves glowing in the sunlight. Wrapped in the provided robes, we sipped wine in front of the large picture window in the living room, soaking in even more of fall's beauty. On the night of his birthday, we enjoyed a six course dinner that ended with the whole dining room singing him "Happy Birthday", which made him incredibly happy. Afterward, we took flashlights and went on a night walk on one of the trails behind the cottages. Our two night stay was magical. The effort that goes into making Glenlaurel a dedication to its Scottish roots was evident in every detail of our stay and we truly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the experience.

We stayed in Room 2 on the second floor, very handsomely appointed in aqua and coffee tones, with silver accents. The room was lovely and very comfortable, both the bedroom and the en suite bathroom. I enjoyed reading a book in the chair by the window. The backyard was another highlight. There is a small deck, a fireplace, an English-style walking garden, and a main seating area with candles and comfortable camp chairs. In warm weather, it's perfect either for unwinding or for extending a gathering at the end of the day. Apparently the proprietor brings food in the morning? I was not awake in time to witness this; perhaps it is the breakfast fairy. In any case, the spread was noteworthy: besides the drinks, snacks, yogurt, fruit, and cereal available around the clock, there were uncooked eggs, miniature bagels, coffee cake or banana bread, and a variety of seasonal fruit. No matter how heterogeneous your group, everyone will find something to satisfy him- or herself. Sometimes it's the little things--such as the rubber duck in the shower stall, the small fish tank on the kitchen counter, and the soft jazz CD playing in the living room on our arrival. There was a basket of highly watchable DVD movies and a shelf of local-interest books. But the important things stand out too: the entire place was immaculate and the proprietors seem to take good care of both the property and the guests. This is a very strong 4.5. Some of our housemates were staying there for the third time, and I would not hesitate to return with them next time.

Points for beauty, for sure. The thing with most B&B's that I've been to is the welcoming/homey feeling. GVGH is literally a home but doesn't have any type of check in table or actual person welcoming you into the establishment. This is actually typically fine by me, as a biz traveler I look for convenience and a low key option to rest my head. So, GVGH's stocked kitchen (homemade yogurt FTW) and impressive breakfast buffet spread was a welcome respite for a sometimes weary and non-social traveler. The home is decorated beautifully and the patio is probably just perfect with warmer weather. I can certainly see all the care in appointing the home and the guest rooms! A few items that I wasn't crazy about: 1) The aforementioned lack of human interaction when it came to welcoming me, check-in/out, etc. I didn't see a soul for the 20 hours I was in and out of here. 2) The locking mechanism on the door gave me trouble from the get-go despite reading their shared Google doc of how-tos a few times over. Said doc was the only item I had to connect me to the property. 3) The first floor room has a half wall shower that drives me bananas. I end up sloshing water everywhere despite trying to stay as close as possible to the shower head. Those three fairly minor items aside, if you're looking for a beautifully decorated but hands-off B&B stay with thoughtful accoutrements, give German Village Guest House a try.

As soon as we found out, my wife called and was told that it was no problem, that there is a waiting list, and once it is cancelled, we would get a refund. We would be charged a $35 fee, though. Having not yet received a confirmation email, my wife called again, asking about the refund. And she talked to a very rude person who said we were not getting a refund because it included a holiday. Also snapped "it is clearly written in the confirmation" several times and completely ignored the question of someone previously giving us false information. The excuse was "I am a small business and need to survive"... but rings very hollow because there is no doubt it was re-rented, in fact, she is double dipping and making twice the money. Nice little racket, if you ask me. While I did miss the holiday clause in the confirmation (which was made 35 days before the arrival date, so not much time to cancel), the fact that we were told we were getting a refund is a huge problem. If we were told the truth, we would have made arrangements to at least partially attend. And if this is the way they treat customers, I am wondering if I didn't dodge a bullet by not going. Needless to say, I will never patronize this business.

I'd recommend just paying a little bit extra to stay either in Athens or at one of the resorts closer to Hocking Hills.

I love everything on the table! They offer buffet style homemade breakfast: the scramble egg was my favorite, I love when there's no milk, just egggggggyummmm! BUT!
