Tucked into the woods near to Hocking Hills, Ravenwood Castle is a surprise even if you already…read moreknow what you're getting yourself into. One minute you're driving along backroads in Ohio and then BAM, you're starting at a medieval castle. Ravenwood Castle is well known for its focus on games of all kinds - board games, social deduction games, scavenger hunts - you name it, they have it. My mom and I came for a special weekend where they were hosting a murder mystery. Put on by a separate company, but hosted within Ravenwood Castle, our murder mystery experience started on Friday night and ran through Sunday morning. We worked in teams to solve the mystery and along the way participated in goofy and quirky games and puzzles to help us score points. When you stay, you can eat on site, or you can book a cabin and bring & prepare food in a small kitchenette. Alternatively, there are a few places you can order from / go out to in the surrounding areas, but nothing is particularly close by because the castle is in a remote area. While I found the food to be mediocre, the beer and whiskey selection is great, and a surprise stand out was their version of butterbeer, which is dangerously chuggable. If you're someone who loves board games and wants a weekend away to connect with friends or family, this is a great place to go!

There is a plethora to choose from as soon as you check in or when you're dining in the pub or premade scavenger hunts to do while walking around the property during your stay. My husband and I aren't board game enthusiasts but we did have a great time at the castle. After checking in we made our way to the King Arthur Suite, a short walk from the check-in desk and through the dining hall. The door to the King Arthur Suite is quite literally in the middle of the dining hall which we personally felt was kind of awkward because it is a prime gathering space for most of the guests. The two story suite was spacious, painted in a funky green and featured a giant jacuzzi tub which was the highlight of the room. A comfortable four poster bed on the second story made us feel like royalty and is close to the door that leads to a porch over looking the grounds behind the castle. My husband made a fire in the large fire pit outside of the castle that is closer to the cabins. The area was stocked with wood and we spent the majority of our evening enjoying a warm fire on the cool fall night. The pub downstairs serves beer and basic bar fare. It wasn't very busy when we stopped by but service was wonderful and we felt very welcome. Another couple proposed the four of us play a game together and we reluctantly obliged. Our patient competitors taught us how to play "Ticket To Ride" and it was a blast. So, in the end, Ravenwood Castle (and our new friends) did turn us into game people.

Stayed for a nice October weekend in the smaller cabin…read more Place was cute, clean about everything you need. Kitchen, hot tub, fire pit, grill. Super friendly owner very informative about the area. A few things on the negative side. The bed was not the best hard and could be updated. Tin roof + tall trees+ acorns=LOUD noises sometimes. Not best about 2am ha ha. But really nice place overall.

My wife and I decided to spend our ten year anniversary in a cabin in the Hocking Hills area. I…read morespent a few hours combing through all of the options online trying to find the one that looked like it would best suit our personal tastes. As soon as I saw the pictures for Bit Of Country I was sure it would be the one. I was so correct! We stayed for the weekend in the Three Oaks Cabin. The day prior to our departure a large snow storm hit dropping about 6 inches on the area. So we were worried about making it in safely. Thankfully the roads were cleared by then and we made it to the property with no issues. The drive from the road to the inn and cabins is steep and had luckily been cleared off as well. Even in the best of weather it could be tricky to get up there so a small car might have some issues. John was just outside the barn as we drove up. He waved to us and greeted us with a welcoming smile. He directed us to the cabin and walked us in to show us everything and answer any questions we had. He was extremely polite and welcoming and made sure that we had plenty of firewood our whole stay. The cabin is perfect. When I hear the word cabin, this is exactly the image I picture. Hard wood floors throughout, Exposed beams and panels, and a large loft above. And of course a large stone wood burning fireplace! The large stone fireplace is on the right as you walk in. There are two recliners and a couch around the fireplace and a TV (Dish TV), VCR, DVD player in the corner. There is also a CD player and radio on the other corner. All the chairs and sofa are plush and comfortable. There is a wardrobe to hang up coats and holds a few board games; Scrabble, Connect Four and Battleship. To the left is a bed and the kitchen area to the rear of the cabin. The cabinets in the kitchen are all rustic looking and cabin perfect. The kitchen has everything you should need. Microwave, stove, oven, refrigerator, coffee maker and toaster all worked perfectly. There are plenty of dishes, glasses, pots and pans, and utensils for your use. Just past the kitchen is the bathroom. The shower tub is full sized and water pressure was good and hot for the duration of our stay. Plenty of towels in the cabinet as well. There is a also a gas heater on the back wall by the back door. It works VERY WELL. The upstairs loft has two single beds and two double beds. And it was much warmer than the rest of the cabin. Almost too hot. Thankfully there is a box fan and a ceiling fan to keep it from being overbearing. Hot air does indeed rise people. The hot tub is on the back porch and is covered. It worked perfectly and was clean as a whistle. As was the whole cabin. As with anywhere when it got really cold at night there were a few drafty places but nothing sitting by the fireplace couldn't alleviate! One note is that there is no cell phone service there. John said if you walked to the top of the hill in front of the cabin you can get a signal but I did not test that. They also have Wi-Fi at the main house/B&B that all guests are welcome to use. Not available in the cabins though. I recommended just turning the cell phones off and enjoy being disconnected for a little bit! Bit of Country cabins is a wonderful place to get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing retreat. I can't wait to return one day!

The incident occurred at night and there is no cell phone service at The Grand Slam Lodge. They didn't call 911 or the office for help also because there is nothing they could have done by the time they got there and could have triggered the drone operater where ever they were. The drone left after her fiancé looked at the drone. Video evidence. The worst part is the company did absolutely nothing to help aid in the terror they felt that night. Not one single sorry, not one reply to the original complaint until called. They said no one should be staying in the back building overnight but there was at least one worker. Their email back to my friends message was "Write whatever review you'd like, we'll rebut it" This really shows what kind of company this is. Highly recommend to never ever rent from this company.

Under windows near the staircase the patch work for leaks is awful and very obvious since they are painted white and the room is not white itself. ( funny the patch work was painted over but not the slur?) The major issue with the cabin which is Sand Run is that there is a Blatant RACIAL SLUR SPRAY PAINTED ON THE SHED FACING THE PROPERTY. We brought this to their attention at checkout and was met with nothing but excuses and a series of um's and oh's. They're is not an excuse for this type of ignorance to be completely ignored and not painted over. Children were able to see and repeat the words written and it was visible to everyone as we came and left the property. Highly inappropriate and disturbing. It is disgusting that the company has the audacity to know the slur was there and did nothing to protect the businesses integrity and they offered no logical explanation for this being up still while people of color where staying on the property including black and white children playing together were exposed to this hatred.

Whistlestop is located at the end of a dirt road (literally off the beaten trail), so don't be too worried if you wonder if you're going the right way--keep going back the road and it's just over an old rail line. The B&B is the basement of an old farm house and the room is spacious. As Brian mentioned, the room had a queen size bed, couch, working fireplace, pool table, kitchenette, and private bath. The owners, Sherry and Mike, were a delightful couple and we had a chance to peak into their beautifully renovated kitchen and meet their lovable boxer, Lucy. Tons of snacks to pick from, but easily the best were the homemade sticky buns and chocolate chip cookies. Sherry stocked the fridge and pantry with breakfast items for the next day (yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, breakfast bowls). Brian enjoyed a couple rounds of pool while I feasted on several hours of HGTV's "Property Brothers" on the biggest flat-screen TV I've seen in someone's house (60-inch?). The bed was cozy, covered with beautiful colored linens, and I think if you wanted to leave the blinds open, you could wake to a beautiful sunrise amongst the nearby trees. I woke up early Sunday morning to do a bit of reading and enjoy a cup of tea by the fireplace. Perfection. Since we were there in late March, we didn't get to enjoy this amenity, but there is a fire pit so you can make some s'mores (yes, they provide all the fixings for that too). I need to ask Brian when we can go again...it was a great weekend to unplug and just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Columbus. (although, they have free Wifi, just in case you need it :) )
