Whistlestop B&B - The bed...Super comfy!

Whistlestop B&B

(11 reviews)

Building on Brian's review...Whistlestop was the perfect location for a quick getaway to Hocking…read moreHills. We only stayed one night, but this stop would also work well for a longer visit. Whistlestop is located at the end of a dirt road (literally off the beaten trail), so don't be too worried if you wonder if you're going the right way--keep going back the road and it's just over an old rail line. The B&B is the basement of an old farm house and the room is spacious. As Brian mentioned, the room had a queen size bed, couch, working fireplace, pool table, kitchenette, and private bath. The owners, Sherry and Mike, were a delightful couple and we had a chance to peak into their beautifully renovated kitchen and meet their lovable boxer, Lucy. Tons of snacks to pick from, but easily the best were the homemade sticky buns and chocolate chip cookies. Sherry stocked the fridge and pantry with breakfast items for the next day (yogurt, fruit, oatmeal, breakfast bowls). Brian enjoyed a couple rounds of pool while I feasted on several hours of HGTV's "Property Brothers" on the biggest flat-screen TV I've seen in someone's house (60-inch?). The bed was cozy, covered with beautiful colored linens, and I think if you wanted to leave the blinds open, you could wake to a beautiful sunrise amongst the nearby trees. I woke up early Sunday morning to do a bit of reading and enjoy a cup of tea by the fireplace. Perfection. Since we were there in late March, we didn't get to enjoy this amenity, but there is a fire pit so you can make some s'mores (yes, they provide all the fixings for that too). I need to ask Brian when we can go again...it was a great weekend to unplug and just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Columbus. (although, they have free Wifi, just in case you need it :) )

Mike and Sherry were wonderful hosts and had great recommendations for local spots to hit. They really make you feel at home. The hot tub was nice and so was the private fire pit. I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast!

We come to hocking hills often and thought checking it out would be could so we could potentially book here. Unfortunately, staff declined helping or accommodating us in any capacity. We weren't welcome at the pub or to make a dinner reservation. Then I asked the assistant what options were around in the area and she played dumb. It felt like phony, unprofessional and not helpful. This place should be open to the public and strive to have better customer service and be a bit more welcoming. I recommend staying at Amongst the Trees, instead or cut above cabins.

I brought my husband for his birthday weekend, and we had such a fun, relaxing time surrounded by the peaceful scenery. We were greeted with beautiful celtic music playing as we entered our accommodations. All the areas of the cottage were clean and inviting, and we couldn't wait to unwind in front of the gas fireplace after unloading our belongings. We spent a lot of time in the hot tub- surrounded by vibrant hues of red and orange leaves glowing in the sunlight. Wrapped in the provided robes, we sipped wine in front of the large picture window in the living room, soaking in even more of fall's beauty. On the night of his birthday, we enjoyed a six course dinner that ended with the whole dining room singing him "Happy Birthday", which made him incredibly happy. Afterward, we took flashlights and went on a night walk on one of the trails behind the cottages. Our two night stay was magical. The effort that goes into making Glenlaurel a dedication to its Scottish roots was evident in every detail of our stay and we truly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the experience.

Burr Oak State Park Lodge - View inside the lodge

This review is for the lodge restaurant. (not the lodge, the cabin, or the state park)…read more Yikes! Please avoid eating here. If you must, the way to go is order a pizza to go and pick it up when it is ready. The pros: beautiful view over the water, great at sun down. The cons: the food took way too long to come out. They forgot to bring the soup and salad we order before the meal, and by the time they went to get my soup, they had run out of that kind! See attached photos and video of the fish. Sad to say both my wife and I ordered that same meal. When it finally did come out the fish was so deeply fried that it was rock hard and there was not much remanence of any kind of fish meat left to be scavenged. Not even a forest dwelling mongrel would have gone for this disastrous preparation. I asked the waitress if it was supposed to be like this and she said "yes". (looking back that is a pretty funny answer) I told her that we were not going to be able to eat the meal. I mean even if we wanted to, it really wasn't food at this point. Is there anything she could do for us? After going to the back and having a discussion with her manger, she came back and said she could provide 30% off of each fish meal..... that is so close to doing nothing. And it wasn't just us. After we "ate" another couple stopped us and told us about the terrible experience they had with the meal. Burr Oak Lodge Restaurant, I suggest you just serve pizza.

Peaceful winter weekend…read more My husband and I decided to stay here for a relaxing weekend and it did not disappoint. We started our journey at the nature center and met Julie. She gave us great advice on hiking trails and restaurants in the area. We proceeded to the lodge to check into our room. The lodge is older but well maintained. It has a beautiful lobby with large windows to overlook the lake. Lots of seating areas, games to play and a fireplace. Our room was huge. It had a bedroom and living room area plus two bathrooms. The lodge has everything you need if you don't want to leave - pool, restaurant, exercise room, hiking trails, etc. Plus the best part we practically had the place to ourselves!
