On a whim, my husband suggested we book a sauna pod for a Saturday in January while staying in Hocking Hills. To my surprise, there was still an available time slot so I quickly booked it and waited with anticipation for our time to arrive. We checked in at the front office where we were greeted politely and were given instructions on how to get to, enter and use our sauna pod. The Pods are located right across the street from the Chalets so I was worried at first about having adequate privacy but once we entered the Pod I felt I was transported to the middle of the woods. My favorite part of the Pod was that it was Bluetooth equipped so I was able to play some folk music over the speakers to enhance my woodsy experience. Towels and bottled water are also provided for you in the Pod. We booked an hour, which I thought might be too long in the heat for me personally but after taking the recommended breaks, it didn't feel long enough. Having had a fabulous experience with the Chalets in Hocking Hills in the past, I decided to give them another go to celebrate my birthday for a few days in February. I booked online and the process was really easy. I got reminder emails, a welcome message when it was time to check-in and everything was contactless when I arrived. While I spent a good amount of time outside of my cabin (Laurelwood), I also spent a good amount of time there. It snowed a lot so I soaked up the giant window views, enjoyed the hot tub, and lots of relaxing. My only big complaint was that of the cabin itself. I couldn't figure out what it was but the entire building was just loud. Like so loud, I couldn't sleep. Had I known, I would have brought ear plugs and trust me, I have them thanks to living in the city. Despite not being able to sleep my two nights there, and constant loud ass humming all throughout, the rest of the experience was solid. The space was comfy, included all the necessities, and they even plowed the driveway after the snow. I love coming here and the Chalets are a great choice. I just might ask about the sound issues on my next visit. read more

Stay at the Chalets was a disaster. Terrible odor upon entering our cabin. Smelled like dead animal. Possibly a mouse but couldn't find one. At least 4 mousetraps are set around the house. complained to front desk and they had housekeeping check and they did not find anything. Came back after dinner and was informed of this and also was told they had a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom A frame we could go to but with 5 of us that wouldn't work well. Bought several air fresheners which somewhat helped but still became nauseous middle of the night and had to sleep on the porch. Needless to say would never recommend Chalets or VRBO. We have stayed with what used to be called old man's cave chalets several times. It's always been great now it's chalets in hocking or something like that. Do not rent the Cumberland cabin because there is now a mobile home across the road that when you go out onto the back deck, they turn a spotlight on you so it's no longer private and very intrusive especially with a hot tub there so research the locations if you can before you go because the locals apparently don't like renters.p.s. we're in our late 60s so we're not partier just a little Bluetooth music device device on the back porch and the search light comes on as soon as the hot tub is opened. I'm sure there are great cabins elsewhere in the chalets and hocking assortment. read more

We rented Sauna Pod 2. The front desk was really accommodating at check-in. They provide a water for each person and a towel. The Bluetooth connection in the sauna pod was really nice, and there was Wi-Fi. Definitely would recommend this experience for a group. Only note for sauna pod team would be to add privacy curtains. Spent the weekend here with the wife and two kids. The A-frame houses are perfect for a weekend away and very affordable. The house has all the amenities you would need for a nice weekend. The location is excellent to hike the popular kid friendly trails. The pool and playground were excellent for the kids to burn off what little energy they had from a day of hiking. What impressed me the most was the staff. They were friendly and truly made you feel welcome. We got a pizza from Captain Ron's one evening and sat at the back of the car to eat and let the kids play on the playground. One of the employees (Charlie I think was his name) was passing by and stopped to see how our stay was going. He was great to converse with and had excellent recommendations for the remainder of our stay. You could tell he enjoyed what he does for work and cares about the guest having a great time. Drove three hours to use the sauna pods. The website says they close at 7pm. We arrived at 4:30pm. The lady said we were too late they couldn't book anyone after 5pm. I stated it's not 5 and she said she would have to turn it on and warm it up. Didn't realize it was that laboring to flip a switch two and a half hours before close. I've been wanting to try this for so long so it is definitely disappointing. I've wanted to rent a cabin as well but after seeing how lazy the staff was I will not be coming back. I will gladly spend my money elsewhere. Waste of a vacation day and a waste of fuel. Now I get to drive three hours home. read more

To be clear, this review is only for the Sauna Pods! My boyfriend and I rented one of the sauna pods for two hours for Valentine's Day and it turned out to be a great idea! The sauna pods are very affordable and a great way to relax at the end of a long day of hiking. My favorite feature of the sauna pods was the Bluetooth capabilities that allowed you to jam to your favorite music while hanging out in the sauna part of the pod. The view within the pod is also great as the way that they are positioned allows you to see little to none of the cabins surrounding you. My only drawback here is that, with two hours in the sauna, there is no bathroom around if you aren't staying on the property! With all the water you're consuming to stay hydrated while in the sauna, this would be nice to have. Pro-Tip: Make sure to use the bathroom right beforehand! read more

We stayed back in September, I noticed I forgot to post my review! This was perfect for a Covid safe getaway! The A Frame was clean and cozy. Hot tub was great! We were called an hour before check-in to say that the cabin was already cleaned and ready for us ahead of time! We didn't have to go to the office, they emailed us the key code. We rented a sauna pod for two hours over Valentine's Day weekend. Thankfully it was winter time and about 10 degrees outside - not sure how you do this in the middle of summer! I recommend the two hour session - bring plenty of water, not too much alcohol, and a customized music playlist so you can connect to Bluetooth. This is a really great "idea". Unfortunately, it is not as advertised. The pods are less than private. The "changing area" is the main door into the pod, which is clear glass. The view is "wooded" but not as described. The blue tooth speaker didn't work in our pod. If we tried to connect, it would connect to the pod next to us instead. Lastly, the pod was supposed to be pre heated. Upon entry, it was cold. Less than ideal when it's only 40 degrees outside , and you've just taken your clothes off. We rented for 1 hour. This place is wonderful! Family owned & been around since the 80's. EVERYONE we have ever worked with here as been so nice and Customer focused. It's always clean, & not cluttered. Every A Frame & Cabin has a hot tub. And, there are awesome cedar saunas for 1-2 people you can rent as well. We live in the area but stay with them fairly often for the lovely wooded getaways. The last time we stayed over the 4th of July week, there were some power outages due to storms and the management was amazing about it! Gave us a refund so we could enjoy it again another time. WARNING!!! BED BUGS!! We stayed at A -Frame 16 and woke up at 3am itching filled with bites. It was my 40th birthday and we both took time off our businesses to celebrate it, and it was ruined! The owner only reimbursed us for our stay, but not one apology or response to our email. We were polite in explaining our experience, but nothing back. It's one thing to have a horrible bed bug experience, but not get any sympathy or even one response from the owner was disappointing and made it worse. Once you stay in an Old Man's Cave Chalets Lodge or cabin, you'll never want to stay anywhere else. I have stayed in the Hocking Hills area using a few different cabin rental companies, and OMCC is by far my favorite. Every cabin that I have stayed in has been so clean that you really could eat off the floor. The kitchens are well stocked, there's a hot tub at every site (even the smaller A Frame cabins) and the front desk staff at the main office couldn't be any nicer. When/if their contract requires that they reimburse you for damages incurred while staying within their cabins, you will receive reimbursement in the form of a gift certificate toward a return visit. We spent our Thanksgiving holiday with NO running water, no working toilet, no power, no heat, no telephone. Multiple expensive trips to Walmart buying coolers and ice in order to keep our holiday food from going bad. But hey, that's fine, because our reimbursement gift certificate is in the mail. And the owner, Matt, LAUGHED as he told me this. Great guy. Aside from that horrific bit of the experience, we found our cabin almost laughably uncomfortable. From the ancient lumpy mattress, to the broke-backed couch, I can assure you that your search for a comfortable stay will NOT end here. If you want fresh towels, even after a 4-5 day stay, you will be required to drive 20 minutes to their office in order to exchange them for fresh linens. And I hope you're not planning to do any cooking; you'll find the kitchen about as well equipped as a barn. Absolutely, positively no thought has been put into their guests' comfort. The shower floor is even lined with the sharp, rigid plastic you'd typically find at a dog washing station. I could go on and on. If you do decide to rent, I would highly recommend bringing flip-flops for the shower, your own furniture, a camper toilet and a bucket, candles and flashlights, and every single cooking utensil or necessity that you may possibly anticipate needing. Check in at the office at the bottom of the hill first, then drive up, where there are two pods. Ours wasn't setup, so we had to move our stuff over to the other. There is no privacy - clear glass doors through the pod, and no where to change (outside of the pod) or go to the bathroom once you're up there. We took turns standing in front of the doors to change. Otherwise, the sauna was great once we finally got started. They provide towels and water at check in, and there is a Bathroom at the office. We chose Omcc because they had pet friendly cabins and I had a $60 off coupon from the Entertainment Book. After setting foot into our cabin I was so happy we chose Omcc. The cabin was spotless! It was so clean and well maintained! That immediately put my mind at ease and I knew it'd be a good trip. We loved the hot tub and secluded back deck. At first, we were put off by how close the cabins are to each other, but it really didn't effect our trip at all. It felt very private. We loved the sky lights on the deck and in the cabin. Our pets felt very comfortable too. They loved the cozy first floor. We used the fire place both nights to heat things up. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and the bathroom had enough of everything and thoughtful storage. I was excited to see Bath & Body Works products!! The beds had lots of available linens so we had blankets to use on the couch too. The only things I'd put on my wish list for the next trip would be a bigger flat screen TV with a better working DVD player and I wished the living room faced the fire place, but I am not sure that'd work with the space. Definitely bring extra towels to use outside by the hot tub and some scented candles really help create some homeyness! We booked a cabin and the hot tub was not working until the second day( 2 day trip). We called ahead of time to make sure that the hot tub would be working as this was the whole reason we went on a cabin vacation and we were assured that it would be. Asked for a half hour of the sauna pod to make up for it (there are two time slots the entire day that are taken) and the manager said the best he could do is give us a discount for the sauna pod. We stayed at the Old Man Cave Chalet's over Labor Day weekend 2012. The front desk was very friendly and helpful. The chalet itself is fairly easy to get to. The roads were paved getting to it. Each chalet has a two car "driveway." They are small A-frame houses. The bedroom downstairs was a decent size. The bathroom was a very good size. The "kitchen" had a dorm size refrigerator, and a hot plate looking type stove. The living room had a chair and a love seat. There was a four seat table to eat at. The loft was fine. All of the beds were VERY comfortable! The deck was very quaint and the hotub was nice. It was not very big. They have someone check the hotub daily and fill it when necessary. Small TV in the living room with Directv. This is definitely in the cut though. Cell phone reception was spotty at best and you need (if you can believe they still exist) phone cards if you want to make long distance calls on the phone. The swimming pool was nice but cold. It was probably in the high 70's temperature wise, but that was because we were the last weekend of the year. It is about a 5-7 minute ride to the Old Man Caves from the chalet. Premium prices, but less than premium lodgings. Zero attention to details, less than clean, and not at all comfortable. First the good: they are located in a nice area, the employee seemed friendly, and I liked that I could control the temperature in the A-frame myself. However..... both beds are horrible! My back is killing me, and no one slept well at all. The lack of curtains did not help our sleep. There was a large amount of rodent droppings right outside the back door! We had To sweep up before we could use the hot tub. But there was no broom, so I had to use the tiny fireplace broom. Seems odd you would clean the whole place and check the hot tub, but not take care of the mess left by the animals. The hot tub was turned at an angle so as to completely obscure the view with the lid, BUT just right so the neighbors could look in at you. During our 3 days we never saw anyone checking or servicing the hot tub. Again, for the price I expected that the little details would be taken care of, but really I feel a little ripped off. There are WAY nicer places in Hocking Hills that are a much better value for your money. Management really needs to work on better more comfortable lodgings. We stayed at the Alpine Cabin 4/18-4/20/19. The kitchen and dining area was very spacious. Loved the swing on the back porch near the hottub. Everything inside and out was very clean. A washer and dryer at this location was a big plus. Only issue that I can think of was the cabins being so close to the State Route and some traffic noise. Lots. Of. Stairs. Good for a workout, bad if you're out of shape. Well worth it though. Beautiful place to hike. The hiking trails here easy to walk except for the stairs and more stairs around every turn and almost always going up no matter which direction you're going in. But the trails are wide and flat, well marked, and not hard to walk (again except for the stairs). The scenery is beautiful, among the better places I've been and I used to go hiking every weekend all my life growing up in Connecticut. There were three waterfalls that I saw. The upper falls, lower falls, and a small unmarked falls at the entrance. The waterfalls and stream are just a trickle and I have to wonder if it flows deeper and thus the waterfalls more spectacular in winter and early spring. The facilities here are top notch for a state park. There's bathrooms that are disgusting but more than the usual park bathrooms that are more than a portopotty but not a real bathroom. But there's a snack bar with all kinds of food and ice cream, a gift shop that would probably be cool if it was open. There's a nature center too but it's hardly worth your time. You might want to bring a swimsuit and splash around in the water under the falls if that's allowed. The trails are exhausting with all the climbing and we didn't even walk the gorge trail. So pace yourself and don't try to do the whole thing in one day unless you're in shape. Don't run, it's dangerous with lots of places to fall to your death or dismemberment. Pack a lunch and eat it by the falls and bring water, and bring a first aid kit because you always should when you're in the woods and because out here in the middle of nowhere an ambulance wouldn't get there until the next day (and that's after you hiked out to get help because there's no cell phone reception). This place is way out in the middle of nowhere and there's no cell phone reception. So don't rely on GPS on your phone to get you there. It won't. And make sure you have plenty of gas and your car is in good shape. If you break down out here, you're hitchhiking. There aren't even many houses to knock on doors to use a phone to call for help. When I was growing up we didn't even have cell phones. They were play things of the rich in those days. I loved being out in nature away from contact. Now I hate being off the grid. I get nervous with no contact with the outside world and no way to call for help, no way to find my way if I get lost. It's one of those things I always lived without and was fine but now that I have it I can't live without it. Life is full of those things. But this one could actually be life or death important. I booked a few weeks ago. The cabin flooded the second night there. We spent hours cleaning the cabin. Two cell phone chargers were destroyed. Spoke with management and they ended up calling it an act of god even though he initially told me the AC unit line was frozen. Management has essentially ended any form of communication and has not at the minimum replaced OUR damaged belongings let alone make up for the poor stay. Very frustrating situation. We stayed in the Hemlock Cabin, which proved to be just the right size for one couple and one other person (though it could house up to three couples if necessary). It's listed as a "romantic cabin" on the official website. Pets are not allowed. Everything in the cabin was pretty, clean, and functional. The TV is 1080p, some of the best high definition around as of 2013. Everything in the kitchen and bathrooms worked well. There was plenty of hot water in the bathrooms and kitchen, but be warned: the water around these parts kind of smells like sulfur. It doesn't taste bad, but it's smellier than my uncle, and that's saying something. I must point out, though, that there is no Wi-Fi or cell phone reception. The only place where you can access the Internet is at the main office. This was frustrating at first, but it was nice to have a break from the constant onslaught of Internet news and annoying phone calls. Be warned: don't leave your cell on overnight to use it as an alarm clock. The batteries will run out fast as it searches for a satellite in vain all night. There is only one clock in the cabin, so bring your own alarm clocks. The hot tub wasn't too hot, but it was just fine for a ninny like me. Be sure to use the blue knobs to crank the bubble jet action up to eleven! And the Jacuzzi in the basement's bathroom was incredibly relaxing. It's big enough that you can lean back and submerge most of your body in the water. Also, it's relaxing to sit out on the deck and look at the woods while appreciating the quiet stillness of the area. Oftentimes, you can't even hear the hum of distant traffic. There's a swinging bench on the deck if that tickles your fancy. I should warn you about the basement, though. It contains two beds, each big enough for a couple, but it's awfully cold unless you turn on the noisy heater. So be sure to dress warm if you can't handle noise while you sleep. Plus, footsteps from upstairs echo down surprisingly loudly, so you might need earplugs if the people upstairs will wake up before you. An eye mask might help too since light starts to sneak in around six. All the beds in the cabins are stiff, unfortunately. And as of April 2013, the cabins don't recycle--what's up with that? On the bright side, checking in and out is easy, and the main office even offers a variety of books and DVDs to enjoy. Nothing is within walking distance (aside from a public pool and playground), but the Hocking Hills parks are just a few minutes away when driving. That's very convenient. Plus, Wal-Mart and restaurants (like McDonald's, Subway, and Bob Evan's) aren't too far. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone seeking an escape from the busy world. read more

Such great accommodations! We rented a five-bedroom house for 5 families spent for a weekend at Hocking Hills. The Chalets did not disappoint as the amenities were complete: stove, fridge, grill, coffee maker, microwave, and everything you could possibly need to never feel like you left home. This was "glamping" at it's best. Camping sucks, but I've come a long way folks... No more digging latrines to poop! The only downside was the weak wifi signal. I was having a bad case of internet withdrawal as I was unable to immediately post all my hiking selfies to Facebook. So bummed. read more

An excellent weekend getaway from the razmatazz of modern living. Old Man's Cave is one the coolest destinations in Ohio. The chalets have hot tubs in every suite. OK, I think I'll start with my Pros: Loved the seclusion of the whole cabin, however, there was another cabin to the right of us so that was a little different, we never heard those people which I was happy about. I felt checking in, everything went well, very nice guy working the check in desk. I loved Cross Creek Cabin because it was literally behind a creek, so you can hear the water flowing 24/7. I thought the cabin inside was wonderful, the smell of pine, the homey atmosphere, I mean they even had the fan going and ice in the ice trays. Such a comforting home away from home feeling. I thought it was very nice and spacious, two bedrooms, and a fireplace, with a nice sized T.V. and lovely hot tub! Some Cons: The cabin is a little hard to get to, I mean my Toyota Echo had a little trouble and there isn't even any snow, however, they do give you warning on their website. The cabin had a hot tub which is loud as it clicks on and off. Plus everything creeks, when someone is showering, the piping squeaks and bangs. I know for sure there had to be a mouse or some kind of creature around because I heard it going through things. CREEPY when you are out in the middle of NOWHERE. I'm talking ZERO cell phone service, ZERO internet...the land line is pre pay card only, which I had no idea about...annoying. One special thing about Cross Creek, I'm not sure about others is that laying on the coffee table was a book of people who have stayed in this cabin previously and wrote about their stays. We found that they all had hidden change around the cabin, which the person I was with found three. I, however, found none... It was really cute to read about the other experiences people had..like a live YELP! haha but we saw that Cedar Falls was worth seeing, so we took a 10 mile hike to see it and it totally was worth it. I loved staying here, and will absolutely go back, just for a weekend, not four days like last time :) read more

Old Man's Cave is great as a day trip, but even better as a weekend. Its the halfway point between Columbus and Athens and is an amazing feat of nature. Old Man's cave is part of a natural amusement park of caves, camping and kayaking. In this area is also the Cantwell Cliffs, Ash Cave and my personal favorite; the Rock House. It is popular for camping, hiking, and cabin rental. During the summer and spring its packed with picnickers and families. The fall finds it full of leaf peepers. The winter is not very busy but it should be as most of the falls are frozen and gorgeous. Bring a camera. Old Man's cave gets its name because of a natural formation that resembles a man's face. Clever. It is the easiest place to get to and a good starting point. Ash Cave is in the same area and full of history and mystery. Ash cave may have been used as a sacrifice site for the Indians who found it first. The ashy sand pretty much backs up this theory. I enjoy climbing the giant rock in the cave's center which gives you a "king of the mountain view" of the trickle waterfall that empties into a pool inside the cave. Picturesque. Ash cave also has HUNDREDS of names carved into it proving graffiti has been going strong since the 1800's. The latrine at this cave is especially clean, so hold it till you get here. The Rock House is a natural house of rock. Again, clever. Going inside of it makes it easy to imagine Indians sleeping in the little nooks or holding enemies at bay. To get to the Rock House you have to go down about a million steps, so be prepared to realize how unfit you are on the way up. Still, the way down is beautiful and makes you feel small up against such majesty. Cedar Falls are a series of waterfalls that lead into a pool that is excellent for wading. It reminds me of something the Goonies would have found looking for One Eyed Willie. The Devil's bathtub is a whirlpool that is not good for anything but watching. Don't even try it. Devil's bathtub is cool in the winter when the water swirls into angry frozen sculpture. Camping is fun here but you should really go for a cabin. Better deals mid week and winter, but almost all have a hot tub. And no raccoons. If you do camp, try Top of the Caves, or the primitive sites by the park's entrance. Big Timber Rd runs around the area and if you are into cars you gotta try it. Hair pin turns, drops, and hills that will let you get some air. This is a very attractive park with some fantastic scenery and nice, decently marked trails. ...though I would note when they say "strenuous" they mean it in regards to the "blue trail". The trail around the cave itself isn't too bad, though the steps are pretty uneven. There were a number of children and senior citizens when I was there who had to take it all very slowly. However, the pay off is worth it. The day I went it was ninety degrees outside, but felt maybe 80 at most in the coolness of the gorge and in the shade of the cave and trees. The cave itself is the main draw and well worth the visit. It's a gorgeous structure with lots of great photo ops. However, the crowds are pretty thick. Be careful near the edges lest unruly children try to push you over when they rush past. I didn't hang around the cave itself much during my visit and instead did the six mile loop of blue trail to red trail. The blue trail is the prettier of the two, tracing the river bed with its myriad colors. The surrounding cliff faces are very attractive with windswept sedimentary striping, and worth seeing. The river, though, was particularly pretty. During my trip, the water levels were very low, but the colors ridiculously vibrant. Each area of the river has a different color of sediment, changing its color completely with the levels so low. Where they mix, there's something of a rainbow effect that is just stunning. Of course, the trade off is that the waterfalls are pretty much dried to nothing at the moment... Still, the rock faces they usually drop from are attractive in their own right and kids can still splash in the pool where it would normally cascade. Though gorgeous and worth the trek, this path is pretty tricky. There are a number of areas that require you to scramble up or across rocks and even tree limbs. I did see a number of elderly people and folks with babies who didn't seem to be having much trouble, but I'm not sure I would recommend it for anyone who has problems with climbing or strenuous exercise. Even stairs, where they exist, can be ridiculously deep or tricky. So, use caution. The other path up on the cliff - the red path - is.... more typical. It goes through the woods which is attractive, tranquil, and pleasant, but it's hard to find it too exciting after the beauty of the blue trail. It does lead to the Rose Lake dam, though, which is a very pretty vista indeed. Also, aside from one rather steep hill leading up from the Cedar Falls side, the path is level, even, and easy going. The parking lot and visitor center at Old Man's Cave is, as of Summer 2012, under construction, but everything is still open. If you plan to do the round-trip hike, you can also park at Cedar Falls instead. read more

Second time renting a chalet, this spring break. Rooms have been clean, well maintained and in great locations. Two issues. We stayed in Pine Creek. The master bed was so uncomfortable. It squeaked so much ! Almost with every breath. You could not move without alerting the whole house. And the floor in that room was just as squeaky. Didn't sleep much during our visit The other problem was the water. It smelled so strong of sewer. Afraid to brush my teeth in it, let alone drink it. Showering was unpleasant to say the least. I really like the company, this cabin could have been wonderful, great private location, had the other issues not been present. read more

I have a memory of coming here and walking with my grandpa one Sunday after church. We didn't go very far because obviously, church clothes, but it was clear to me even then that this was a very special place. Although I don't live in Hocking County anymore, Old Man's Cave is definitely a gem and completely worth a visit, no matter where you're coming from. I have seen a lot of parks, etc, and this is probably one of the most well kept and cleanest, even though the State of Ohio doesn't seem to think parks are as important anymore. The Devil's bathtub is awesome, cedar falls is awesome. Pretty much everything is awesome as long as there hasn't been a lack of rain. Then it just looks like a big hole in the ground. There is an excellent photography contest ever April that is interested to attend even if you don't participate. Just being out in the parks watching people take pictures is pretty cool. read more
