Finally!!!! A PT who can figure out my complicated chronic achy stuff. Tamar and her team give me the perfect combo of manual work (waaaaay more time than the measly 10min you'd get at a PT visit elsewhere) plus movement on their pilates and other equipment for strengthening weak muscles. Plus there are simple homework exercises to do and the phone app makes them easy to understand and finish on a timer, for people like me who hate PT homework it's like having a trainer there doing it with you. Almost instantly she cut my pain in half and I am definitely going back to do more sessions.... each time I go in I feel better. They have a personal trainer there too (as long as there is no lockdown) so once you move out of your injury you can learn functional movement and get in top shape with someone really good, in the same location. The office is really strict about Covid-19 procedures... they have air filters, sanitize everything etc. and of course you are masked and so are they (as of 12/2020). The professionalism and compassion of Tamar is bar none but especially her manual work on the rib cage and thoracic spine is unlike anything I have ever experienced with ANY PT or massage therapist, she got my ribs to move and that adjustment reduced pain in my hips far below. My experience at Thrive has been the best physical therapy treatment I have ever had. Valerie Harris was my PT and she has an incredible way of listening to you, pinpointing and treating the issue in session, helping you understand the root cause (she's a fantastic teacher/explainer), and then identifying the right set of exercises to strength train at Thrive - and also come up with a home exercise program. The spirit of the practice is really collaborative so I can also speak to the talents of Tamar Amitay and Scott Teagarden too. Everyone is really invested in doing what they can to support your healing journey. The front of house/behind the scenes team is also amazing. Scheduling is super easy as they are really responsive via email and phone. They do the hard legwork of calling insurance, figuring out benefits, etc so the billing process is very smooth. When seeking out a PT for post-operative recovery for biceps tendonosis, my doctor gave me long list TP centers . When I said I wanted a TP that integrates elements of somatic practices into their rehabilitation programs when deemed necessary and beneficial, she directed me specifically to Thrive. I'm so glad she did. Thrive's therapists are relaxed and friendly, kind and concerned experts who are deeply devoted to their patients and practices. The care I've received has gone smoothly without a hitch. The first 2 weeks after shoulder surgery are all about pain management. I felt much relieved by the time I left each visit. Throughout this worst part of recovery, my upbeat therapist reassured me the third week was on it's way and that I'd feel much better by then! And I did. I'm in the fifth week now, and continue to feel better and better. I look forward to each visit, as I leave feeling renewed. My therapist's supportive, positive manner is infectious. And as I can see in the exercise area as I walk in, all the therapists strive to create positive therapist-patient relationship. That room is full of smiles. It inspires to do my with "homework ". While, yes, I remain disappointed that this has not panned out for us, I understand the reasoning for sending us elsewhere. I am also glad that the description of the services has been updated to better reflect available expertise. ORIGINAL - I made several appointments for my son for PT here weeks in advance. We were willing to wait for the therapist qualified in the required technique. I selected this place because of the location which was a short walk from our house. After another week I received a call from the owner saying that the therapist will not accept new patients. My son has another medical condition and his schedule is very full already. The owner recommended another place that is 30 minutes travel time away from us instead. It is recommended that PT is performed three times a week and of course no offices seem to be open on weekends. I am having a hard time figuring out how we can fit this into our schedule with my son's school, medical appointments and other activities. It is very disappointing to have found a place, secured appointments and then be told to go elsewhere. read more

I had a fantastic PT experience at Thrive, after I injured my back which was causing sciatic pain. I should also add that the Thrive team helped me in the past as well with recovering from knee and Achilles' tendon surgeries. NOTE: I live in NYC not SF! I am a 30 year veteran of PT for a variety of injuries. Bottom line: I do not think any can equal what Thrive offers. This review is long overdue. But I write now because of a recent appointment with Tamar in the midst of Covid-19. I was just dx with tendonitis in my right hip & am trying to prevent a second hip replacement. I felt safer in the studio than in the streets. By the time I left, my right leg was operating 50% better. Tamar is whip smart, an anatomy wonk, intuitive & caring. She knows what is just enough to progress you, yet not overload you. In 2019, I also had a terrific experience at Thrive. I was stalled after a hip replacement complicated by scoliosis. I met Tamar at a specialized training for handling patients with scoliosis. Later I learned that she & her staff are constantly investing in their own development. And new technologies too, like BFR even. After 6 months, my pain level had gone down to a 1-2, I was stronger, and my gait/balance had significantly improved. Thrive does take insurance where you pay-as-you-go but they submit for you. Her staff stays on top of this so you get properly reimbursed. So you get the personalized "private pay" experience ... instead of the "cookie cutter" approach that can come with using your insurance. Could not recommend more highly. read more

Thrive PT was integral in my rehabilitation from a total hip replacement at age 37. Amy McGorry was extremely knowledgeable, and provided a high level of care and support during a hard recovery. I finally found a PT practice that took the time to listen, evaluate and explain both my condition, the reasons for it and what I needed to do to get stronger. I have been to PT practices at Columbia, Yale and Lifespan (RI) and a number of chiropractors. I work in Healthcare so have been to the "best". However, Thrive is the first place that actually performed a comprehensive evaluation, manipulating my back to determine the causes of my pain and who did not come with a pre-conceived idea of what I needed to do to get better. There was no cookie-cutter approach here. Great explanations. Tamar patiently explained the terms and the physiology and was clear about what I needed to change in order to strengthen my back to prevent persistent back pain. I went to Thrive for the first time starting in July 2012 after not being able to sit upright/walk (for more than five minutes) for approximately 8 months. I'm 29 years old and have been an athlete my entire life until I went to law school. Out of the blue, my lower back had horrible pain to the point where I could not sit or walk for more than five minutes at a time. Over the next 8 months my entire back tightened up and stayed in spasm for months. I went to the top neuro Drs in new york and had countless tests, all done at the best hospitals by the highest caliber Drs. I tried alternative medicine, acupuncture, muscle tendon injections and spent an enormous sum of money trying to fix this debilitating injury with no improvement. I then tried physical therapy at numerous highly rated places around Manhattan with little to no success. It is approximately 10 months after my first appointment with Tamar at Thrive and I can finally enjoy life again. I just finished my first pain free week and can't thank them enough. Tamar, Valerie and Amy at Thrive are excellent at every aspect of patient care from listening to the patient to diagnosis and treatment. I've been to over 15 physical therapists before them and I can confidentially say that their level of knowledge of their craft and what causes pain in the human body is on a different level than any others I've encountered. Thrive is a different type of physical therapy practice, they have the knowledge to accurately diagnose and understand what is causing the pain and then the training and patience to give you the correct exercises to do in their gym under their guidance, as well as at home. I cannot recommend Thrive highly enough, I have been going there on and off for several years for a variety of problems (knee, back, shoulder) and have always been helped within just a few sessions. Treatments are a combination of hand-on manual treatment by therapist and supervised exercise with an exercise program to do at home, Most recently I went for leg and hip problem which Tamar traced to my foot, and since she has worked on this I no longer have pain and can resume my normal activities. I also appreciate the aesthetics- the cleanliness of the space, the privacy of the treatment rooms and spaciousness of the exercise area. I have been helped in my recovery from hip replacement surgery which occurred one year ago by joining Thrive who assigned me to Jari Haile. Jari turned out to be a wonderful Physical Therapist and with he advce I have now reached a stage of full recovery. I feel stronger than I did before the surgery and I am back to two hours of running a day and planning my next race. I went to Thrive right after I had broken my right wrist. which is also my writing hand. I saw Tamar who worked with me over the past few months, and because of her my recovery time was expedited! She worked on my entire arm for almost the whole appointment every time, rather than just focusing on exercise moves that I could do on my own. It was clear Tamar really understood the physiology of what she was doing. She applied techniques to my entire arm, rather than just focusing on my injured wrist, in order relieve the stiffness and tension the resulted from the injury. Not only is Tamar warm and lovely to be around, but really listens to your needs. Also, the office is very considerate and would often squeezed me in for early morning appointments! Twice now the good folks at Thrive have facilitated and excelerated my recoveries from knuckle-headed injuries. The first, a lower back problem from a series of snowboarding accidents and getting old was a long recovery with months of work and motivation faithfully doled-out by a therapist with over 13 years experience. He could tell exactly how much of my homework I'd done just by watching how i walked. When I was done, not only did the staff work with my evil insurance company to get me reimbursed, but i was in better core-condition that ever. The second experience was rehab after knee surgery. I went from being completely unable to move my left leg to fully walking within a week--all thanks to Tamar (and Chris). They are the best in the city. I was very disappointed. I had two sessions with Thrive for pelvic functional disorder. I was told I needed to rent a special machine that I would have to use at home as part of therapy. The PT said they would order the machine for me from their supplier. They never did - I called them and the supplier as well and they basically hadn't gotten around to it - even after a whole month had passed after my last service. I am a long time runner who is often injured. I have been to a number of physical therapists in NYC over the last 20+ years and I finally found the BEST PT place in the city. It is Thrive. I had a herniated disc in my L5/S1 and had two epidural shots at Hospital for Special Surgery by Dr. Robert Griffin (who I also recommend). I then found Thrive (it was on the recommended list of PT's from HSS). I met with Tamar and Amy. They were both great. They were knowledgeable, they cared and they spent the entire hour focused on helping me. I spent 4 solid months of stretching, exercise and strengthening under the care of Tamar and Amy. Their program helped me and I feel comfort knowing that when I get injured again (I always do), I will no longer have to research Physical Therapists. I know where to go! read more
