I cannot comment on the skill of this Doctor at all but I can say...I submitted a request for a virtual consultation as described on his website. I sent a request from said website. I never heard back from anyone. I called today and was told he does not do these consultations anymore now that the covid restrictions have been lifted. Someone needs to change the website and stop the false advertising. I live in NJ and can bearly walk so a in person visit is out of the question. I am a senior and all alone so.....Who do you believe or trust these days....not sure our medical system is in a sad state of affairs. read more

I was referred to a DO Dr. Varlotta from this office who put me through the most painful experience of my life, with absolutely no positive results. Furthermore, the procedure and practitioner overcharged and is not approved by medicare not insurance. I would find another office to trust you health and well being with. read more

Two years ago, Dr. Stieber performed an artificial disc replacement (ADR) in my C5-C6, and basically gave me my life back. I had been living with increasing pain from a herniated disc that at one point was so bad I thought I'd never work again, let alone watch a movie in a theatre or sit in a plane long enough to take a real vacation. I was on disability from work a couple of times, and had gotten to the point where I thought I was just one of those people destined to take opiates and watch daytime TV for the rest of my life with bad gray roots coming in. At the time, the ADR surgery was pretty new, so we considered a fusion briefly, but I was concerned about loss of mobility. I am so glad I selected this surgery and this surgeon! Dr. Stieber is exceedingly competent but he's also NICE and he cares about his patients as people. For my surgery (performed at NYU), he brought in a fabulous anesthesia specialist who seriously listened to me regarding my tendency to become quiet nauseous with general anesthesia and doubled up on the anti-emetic as a result. I was back at work in just 10 DAYS after the surgery, an amazing feat in my opinion, as I am part of a Facebook group of people who had the same or similar issues and surgeries. I had one of the absolute best experiences of anyone in that group. In fact, my mobility after the surgery is better than it had been in years. I am just so impressed and grateful, and every time i bang my head at karaoke, I think how lucky I am to have had Dr. Stieber as my surgeon. THANK YOU! Also, his office team is great too! read more

Well the Dr had my last review removed says it was not first hand well he still has not corrected MY paper work after I called and emailed them, He is still billing the wrong insurance company so how is this not first hand yelp. I recently (12 weeks ago) had Dr. Stieber perform a two level total disc replacement in my cervical spine (c5/6, c6/7) with mobi-c. I was experiencing significant pain and muscle weakness from left sided radiculopathy. I am an active weightlifter and was concerned about permanent nerve damage and strength loss. Going through with this surgery was one of the best decisions I have ever made. 12 weeks after surgery I'm near completely at full strength with no remaining symptoms. Was really impressed with my experience with Dr Stieber. Too often surgeons recommend surgery as an immediate fix to a problem, but he is the opposite. I became his patient due to chance when I ruptured a disk and was in extreme pain. He was the surgeon who conducted my surgery with barely any scar and immediate relief of the pain. Also, he has great bedside manner and actual personality so it's easy to speak with him openly. A few months after surgery I had another issue in my back which had me freaking out - I thought I needed surgery again and my wedding was only 5 weeks away. Dr Stieber saw me immediately, helped assess the issue, and assured me I wouldn't need surgery again. How often does a surgeon tell you that you don't need surgery? His office staff is very professional but friendly and on their A Game which I also appreciate. They reflect him as a physician. The only reason why I would consider knocking off a star is because appointments last about 2 minutes maximum, but unfortunately that seems to be the way of the world nowadays. read more

Dr. Stieber is incredible! I was in an insane amount of pain in my leg due to the largest herniated disc Dr. Steiber had ever seen. He assured me that the surgery was minimally invasive and while there were risks--as there always are with surgery--that it was not a difficult procedure for him to perform. "I do about 80 of these every year," he said. That immediately put me at ease. I woke up from surgery pain-free and walked up the five flights of stairs to my apartment without any difficulty. People were amazed I returned to work so quickly and was walking as if I'd never had a back problem. His staff is also fabulous. They took care of all the icky insurance details before I even left the office and are both friendly and professional--answering all my questions and listening to my concerns. I recently underwent a C5-6 Total Disc Replacement Surgery with Dr. Stieber and his medical team at OrthoManhattan & NYU Langone, and I **highly** recommend entrusting this team with your care. From end-to-end, the experience has been the best it could have been. Everyone I've come into contact with in his office and during the surgery has been highly competent, caring, efficient, thorough, and professional. They've gone above and beyond to meet my needs, physical and paperwork wise. Dr. Stieber quickly won my trust and the trust of my family & friends, which is critical during these experiences. I had experienced a sudden onset of neck, shoulder and arm pain (an old yoga injury that crept up) that left me bedridden. My friend referred me to Dr.Stieber and his office was able to slot me quickly in for an appointment. From my friend's past experience and from my first interaction, I felt comfortable that Dr. Stieber has a conservative approach to treatment and does not like to rush into surgery. After receiving my MRI results, we confirmed it was a very severe disc rupture and there was high likelihood of surgery. I also had a doctor from HSS and medical friend review, and they supported Dr. Stieber's assessment. When the pain got suddenly even worse, I got a hold of Dr. Stieber directly who arranged my immediate admission into NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital and booked the surgery the very next day while accommodating my mother being able to fly in. The NYU Langone care was beyond my expectations - nurses, anesthesiologists, nerve experts, transport services, food services, physicians, etc. The surgery went very well. I was again walking the day of the surgery, my scar is healing beautifully, and I am back to work after 2 weeks. I'm actually pretty shocked to read so many positive results for Dr. Stieber. Not because I found him to be a terrible doctor--I'm sure he's a brilliant orthopedic surgeon--but because I feel that, after two visits to the office, I still can't make an accurate judgement call. Between the two visits, Dr. Stieber probably spent a maximum of 35 seconds diagnosing, explaining my condition, and recommending the appropriate course of action. After reading all of these reviews highlighting his clinical empathy and ability to make patients feel at ease, I am forced to think either that 1) this 'caring' kicks in once you become a surgical patient, 2) that he's done this so many times that he is simply on autopilot at this point, or that 3) some outward characteristic(s) of mine led him to believe that I was uninterested in or incapable of understanding an explanation of my injury. So ultimately, if you are searching for an accomplished orthopedic surgeon in NYC, I'm sure he's great. But if it is important to you that your doctor is also someone who manages to empower you about what is most likely a condition or injury that causes substantial stress and discomfort in your life, he is, in my opinion, not the one. read more

Dr. Stieber saved my back and ended my leg pain. I have had an L5-S1 disk hernia for a couple of years and it was being treated by PT for that amount of time. A few weeks ago the PT started to become less effective. Then on Sunday night all hell broke in my back. I couldn't stand, I couldn't sit, I couldn't lie down. I could only lie down face forward. I was on all sorts of drugs for the pain. dilaudid was the only one that had any impact. I went to Dr. Stieber's office at St. Lukes Roosevelt and he had me admitted. I had an MRI within a couple of hours, and we scheduled the procedure for the next afternoon. Dr. Stieber performed the procedure flawlessly, painlessly, and with extreme precision. I was out of the OR and in recovery within two hours, by about 6:00pm that night. I was able to stand and walk that night. By 9:00pm I was back in my room, and I hadn't felt as good in two years. Over a month ago Dr. Stieber operated on my back. He is simply amazing. And the brilliant care is reflected in his entire office staff. They are professional and caring in ways I had not experienced before. From the way they handle patients in the office to their quick responses to phone calls, they made me feel that my recovery was truly important to them. I had been suffering from sciatica for 2 years when I went to see Dr. Stieber. Surgery was my last resort and I was very frightened about having any procedure on my back. Dr. Stieber's website with its simple instructional videos calmed my fears. But it was Dr. Stieber's clear and kind way of explaining what he would do that ultimately put me at ease. Jonathan Stieber, spinal surgeon: at least 5 stars. My husand had a MIS laminectomy five days ago. So far we are very optimistic. The pre op pain miraculously is ALL GONE. He still has weakness in one leg but it's already improving. My husband had suffered for years, literally, pain, spasms, and major loss of mobility. He had been in accidents at different times in his life and he is big. Only his hip and foot were orig. affected but health insurance made us wait and wait, to try riduculous required nonsense until spinal areas became degenerative in places. I have never felt the need to write a followup review but in Dr. Stiebers case, I have to. He is an amazing doctor, he gives as much time as you need during appts, gives you honest clear information and in general you makes you feel as though he really does care about your well being, which I honestly believe he really does care how his patients feel. I have also had the chance to speak to other doctors in NYC (I work around a lot of Doctors) and he is highly regarded among his peers, they all say they would go to him if they needed a spine guy, that tells you a lot. I can not say enough positive things about Dr. Stieber. In today's world were you are lucky to get 5 mins with a doctor, Dr. Stieber is a refreshing change. His office staff is also amazing, surprised to read a review saying otherwise. Both Jen and Nancy have been kind, helpful and have gone above what is required of them. Dr Stieber is very warm, caring, thorough, and conservative, and if he believes he can cure the problem without surgery, he will try to do so. I had fractured C2 and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I was in a neck brace. One doctor said he would have to fuse C1 / C2 which would have resulted in loss of 60% of my head's left-right rotation. When Dr. Stieber reviewed the CT scan, he felt the fracture could heal well without surgery. Over the next 12 weeks he was very thorough in my followup visits, testing for neurological damage and taking additional films and carefully reviewing them to watch for potential problems. After 3 months he said the fracture had healed enough to remove the neck brace, and he seemed genuinely pleased to have been able to let me avoid surgery, even though that's his business. I saw Dr. Stieber for a herniated L5-S1 disc and he is nothing but respectful, thorough, confident, and empathetic. I was desperate at the time when I started feeling symptoms in my leg but his caring office staff was able to accommodate me that day on short notice. He took the time to teach me in layman's terms what was going on, discussed my options including both conservative treatments and surgery, had enormous amount of patience to speak with my worried family, and continued to follow up with my progress and recovery after surgery. He looks beyond the disc herniation itself and considers the whole person- asking me how my symptoms affected my job, my active lifestyle, and daily activities.
