I am writing this to mention how happy and safe I feel at Symbio, particularly in the care of Stavros Vouyiouklis. I had arthroscopic knee surgery in November 2018 followed by a very invasive knee surgery in April 2019 and have been in recovery with Stavros the whole time. He has shown me how to take care of my knee as well as the rest of my body which had been affected from the trauma of post-op. He is so passionate about the livelihood and comfort of his patients. I feel so fortunate to be in the hands of such a knowledgeable, critical thinker. My neck is a mess. A couple of years ago, after 2 decades of competitive Judo and weight lifting, my neck started acting up (quite understandable). When the discomfort started having an impact in my day-to-day life, I decided to have it checked. Luckily, there was no structural damage, or any sign of osteoarthritis (yet). However, since the diagnosis was inconclusive, I was never given specific instructions on how to improve my condition. I was labeled with "muscle stiffness", and sent to PT for a few weeks. Although I was under the care of a couple of different PT studios, it didn't go well. I did get a lot of neck massages (which I thoroughly enjoyed, I must say), but not much more than basic static stretching, and very few instructions on what to do on my own. I'm a fitness professional and an educator, so I know the importance of doing my PT homework, and was surprised that I was never given any direction on how to help improve my condition on my own. I was treated with superficiality, and quite frankly had the impression that those PTs wanted to stretch my condition (and the copay) as long as they could. Needless to say, when I realized that I wasn't improving, I discontinued my relationship with them. The problem didn't go away, though, so my search for a better PT care continued. When I heard about the brand new Symbio Physiotherapy, I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. Under the care of Chad Woodard, my discomfort immediately started to improve. His whole body/mind approach was perfect for me, and I always felt that I was followed 1-on-1, which is very rare in today's PT studios... where you get checked for a couple of minutes every now and then. To my purposes, his work was nothing short of spectacular. I was shown exercises that were very different than the few I was previously given. Because of my profession, I could tell that his expertise was on a different level than the PTs I tried before him. One thing I particularly appreciated about Chad is his educational background, and his commitment to show you the way to continue to improve on your own. Chad doesn't work to keep you dependent on his care, but rather wants to do everything he can for you to improve as soon as possible... and always with a refreshing sense of humor. I've had an amazing experience here over the past year and working with Mike is truly awesome! Before finding Symbio PT, I only used physical therapy for any pain issues that came up periodically. As a musician and runner, I found myself transformed with their help through working out any occupational stress of playing/performing and optimizing so many areas of my running and working out. I love our sessions here because Mike is incredibly easy to talk to with your concerns and goals. At the beginning, I brought them plenty of neck, shoulder/back, and foot issues that were unpredictably intermittent. Joe Turcic is by far the best PT I've been to. I've had 3 shoulder surgeries, so I've been to a lot of PTs. Couldn't recommend Joe enough, he really takes the time to understand what the problem is, and because he is constantly learning new techniques and going to seminars, he always knows how to help. I started seeing Joe because I had a lot of neck problems this year. Before I saw Joe I had been to 4 other PTs and 2 acupuncturists who were not able to help me. Joe got me better quickly. I've been seeing Veronica at Symbio for months, and not because I'm not feeling any better, but because I do serious exercise 5 - 7 days a week and love having someone I trust to go to whenever I think something is off with my body. I'm an aerialist, and am in the air almost every day when I'm not resting. When I was checking out PT places, I wanted to make sure that whoever I was seeing would understand what I was talking about, and that they understood I was never going to rest unless I broke something. And that's where Symbio and Veronica came in! I found them based on some of Symbio's past work, and chose Veronica for her FRCms (it's a certification in functional mobility) and her background in dance. It should be obvious by the stars, but I haven't been disappointed. I originally came in for my stiff shoulders, which isn't exactly an injury, but it was my own personal nemesis. I couldn't raise my arms straight above my head without seriously arching my back. And bridges, a common warmup for more advanced aerial classes, were out of the question. I came in feeling a bit ridiculous because I wasn't hurt, but Veronica took me seriously and we worked on my end range shoulder mobility - I can now do bridges in warmup with everyone else, and I no longer get so frustrated with myself that I cry. I've since been going in for other random injuries, such as a sustained muscle overload in my forearm, a compressed back muscle, and a very tight hip. It's so rewarding to come to someone who knows how to get to the bottom of a problem, and then know how to fix it. Also, shout out to the entire front desk crew for being amazing and lovely. I'm not sure if they use a trick or if they're really that great, but after the first day I have never had to introduce myself or 'check in' because they know who I am. Today, I went in for a evaluation and ended up getting a full on one-on-one appointment. Veronica was amazing- within the first 15mins of the appointment, she figured out what was going on. I have knee pain that comes and goes, so I wanted to know what was causing it. She observed the way I walk, my sneakers, stretched me in all different ways and I learned so much. If one stretch wasn't working, she'd come up with an alternative right away. No minute was wasted. Josh is the best of all of the PTs I've ever worked with (and I have worked with a lot). I have chronic neck pain - worst on the left, which was further aggravated by breastfeeding. I have tension in the neck shoulder area; he uses the graston tool and manual therapy to help release those tensions that I wouldn't be able to release myself. I remember thinking, in my first session as he worked my leather hard and tense neck and shoulder muscles, "Wow, he is really strong!" Every session, I feel like I get a little bit better. The exercises he gives me really do help me manage my pain. Josh is so positive and friendly, I admire how deeply devoted he is to his patients. I should mention that each session was one-on-one attention for 45 min. I really appreciate this, and think that the treatment that I get at SymbioPT is so much better than being strapped to an ultrasound machine. Unfortunately, my insurance does not have out-of-network coverage, so I pay out-of-pocket, $75/session, which was some sort of special they had at the beginning of the year. I went to Chad and his very capable team for rehab on a painful shoulder injury. They always took their time with me and were very hands-on in the work they did with me. Unlike many of the PT offices around New York City, they give you one-on-one time, a full 45-50 minute session, and they are engaged. They're also just an amazing group of caring and compassionate P.T.s Lisa makes the entire registration and scheduling process easy and painless and she does it with the most pleasant disposition. I had sworn off physical therapy before deciding to go to Symbio PT. For the last two years, I have seen 3 different PTs, several different physiatrists, doctors and spine specialists to deal with a lower back injury (and re-injury). Weary from seeing all the professionals, I then decided to try an online program to "rehab myself." A case of tendinitis in the right thumb finally tipped me over the edge. I realized whatever "plan" I had been doing up until that point really wasn't working - I still had pain (almost every day) and I really missed weightlifting and Crossfit workouts. I know Dr. Joe Turcic outside of Symbio PT. I know he is an athlete and a passionate lifter. That was key for me - to work with someone who could understand that not only do I want to be pain-free but that I also want to weight lift and be fully active again. From my first visit with Dr. Joe, I learned to regain a trust for PTs again. His assessment was unlike any other I had ever received before. He was thorough, yes. But, more importantly, he looked at WHY I was feeling pain rather than merely focusing on where I was feeling pain in my body. Dr. Joe explained that is the philosophy of SymbioPT. He would ask his colleagues for their input, and I also know he continues to expand his breadth of knowledge, which he brings right back to his treatments. What sticks with me is when Dr. Joe said: "we're creating a plan to get you back to lifting". Being a goal minded person, that is powerful to me. It's not vague, but attainable and empowering. I have been following PT Chad Woodard around since 2010. I am a dancer, and first met him after dealing with 10+ years of rotator cuff wear and tear and finally needing a cortisone shot. Chad helped me not only regain tons of strength, range of motion and ability, but he also imparted so much of his wealth of knowledge to me so that I could really take care of myself and continue to improve. I'm glad to say that I have been able to continue dancing, and my should doesn't hold me back. I've also been able to do all sorts of other related activities- gymnastics, pole dancing, aerial dance, puppetry and light weight training. Recently I saw Chad at for a neck issue this fall. We set a goal of working through the issue in 8 weeks or so. Chad worked his magic and I was good to go after only 4 weeks. Chad is always personable, positive, and highly educational, all while working with the client's economic needs in mind. Chad Woodard at Symbio Physiotherapy was recommended to me as a personal trainer who could integrate strength training into my recreational running, which had become stale and plagued by injuries, cramps, and age. After five months of hard workouts under Chad's watchful supervision, I can say that the results have been beyond amazing! Within two months my endurance and speed increased. I began to run cramp-free. I ran a comeback marathon (first since 2012), took second place in my age division, and qualified handily for next year's Boston Marathon. I've become competitive at all distances, recently running a fastest 5K race in 14 years. Symbio is a god send. Scratch that. Andrew Eisen, in the Broad St. location, is a miracle worker. I plan on giving him my first born. For the past 10 years, I've had on and off issues with my lower back. I'd "throw" it out here and there working out at the gym, lifting things and later by doing simple things in life like sneezing - yes, sneezing. It was the same story: I'd do something, feel a pull or tweak, then over the course of 12-24 hours my lower back would tighten up, be in pain and spasm. Sometimes it would be difficult walking. Then, usually within 1-2 weeks, things would go back to normal. I went to a horrible doctor 10 years ago the first time this happened, and he said, "You probably just pulled a muscle. Nothing you can do but rest and wait." So that became my routine as it happened over the years (and more frequently in 30's). I wouldn't worry about it much, just noticed it happening way more frequently even when I did everything the internet said to strengthen my core and lower back (not to mention I had begun lowering weight on everything over the years at the gym). You get used to this stuff, and, over time, accept it as the norm. That was until April. In April, from the most ridiculously light weight, I did my usual "pull." This time though, something felt a bit more off. I've had instances in the past where it was hard to walk, but, this time, I couldn't even do that for a few days. When I finally starting walking, I could barely raise my right leg and found myself limping slowly, my muscles were constantly spasming and I was unable to lay down or sit without pain. Being the stubborn person I am, I waited for 4 weeks before doing anything about it until finally a friend told me about Symbio. I did some research and found that Andrew was the go to back guy and made an appointment. I went in skeptical. I expected Andrew to be the usually PT or doctor. You know, listen to me for 2 mins, cut me off, then magically know what was wrong with me. That was not the case. My first appt Andrew spent about 30 mins talking to me to understand my full history, the various injuries and existing symptoms. The rest of the time he had me to certain movements then walk. I was in bad bad shape. When I told him I had no interest in going to a doctor (let alone even contemplate surgery), he told me that he would only give it 3 weeks to improve. If it didn't, he wasn't giving me an option. We started therapy that same week, and I saw Andrew twice a week for months. He focused solely on the root cause. For the first time in my life, I understood what was happening, why it was happening and how to strengthen the areas that needed it. Turns out, I had probably herniated discs multiple times in the past as I seemed to have some nerve stuff going on in conjunction with complete atrophy of my multifidus muscles. I didn't even know what the hell that was before seeing Andrew. Andrew's approach was slow, steady and conservative. I needed to show improvement before he would advance me to new things. He was thorough and holistic. He kept up with the daily exercises he assigned to me and tweaked them over time (I still do them everyday). He also banned me from the gym, running and other things until I was truly ready to them. Here we are 6 months later (no surgery), and I'm back to normal. I'm at the gym (still building weight back up and will probably avoid ever going back to anything too heavy), more flexible and haven't had another occurrence with my back. After about 3 months of twice a week, Andrew weaned me down to 1, and now I'm seeing him once a month for a few months until that changes to every six months. Andrew's approach was to understand my body, my injuries and the root cause. He took his time and taught me to be patient with myself and to be dedicated to long term recovery. His goals was to get me back to normal life and not keep me as a lifelong patience (I'll see him twice a year to check in on my back after all is said and done). My core is strong, I do my exercises daily and this multifidus (lol) is solid. I recognize this review is detailed and lengthy. However, I wouldn't being doing Andrew or Symbio justice if I just said a few words. It's the first time in over a decade I feel like I have control of my body back. I know what to do, how to stay strong and what things to avoid. I would never have had this had I not saw Andrew. It truly was life changing for me. I won three sessions with the RedCord in a fundraiser and I have to say it was actually a lot of fun and a great work out! Mollie is the one who does RedCord - using all types of red bungee cords to help work out different parts of the body and she was great. So laid back and relaxing as much as a real workout. She's great because she asks great questions to get where you're coming from and helps you as needed. Because I didn't really know what to expect she started me off with the basics and by the end of the third session she had me doing all types of things. (I loved the "Superman" move LOL) She was excellent at recognizing if I was doing something wrong and tell me why plus notice patterns of I was being too hard on my left side or favoring my right. Then she would assist correcting me until I got it. The best was that she always ended by doing a neck exercise because I slept funky the night before my first session and almost instantly made a huge difference. I would definitely look into going back but the sessions are a bit pricy for me to do regularly. The thing is it's such a unique type of workout it's kinda justified. So I cannot recommend high enough Mollie with RedCord or any of the professional staff at Symbio. Their work is amazing. read more

I was recommended by a friend to visit Symbio PT to do an analysis on a sport injury. The physical therapist there who examined me was Dr. Thomas Mui. He did a very thorough evaluation which initiated with discussing my typical activities to analyzing a series of physical range of motions. Dr. Mui was very clear in explaining his evaluation of the injury and his recommendations for treatment. He was able to easily get to the tight muscle areas and helped release the tension. By the end of the session, I was relieved of the pain and constant discomfort that was interfering with my daily activities for weeks. I highly recommend Dr Mui. read more

Symbio Physiotherapy was fantastic in every way. Once I finally got prescribed physical therapy with approval from my insurance company, Symbio was able to get me in right away for a consultation with Karan Datta. They have a decent number of appointments outside normal office hours, including the coveted 7 AM time slot. The gym is super clean, and the individual appointment rooms are very nice, too. My first appointment consisted of an overall evaluation of what was happening with my body so we could plan the approach to fixing it. As we went through appointments, Karan was very attentive to any changes in the pain and how to proceed. Each appointment was a one-on-one session lasting 45 minutes. By the end of the PT, I felt better than ever, and I have an exercise plan to keep me pain-free going forward. Even though my knee was the primary reason for the physical therapy, my chronic back pain from an old injury subsided, which was a welcome bonus. Everyone at the office was a pleasure to work with, including the therapists, the front desk (shout-out to Evan for smiling at 7 am), and the billing department (thanks to Nick for clearing up some insurance questions for me). I really enjoyed my session with Dr. Mike. I came to him to help fix the muscle imbalances that I've had for a couple years after hurting my ankle. He was able to find some of my imbalances and helped relax some really tight muscles that I didn't know about. The last 15 minutes of the session was dedicated to showing me the exercises I should do at home to target the weak muscles. I highly recommend coming to Symbio for any physical therapy that you need. The only downside that I could think of was that the session went by so quickly. I have had the best, life-changing experience as a result of Symbio Physical Therapy. I have always been an extremely physically active person and when I injured my shoulder sliding into third base Sep 2015 I knew I could treat it myself like I had all other injuries. Wrong. Over the following two years I graduated from one-off PT sessions elsewhere, cortizone injections, two PRP injections, with much at-home or at-gym rehab exercises on my own to no avail-- I reinjured my shoulder again and again and again. When I finally came to Symbio after reading the great Yelp reviews I felt hopeless. I saw Mike Oakes and the progress I have achieved under his care has been remarkable. Amongst the many phenomenal qualities: - He is focused first and foremost on getting you better - period. Some PT places in the city feel completely like a money-making machine with one person monitoring 3-5 people concurrently. Here you get 1:1 care. Of course Symbio is a business- but it's one that truly puts the patient first. You feel his dedication and commitment to you from your first session - He is completely holistic in his approach. He took a much more comprehensive view on my body mechanics and the compensation that my body had developed and worked on all the root issues - He beautifully intertwines conventional PT exercises, deep-tissue massage, a bit of chiro.. Every session is different and every one has progressed me along - He gets results. This, of course, is the most important part. When I first met Mike, I couldn't sleep on my left side, couldn't walk down the street without being terrified some one would bump into me, had my gym membership lapse 7 months... now I'm back to sleeping on both sides, back at the gym slowly but surely building up mass again, feeling so much more like myself than I had the past two years I cannot recommend Mike and Symbio PT enough and now have one of my best friends from college going to see him. Symbio is easily the best PT facility in NY. I have a whole host of issues with my body that I basically just gave up on and began living with the pain as though it were normal, and after continual treatment by both Chad & Stavros I have noticed an immense change in my body and the way it feels and the way different bones and muscles interact with each other. I have significantly less pain on a daily basis, and now understand the symbiotic relationship that, for example, my neck has with my hips and my hips with my feet. I'm like a lot of people out there - too busy to make time to take care of myself and too skeptical to think anyone can really "fix" my ailments. Physical therapy was an idea, but I never thought it would do any good. If you're reading this thinking "hmm sounds familiar," please keep reading and please keep an open mind. Going in for my assessment with Tom, I was hoping for any insight since I've heard good things. We spent the first half talking. I spoke and he listened while taking notes. Then came the observation piece of the assessment followed by the hands on work. Not only did we come out with some immediate things to work on, but for the first week after spending a few minutes on my knee, those symptoms were negligible and I didn't even have to think about it all week. Great relief. I'm impressed with their thorough work and not just trying to treat to symptoms, but understand its source to address and prevent for the future. Chad and Tom at Symbio are awesome. They got me back to running after two different injuries. A reoccurring ankle injury where Chad predicted it was due to bad running form. He was correct and worked with me on a proper running form because he's a runner himself. Chad and Tom worked with me through another injury, high hamstring tendinopathy. This injury could have lasted a lot longer had Chad and Tom not diagnosed it early on, for that I'm grateful. And I'm back to running and training for my next marathon. Thanks so much. read more

Not only is Chad a great guy, he's also a terrific physical therapist. I've been in and out of PT for years for various issues, and working with Chad was the first time someone actually put all the pieces together and treated me from A to Z. When I injured my knee 3 weeks before a big bike ride from Boston to NY, I thought I'd have to pull out. But Chad probed and prodded and fixed me up like new in time to still ride. I've needed physical therapy in the past but this has been a totally different experience. Symbio Physiotherapy's approach to physical therapy is focused on the patient getting one on one individualized treatment for the entire appointment. They don't leave you alone in a room for heat or cold therapy (which can honestly be done at home) or leave you to your own devices as you exercise. You feel like you are in a true partnership with your therapist. Michael Oakes has been a Godsend. I'm not athletic (to be honest, I'm out of shape & overweight) and I am middle aged so I thought I needed to resign myself to the daily pain and limitations of "old age". Michael has helped bring me back to a level of wellness that frees me to function without pain! For the first time in a long time, I believe I will be able to get back into shape. As a very active individual who grew up playing multiple contact sports and endured many injuries throughout the years I highly recommed the symbio Physical therapy team and in particular Dr. Joe Turcic. I am a personal trainer and a massage therapist myself who has suffered from chronic back tightness and shoulder pain for the past few years. After visiting many therapists and doctors over the years and seeing little to no results I had given up and just learned to live with the pain. I started getting treated at symbio PT about 3 months ago and this week for the first time in years I feel pain free and functional. I attribute my current pain free status to a mixture of PT sessions and attending the Kin stretch classes they offer at symbio PT.
