Our flight was delayed into Providence and we talked to their customer service rep that said the employees would track our flight and be open when we landed since it's past their opened hours. We landed and no one is at the counter to help us to get a car. We're now stranded here just like other customers that had reservations are. Their automated system even says that they track your flight and stay two hours after your flight which is false. read more

Rented a vehicle on-line - declined all roadside assistance and insurance and have the on-line receipt to prove it, however when the vehicle was picked up at the counter, the counter person apparently added in these fees (they work on commission). Horrible - ended up paying nearly $500 for four days to rent a cheap sedan for just over 100 miles. They also upped my mileage by over 100 miles - document and check everything along the way! read more

I received a car with no working headlights (undriveable at night) and was leaking oil the whole trip to the point where I had to buy oil and constantly refill in order to make it back. Rental June 3-7 out of Tampa airport. The rudest counter people and manager I have ever encountered. I rental a managers choice CAR. He made me take a truck a four door Colorado because that was his choice and I was told all of the cars were gone. I guess he doesn't understand the difference between a car and a truck. So I get to the truck it is all scratched and dinged up. Also I am all of 5' and this thing has not running boards and I can bear,y get into it. I saw the manager downstairs in the garage and ask again and again because I can hardly get into the truck, he doesn't care and tells me to see the guy at the booth who will do the walk around for all the dings and scratches. We thank heavens for the wonderful man working the booth. I explained about the walk around and he looked at my rental contract and asked why I had the truck after he saw me struggled to be able to enter the vehicle. I explained to him what I was told from the manager and told me there were p,entry of car and did I want to switch. He got a big yes please from me and told me to pull over by section 3 park the truck and pick any car. By this time, an hour later, at 7:30pm we were so exhausted and I was never so glad to finally get into my Nisan Versa and start towards our hotel. When my mother died, my husband and I wanted to make sure that my young adult, niece and nephew would be able to attend their grandmother's funeral in North Carolina - so we decided we would drive from Rhode Island to make sure that happened. I made a reservation with Thrifty - asking to pick the car up at 9pm. We requested a car large enough for 4 and was told a midsize would be suitable. The only car available when we arrived was completely unacceptable. Cramped, uncomfortable and small. When I asked about making other arrangements with Thrifty. I was told that because there was the one car still available in my category, there was nothing they could do. They pointed out that it was late and all the other cars had been taken. I pointed out that I had reserved for that hour AND there were 5 other car rental companies at the next counters and if there was nothing Thrifty could do, I would simply have to void our contract and rent from another company. They said there was nothing they WOULD do. This was after asking the women at the counter to call a manager. I walked 10 steps to the Budget counter and got a car that was exactly what I had asked for from Thrifty - for the same price. Thrifty, you had other cars available and yet you made an awful situation worse. Thank goodness there are other companies that do what you do, far more efficiently and much better. Disgraceful, they left my handicapped mother at the airport after she refused to get on the shuttle after the driver named Kevin yelled at her in front of everyone. I called Thrify headquarters and they never called her back. She had to pay for an uber to go to another rental place to find a car where she had to pay almost $100 more for a last minute rental. This was the first time she had a problem with Thrify and from the service, it will be the last time she uses their services. read more

Car rental went fine. Two weeks later received a bill from a credit collection agency that Thrifty uses to collect tolls. They assessed multiple $15 "courtesy administrative fees" on $4 tolls. They do not offer a pre-pay on tolls and they do not offer a toll pass to rent -- even though most tolls roads no longer offer a cash option. When I called to inquire, they read me the contract info: buried on page 4 they say that in states that require them to offer toll passes to rent, they do so and on page 4 they state that in states that do not require it, they charge the $15 fee. When I asked the customer service agent, "so basically, buried in the fine print, you're saying that in states that allow us to gouge you, we will." She answered "yes." But when the guy at the counter tells me that $45 gas refill will SAVE me money, and then I fill the entire tank for $30, I know I am lied to. Not being helpful, looking out for your company or other such items are to be expected. But stating a fact as if it is in my favor and have it go that much the other way is blatant lying. Unacceptable. Later I needed to add another day and was charged $120. RE YOU KIDDING?? I am a customer, not your enemy. Thrifty has never been my favorite rental car place because of issues in the past but because they offered the best deal on hotwire, I decided that it couldn't hurt to give them another go. I do my standard thing of flying into the airport and grabbing a car and while I'm there pick up a GPS machine. Of all the car rental stands, this was the only one with the line. I don't believe it's because they're the most popular because I see other people going to the other stands, but they are in and out so quickly. Our service agent not only looked grumpy and exhausted but gave attitude all the way through the transaction. I'm just picking up my car! I received a GPS machine that when I started driving away realized did not work. First it wouldn't find my destination and then didnt have signal. I've used these before but this one was crap and since I was half way to my destination (luckily I had travelled the road before) I decided to just hold onto it and see if the service agent would be able to help me out. Alas, no. The service agent asked me if I had turned the machine on.... Don't you hate it when people do that? That's after I prefaced that I tried punching in my destination and stating that I have used these before!! At least she was nice enough to say that she would make a note that would essentially take the cost of the GPS off my bill. Inconvenient that I had to go through all of that but at least I didn't have to pay for that junk (you get 1 star for that). Also, they require a receipt for the purchase of gas within 10 miles of the airport. I have used many other companies before but this is a first. While I think this ensures that the tank is filled close by, it is a real inconvenience to the customer. I already don't know the area and then I have to somehow measure 10 miles to the airport especially with a car whos gps does not function. Really, next time, I'll pay the couple extra dollars to go to Alamo, Hertz, Enterprise etc. Not worth my time and sanity to deal with this company. read more

Let me say that the local employees were great all around, enough can't be said about how they treated me and handled my "situation." But someone rear-ended the car I was renting and now some bozos at dtag.com are harassing me to pay them extra money on behalf of Thrifty, instead of collecting from the insurance company of the at-fault individual. I just spoke with my insurance agent who confirmed that Thrifty is known for these types of malarkey - so is Dollar. I will not be giving them my business in the future. Further, State Farm (my insurance company) notified me that they paid over 3k on my behalf (including my deductible), without bothering me (even though there is absolutely no question that the other driver was at fault) just to keep Thrifty off of my back. They also advised me that they have an agreement in place with Enterprise and Hertz so that State Farm customers never pay charges of this type, or even get bothered in the first place. I will be renting from both of these companies in the future. Lastly, the administrative fee is questionable. Talking to your customers is the cost of doing business, not an additional fee. read more

I had an AWESOME experience with Thrifty. I booked online when my car was going in for service. The gentleman at the front desk was ever so polite and VERY customer service orientated. I booked through AAA.COM and got a great deal on an SUV. The SUV they had slotted for me had a dead battery due to the frigid temps, so they upgraded me. When the mechanics were not done with my personal car, I was easily able to call Thrifty without ANY hassle and get my rental extended multiple times without an increase in cost. I was fully expecting to be gouged for extending the rental at a different rate, however they kept my rate and I had a great car for a week at an excellent price. Rented a car out of the Charleston, SC airport 9/4-8/21. There was only one person working at the counter when I got there. It took 15-20 minutes per customer and there were 8-9 people in line. When I got to the counter they had only 1 car available. Was not what I "reserved" but it was fine and I was not charged extra. When I got to the garage to get the car there were no Thrifty employees to go over the car with me. This was left to me as if I know what their standard for normal wear and tear/dings on the car are. If you had a problem you'd have to go back into the airport, 10 minute walk, only to wait in the slowest line ever again (yes. I verified it was the slowest line ever). I did take a photo of some slight scratches on the rear bumper. When I returned the car, at 7am, again no, none, zilch, nada thrifty employees in the garage. No one to assess/intake the car and review for possible damage. A week later I get a bill for $1500 for damage to the car, and guess what? They were trying to get reimbursed for the damage I had photographed when I picked up the car!!! They sent photos of damage taken 2 days after I dropped the car off, at a different location from where I dropped the car off, so it had obviously been driven by someone else, and had the nerve to think I'd pay the fraudulent claim with no questions asked? I understand the difficulties in the rental car industry but thrifty seems to be trying to use customers to make up for lost revenue. I'd have given them 0 stars if they was an option. Recently rented a car from Thrifty from the Providence RI airport. Will NEVER rent from them again, no matter how much cheaper they are than others. I am a frequent car renter, and never have I had such experience. First of all, the car had a big and obvious problem (rear view mirror not working -- no switch to turn it on -- auto sensor that controls it was broken). As I drove out of the airport, I noticed the problem immediately, but was anxious to get going and thought we'd just figure out how to turn "on" the mirror as we continued on our way and read the manual. It soon became apparent that there was no switch and that the mirror was clearly broken. We were already 1 hour outside Providence and so I figured I'd then try to exchange the car at another location. I called Thrifty. While their support staff answers the phone promptly, I was told "just use the side mirrors". Not very comforting. Then I found out that there were only 2 possible locations I could exchange it at, from Massachusetts or Maine (our destination), either Boston airport or Manchester, NH. They have no locations in Maine and all the other Massachusetts locations are franchises, separate from the airport Thrifty offices. I did not want to take hours out of our limited vacation to go return a car that was their problem. If they were a "reputable" company, I would have expected them to offer to bring an exchange car to me, give me a decent break on the cost, etc. (They did take 10% off, however, which was nice.) Still, this was a scary experience (felt hazardous), and I would not trust renting from them again. Two more things come to mind as well. We were returning the car to the Boston Airport at the end of our trip (instead of Providence) and we were never told that that location is not actually at the airport where all the other rental cars are. We drove all the way to the airport, only to be told we'd have to drive north about 3 miles back. Finally found it. Would have been nice to know this ahead of time. (Again, problem with Providence location.) We barely made it to our flight gate on time. Also, was told that you have to fill up the tank full within 10 miles of airport and show gas receipt to prove it. No other rental car company has ever requested this. read more

I made reservations weeks in advance for a car. I had a confirmation number time and date. When I went to pick up the car I reserved, I was told they did not have any cars available. They said the wait would be at least an hour or more. I went right next to the Thrifty desk to Enterprise Leasing. I received friendly service, got my car immediately and at a better price. I would have liked to have been there when they inspected the car because for some reason nobody from thrifty can explain what the charge is for. I read some of the reviews people have left and I guess I should consider myself lucky. Nothing but great customer service and a brand new car when I rented a vehicle from thrifty. I took the car with 100 miles and brought it back with quite a few!! Not once was I charged for using so many miles and knowing I had to travel trough tolls they informed me about the ez pass option. The only reason why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is due in part because of the hold they put on the card when you get there to pick up the car. If you ever rent from Thrifty be sure not to leave anything behind in your rental car because you will NEVER see it again. I left behind a pair of eyeglasses in a rental and have consistently received the run around from Thrifty personnel. They tell you to fill out a form online providing a description of the item you lost. What they don't tell you is that they never look for the item in the car you rented and there is no way to check with the location where you left the car to determine if they ever found the item. read more

I usually decline adding extras when renting, but this time it seemed reasonable to accept the EZpass add on as I was going from MA to FL with a lot of tolls on the road. Only two things they did not tell me, that the EZpass is only accepted in a few states and the quoted fee from $77 went to $127... Taxes they explaned later... Than I returned home earlier than originaly planed and returned the car early foolishly thinking that I will get some money back as I have done with other companies. NOT! In addition of not getting money back I was charged $25 early return fee!? Useless to say, I will never rent from this company again, ever! read more

This was my first time renting from Thrifty, and my last. I had to wait an unbelievably long time to pick up the car. The car itself was fine. But when I returned it with a full tank, they charged me $8.99 plus taxes on top of that, totally an extra $11.42, because I didn't print out a receipt when I got gas. They could just look at the tank to see that it was full. This was really shady. The guy who took my car back was a total jerk and told me it was in my contract that I had to print out the gas receipt. Who reads their rental car contract??? Their customer service person should have told me about this when I rented the car. I also accidentally left something important in the car and had to call no less than 8 times about it. While one of the local managers was very helpful, I still had to keep calling to follow up on it. At first, I kept getting bounced back to the 800 number, where I got transferred, put on hold and disconnected repeatedly. Most of the local people were nice, but in the end, this was an incredibly frustrating experience. read more

I went to Thrifty to rent again. I had the best Customer Service on Friday the 13th and thought I need a car for another week, why not go back I was treated very well on Friday. Upon entering today the 15th I find a man behind the counter who did not greet us in any way. We had to tell him we wanted to rent again. He claimed that they were "sold out". Then he said if you go online and they accept you you can rent a car. I asked how was that possible that we were standing there yet they were sold out but online we coud get a car? Needless to say after an hour of searching we went online and got a confirmation number through the website. Went back to the store and this time that same man was behind the desk. Again no greeting. We handed him the print out with theconfirmation number. I gave him my credit card and ID and told him as we did Friday that I was not the driver. He said we couldn't do that. We showed him the slip from Friday which shows me as the credit card holder and a second name as the driver. He practically threw the paperwork back at us and said they couldn't do that. I asked for a manager and he rudely with much disdain in his voice said he was. I am a CSM for a major Hotel chain and would fire anyone in my charge if they were to speak to any customers the way this man spoke to me. My advice to future users of Thrifty....if you like being treated like a circus act made to jump through hoops or you like being treated rudely then go to this store. read more

Arrived at airport and booked hotel on post Ed and walked next door to thrifty to pick up my confirmed car. They demanded an extra $80/ week because I just flew in. I was not flying out from providence and the site was not on airport terminal but on post rd. I told them I was staying in a hotel and as I was not renting from the airport, not taking their shuttle etc it should not be extra.. Very rude and not accommodating. I just rented a prepaid car rental with Thrifty at the Mobile, Al airport. Done through Expedia. When we arrived late Tuesday night there were people in line and things were not moving. Turns out people were cancelling as they did not have the vehicles people had booked. We were stuck as it was prepaid plus we had been flying all day. So we went with the smaller vehicle. She offered I could go to another airport in Florida to see if they had another vehicle. Which we declined to do. The car worked out even though it was on the smaller side. Problem was when I got home and got receipt for additional charge of 106.00 to add the additional driver. When we were at the desk we asked about adding my sister (age 47) the girl said no problems and no cost. She seemed very happy we didnt cancel like everyone else. I called Thrifty about this and they said I had signed for the charge and there was nothing they could do. Expedia also called and spent 20 minutes with them and they still would not fix the problem. The cost to rent the car was only $130, the new reduced price from $150 for the smaller car. Who in the right mind is going to pay $106 to add a 2nd person when it only cost 130 to rent it. Here is how they got around it. They told Expedia I signed the agreement so I new about the charge. Here's how it worked. We gave both drivers licences to the girl and she filled the info in on the computer and they you sign a electronic signature pad for taking the car, the agreement. She folded the 13 page agreement up and put it in a folder and passed it me and said your ready to go. So when you sign the signature pad it automatically says you accept everything even though you don't get to see the agreement until after it is signed. 10:30 at night flying for 7 hrs who's going to read an agreement especially when your under the impression you were not adding anything to the bill. The girl was very smart in how she did it because I asked about the returning time was before they opened and she showed me the slot to drop the keys. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!! I learned just pitiful customer service could be. They do not make customer service convient for the customer in the least as long as they are getting paid. I am disgusted by my experience. I rented a car through Thrifty to be picked up in Jacksonville, FL. As we were going through the paperwork I told the guy specifically that I was completely covered with insurance so I did not need any at all. Well he snuck insurance onto my car anyway & I did not notice before I signed for the car. The next day when I did notice the extra $200 on my bill I tried calling but you can only get ahold of someone here m-f 8-5 so I had to wait a day. Finally when I was able to speak with someone I explained that there was a mistake & he told me the only thing I could do was drive back to the place (an hour both ways) to sign a new paper. I told him I could not drive 2 hours on my vacation so I asked if he could do it over the phone. He told me that he would not that I called on Monday & did not want the coverage & told me I would just have to speak with a manager when I returned the car. I told him the exact day & time of my flight to ensure a manager would be available & he assured me it would not be a problem. When I get to the airport on Saturday I find that, once again, managers are only availble m-f so I had to wait another 2 days to speak with someone. When I finally did speak with someone about this whole mess I was simply told that insurance is non refundable & since I did not sign in person I would no way be refunded. I explained to this man how 1)the insurance was stuck on me without me knowing so they could scam a quick buck from me 2)I could not get ahold of anyone to even speak about this until days later & 3)instead of them working to my convience to make my experince better I was supposed to go out of my way & go the whole way back to avoid the extra $200 they took from me. I learned my lesson that Thrifty could not care less about the customer as long as they are getting paid, there are tons of other car rental companies in that airport & I can guarantee every single one of them would be better than this excuse for service I received. We needed a rental asap due to our car breaking down. The guy at this local was nice enough and so was the car. However, when we needed to extend the rental agreement, the amount given included all the insurance I had declined at the counter. All these fees and hidden charges were never explained to us nor were they in the fine print on the receipt or contract. The woman on the phone sounded like she had a mouthful of something and when we asked to speak to a manager, we were blown off. I rented a car at TF Green Airport, I was staying in CT for two days and then driving up to New Hampshire. I was told at the counter that I would need a toll pass, because New Hampshire only had electronic tolls and no option to pay cash. I ask what would happen if I did not pay the toll, I was told that I would be charged 15.00 per occurrence and then what ever the toll was. So I saw no other option then to rent the Toll Pass, at 11.99 per day x 4,, total of 47.96. I thought it was odd that I was being charged for 4 days, when CT doesn't even have tolls. But I thought I had no other choice. Image my surprise when I got to New Hampshire and found out that there was indeed a cash toll (1.00) ( rt 93 exit 11). The first time I saw the cash toll I was in the wrong lane to use it. So I used the Toll Pass. Then I started worrying that I needed to use the Toll Pass because that was what I was told. I used the pass 4 times. When I contacted Thrifty they said that they would look into it. However they say because I used the toll pass and signed a contract, they would not refund me. Yes I signed a contract because I was lied to. Do not rent from this company. I am not done trying to get refunded, I will dispute charge with credit card company, BBB etc. read more

I waiting for 20 minutes at this dirty understaffed (1) employee, location... There was only one guy in front of me and the girl took 3 people who came in after me for (airport parking or something) before waiting on me... Never signalling what was going on, or even caring/ It's called customer service & professionalism... I'm standing here with my 7 year old and now she won't accept debit cards.. Well, that's all I happened to have on me as she looked at me as if I had 3 heads.. I tried calling her manager and he didn't care at all. AVOID THRIFTY AT ALL COSTS because it will cost you more than you can imagine in hidden fees, administrative fees, fuel fees, parking fees, fees on fees, etc. We went with them because they were the cheapest when we searched and booked online, but they waited until we were in line at midnight after a delayed flight with a tired infant crying to pull a bait and switch on us. Due to hidden fees it cost us $75 more than the stated price we had booked online and the night staff assured as a manager could fix it in the morning. Well, they lied. And we were stuck. Stuck paying significantly more than we had been quoted. And it wasn't over. A month later they billed our credit card 'administrative fees' and basically said there was nothing we could do about it since we'd signed a contract to rent a car with them and 'administrative fees' were in the contract.
