This review is going to focus on a number of elements: Theater company, quality of productions and quality of stage and seating. For those that know the theater scene in Charleston, it is competitive and diverse. Threshold on Society is one of the more intimate theaters and one that has taken a number of risks over the last 5 plus seasons. This season is no exception with the new production "Of Mice and Men" starting this Thursday, January 14, 2016. In the three productions I have been able to attend and tickets for Friday, the shows have been spectacular mostly due to great content and impressive local acting talent. The theater is small, but with great sound and acoustics, the quality of the sound is outstanding. The staff from production to concessions is always so happy and appreciative. There isn't any type of elitist or snubby feel. Everyone is treated with respect and they are so glad to see you. This is truly one of the special theater companies in Charleston.

The well-cultivated set and intimate auditorium put the audience right in the diner with the cast!

Professional in every aspect! Actors were captive in their roles, set was simple but effective. Staff were extremely supportive.

General admission on the first floor including all seats and the floor is amazing ... not a bad seat in the house ... and they don't seem to oversell the shows. The Charleston Music Hall itself is a beautiful, historic venue--intimate, well-maintained, and known for hosting concerts, comedy shows, and special events. The seating is comfortable, sightlines are good, and acoustics are solid, which definitely worked in favor of the vocal performances. The singers were clearly talented and did a great job vocally--everyone sounded wonderful, and there's no denying the performers can sing. However, we personally felt that the show didn't quite feel like a full "production." It leaned heavily on straightforward singing, with limited storytelling, choreography, or theatrical elements to tie everything together. This may come down to expectations and personal preference. Growing up around Broadway shows in NYC, we're used to more dynamic, story-driven performances with larger production value, and this didn't quite meet that standard for us. While others may enjoy it for the music and holiday spirit--especially in a cozy venue like the Charleston Music Hall--we would probably not attend again, particularly considering the ticket price.

The performers seem like cool people that are probably the funniest people in the friend group and would be a blast to be around. But I didn't laugh once at this show. First, they chose someone from the audience to come up and answer questions, the answers which were meant to infiltrate the rest of the show. Which is the only reason I would come back here--maybe next time they choose a better or more interesting person? This time they chose an obnoxious drunk guy who used an Arabic slur at the end of his time. To the point one of the cast made a visibly disdainful face. And then he spent the entire hour (right behind me) guffawing at every single thing and repeating jokes over and over to himself aloud. This is a small venue. Bar is cash only. My show was only about 11 bucks, which is more than reasonable, and the only reason I am not outraged or unwilling to try again. They also have even cheaper shows and different themes.
