I saw Cabaret here for the first time last night and was astounded by the cast! They have real broadway quality actors and actresses here. The theatre is also so cozy and old timey feeling. The production of into the Woods was truly wonderful! The voices of the cast were tremendous and the production was great. The theater is historic and we enjoyed the atmosphere. It was very easy to see and hear the production even from one of the back rows. Highly recommend seeing a show or even getting season tickets if you are local. read more

Just went to a Rocky Horror Picture show and the actors were only out there for 4 songs (which they were not on time for). It costed $70 for a mediocre performance that i could have done at home. Worst Rocky horror performance I have ever seen read more

Truly an amazing little theater. I was very impressed at the production I had seen put on: Annie. Not only did the performers give an amazing show, but the direction, costumes, and lighting was amazing. I've heard that accolades were given to another more popular, richer theater in the area, but I feel like this one with its charm and heart should also be given recognition. For the show, upon entering the theater lobby, cookies were given, which, I feel, ignited childlike happiness in everyone. This was a good tone to set prior to watching the show. I hope that the Footlight's future productions are as creative and wonderful as this one, and I hope to see another one of their shows on my next visit to Charleston. read more

This Theatre sits in the center of the French Quarter on 20 Queen Street, which is super quaint with its old pedestrian foot paths that meander through historic downtown Charlestons homes dating back to the seventeenth century. Each home has cute natural gas lighted lanterns, which brings you right back to a times of our revolutionary beginnings. Arriving at 8ish after our marathon race in the morning in Kiawah Island we were looking forward to a little comedy and being seated for the first time. We only missed the first five minutes of Nuncrackers, but we didn't miss a beat, as the reverend mother, sisters and Father Virgil heralded us with a nunsensical Christmas musical for two hours. Some of the featured songs were "Twelve Days Prior to Christmas, Santa Ain't Comin' To Our House, We Three Kings of Orient Are Us, and It's Better to Give Than To Receive." The cast were semi professional singers but that didn't detract from the act at all. I lost it several times especially the skit on baking a fruit cake where Father Virgil had to pretend to be Sister Julia with one of the audience members invited on stage to get into the act. I loved all of the lessons learned too. A lighted sign of "Applause" would come on signaling audience participation was hilarious too. Very gimmicky but I liked it. Equally enjoyable and a great alternative to the Nutcracker for your Christmas spirit is this theatrical production, which is set in a wonderful location. read more

My wife and I visited the theater to see "The Addams Family Musical". The show was great and we were very entertained. The theater is small and quaint. The building is old which might be a negative to some people, however it's older historic feel adds to the theatrical experience for me. The staff was very polite and pleasant. They do have some concessions for sale (beer, soda, water, chips, popcorn, etc.). Since the show I've been checking their website for future productions that we will most assuredly attend. read more

I took my family here this weekend to go see The Lion King Jr, and we were very pleased, not only with the show, but with the historic theater and the volunteers who were running the front of house. For all of the negative reviews out there regarding the chaos and lack of order, please feel free to volunteer to help out these lovely ladies who are doing their best to bring a little culture to our corner of the world. I have signed up for the emails from Footlight and will attend future events as well. Seating was very spacious, and that's saying a lot for a tall guy like myself. Plenty of legroom. Thank you all to a wonderful performance that rivaled the Broadway version in effects, décor, and acting. read more

I really like this theatre. It has a homey, local community theatre vibe mixed with a century of history, passionate volunteers and an excellent location. I've been here twice to see two plays and enjoyed both of them, very much. The theatre is small enough that there aren't any mikes or speakers, just actors projecting from the stage, and I think this makes for an intimate environment which is conducive to theatre. The theatre is smart to have a nice snack bar and plenty of bathrooms. They give you a playbill as you walk to get seated, which is nice. I always begrudge paying for programs but here, they are included. The actors are serious and very focused on their roles. I am sure it can be grueling to walk the boards as often as they do but they have brought the passion both times I've been. I highly recommend this small, adorable theatre. read more

My dad and I recently went to see The Footlight Players perform Hitchcock's 39 Steps at the Queen St. Playhouse. It was an absolute pleasure! I was amazed at the cast of FOUR and their ability to play over 130 characters and do it so artfully. The play itself was a riot, on many occasion we were laughing out loud. It was a very fast moving play so you had to pay attention but that wasn't difficult. The theater itself is very quaint. During intermission we got lucky and got to watch a young boy, who was there to watch the show, serenade everyone on the piano. We didn't arrive early enough to get drinks before the show but they allow drinks in the theater so we ordered a couple of glasses of wine and enjoyed them during the second half of the show. I had such a good time that I tried convincing my husband to go back later that week and watch the show with me again! I look forward to returning for more shows! read more

This is a nice little theater and the performances we've been to have all been good. It's not Broadway and it's not even the Dock Street theater, so manage your expectations and you'll have a good time. Tickets are always around $22. Seats are comfy with good leg room. The stage seems a bit elevated to me, so I'd opt for further back seats than too near the front. They sell soft drinks wine and beer there and it's cool to bring it into the seating area during the performances. Fun little place - we'll be back. read more

We got last minute tickets to see Singing in the Rain. Just so happens that this is my favorite movie of all time and my family also grew up having to watch it and grew to love it like I do. Cosmo is the best character in my opinion. I used to have season tickets years ago to Footlight Players. But with tourism so cray downtown I let it go years back and take in an occasional show. Well this show was way above what I expected. The casting was spot on. IT was a full house and we were closer to the back and the acoustics were perfect and their talent was much higher than what I remember back in the day. The 4 primary characters all stepped up and put on a fabulous performance. They even had 2 rain scenes which was what put it right over the top. The lobby is small but we just hung out in front on Queen St. Very nice area. The bathrooms were clean. Of course too long a line at intermission but that is just the deal. By the end of intermission no line so it works well enough. Overall loved the experience and the location and especially the cast and anyone responsible for this performance. Well above expectations and will be looking at going back for future performances! read more

We've been here twice now and have enjoyed our experience both times. Most recently we came to see the Addams Family and it was a great experience! The seats were comfortable and there was a lot of leg room. There's a small lobby where you can purchase a few snacks and drinks (they also serve beer, wine, and alcohol). The acting we've seen is great for a community theatre. I was really impressed with the stage setup, props, and decorations for the Addams Family. We will be back! read more

Had the misfortune of attending a comedy show at this theater during the Charleston Comedy Festival in January 2012. The show was great...TJ Miller is pretty funny. However the venue was terrible. Very disorganized. Very rude staff and "volunteers". Poorly planned and executed movement of patrons from one show to another. Why in the world would you require a person to print their tickets for the show at home and then when they arrive at the theater force them to wade through a completely disorganized mob of people in order to go to the box office window to receive another ticket? Because of our treatment at this venue, we will never attend another show at the Footlight Players Theater. If you value your sanity, I suggest you avoid this place too. read more

As a review of the venue and not the productions, Id have to say this place is pretty ok. The theater is small and intimate with some cool history, but something not so cool yet obviously historic are the seats. Not the most uncomfortable things Ive sat in, but for a show that can be a couple hours, youd think they would make sure youre somewhat comfortable. The layout of the lobby is difficult to understand at all. The "bar" window is directly in front of the ladies room door and you never know exactly what line youre in! When the theater empties into the lobby its a crush of people and very difficult to move around or even find room to put your coat back on. The highlights of the venue are the great shows they put on and the beautiful Philadelphia Alley they are next to . read more

I've been living in the Low Country since 1994 and am ashamed to say that my first visit to the Footlight Players Theatre was yesterday, March 8, 2012! What a fabulous venue and performance by our local talent. The theatre itself is the perfect size. I doubt I will ever be able to go back to the Theatre of the Performing Arts in N Chas after my experience at Footlight. The actors were fabulous, as was the set decoration and wine bar! I had date night here for Lend Me A Tenor the other evening after buying my discounted tickets on the Post and Courier website. Since there is no parking, we parked in the garage by the Market for $6 or so and walked to the theatre. Located on Queen Street, this old building has kept its historical feel for this smaller ~125 seat theatre. The lobby is rather small but you can grab snacks or drinks while waiting for the doors to open. They do take credit cards for everything, and they do have ~$5 mini bottles of wine as well as bottles of beer. If you order a cocktail with liquor, you're required to buy a "$1 membership card" which you can bring back anytime the rest of the year to buy another cocktail with-this is purely because they are a non-profit. I was rather disappointed with the stage set up as it was poorly constructed and could have been much better. The show, however, was very nice and the acting was pretty standard for a community theatre. We will definitely be back this year for some of their upcoming shows, especially the musicals. read more
