Taste of Egypt Festival - Gorgeous church with amazing history

    Taste of Egypt Festival

What a wonderful way to spend the day! This local festival has been running for more than a decade…read moreand it is such a gem! Fantastic food, desserts, coffees, smoothies, juices... Tons of family activities including petting zoo, inflatables, tons of jewelry and one of a kind souvenirs from Egypt. Great music, atmosphere and wonderful people make me come back every year!

The Taste of Egypt is my favorite little festival. Friendly people, savory foods, baklava,…read moretheology, camel rides, Middle Eastern music playing in the background. What's not to like? This year I enjoyed a delicious plate of marinated, grilled chicken with pita, tzatziki, rice, salad and a mango nectar soda. I could have eaten chicken and tzatziki all day! Also available were kufta, falafel, hummus & pita, stuffed grape leaves, and macaroni bechamel. For dessert I had two of the I-don't-know-how-many variations of baklava. Homemade baklava. So delicious! We then took a tour of the church from a well-prepared and engaging guide. Though we had taken the tour once before, I learned additional facts and traditions this time. If you are interested in architecture, iconography, or comparative religions you must not miss the church tour. Be sure to grab a copy of the pamphlet 'Egypt and The Copts' in the narthex (just inside the doors) of the church. We also attended a lecture by a knowledgeable presenter on the history of Christianity in Egypt. A few of us lingered afterward to discuss (Christian) church history and theology. Students and fans of comparative religions or theology will really enjoy this lecture. It's a great refresher on the history of Christianity in general. In addition, there are books for sale in the bazaar (Nefertiti's Treasures) about Egypt and about the Coptic faith. Now if tours and lectures aren't your thing, you can skip all that and take a camel ride. Yes, a camel ride! How often can you do this in the Western Suburbs? It's quite fun! You can ride alone or with others. This is not just for the kids. Both children and adults enjoy the camel rides. This year my husband and I rode the camel together. If you'd like, you can have your photo taken while on the camel. 4x6 or 8x10. It's a great souvenir of the day. I think the Taste of Egypt is a great fest for anyone. It's very family friendly -- not only can the kids ride a camel, but there's a petting zoo, a moon jump (bouncy house kind of thing) and some creative activities -- but adults without kids (like us) have a great time too. Hope to see you there next year!

Overall a decent fest. I recommend parking near the train station. (Or if you live near a BNSF…read morestop, convenient to take train to). Free admission. I have come multiple times to see a cover band. If you want to try some of the local restaurants, they have booths. It is a decent amount of walking. You can bring in your own chair to watch the bands or stand. They accept both cash and card at the beer tent. However, if you pay with card there is a fee. Vendors and crafts are same junk you see everywhere. Every year there is someone trying to sell me home improvements.

There is no admission charge and street parking isn't too difficult to find. This is my second time attending the event and loved the atmosphere in the mid afternoon. There were about 8-10 food tents or trucks offering samples of their best items. All food venders were local to the Westmont area which I love. Most of the vendor tents this year were home remodeling companies or community organizations. While this is nice, I missed some of the mom & pop vendors offering decor, candies, artisan goods, etc. Overall, this is a great family-friendly event. It may not be the biggest festival but it's enough. It's never been too crowded when I've come and I always enjoy the sense of community!

    Art Studio 928 - Painting with H&M

I've always wanted to go to a paint party but never saw one that I was interested in. I didn't want…read moreto paint scenery, etc. I wanted something different. Lo and behold, I saw a Facebook event at Hamburger Mary's hosted by Studio 928 and knew I found my perfect match! The events are themed like no other I have ever seen: Prince, Whitney, Michael Jackson, etc. and I had to try it! Now yes, I am an artistic person : I took 4 years of art in high school and 1 in college. But that was a LONG time ago. And my strong areas were abstract, layout, airbrushing, etc NOT people,(and I really didn't do a lot of work with acrylic paint) so I knew it would be a challenge for me in that sense. But I wasn't going to be perfect, I was going for fun and a new experience. And that is exactly what I got! Cheryl is a blast! She has a fun personality and is SO knowledgeable , patient and helpful You are not going in just to paint, you are going in to learn. She shows you how to mix colours, how to do shading, how to work with the paints, etc. and is always going to each person helping them out, giving suggestions, etc And in between instructions, she's telling jokes, asking trivia questions and giving away prizes. She completely set the bar for me for paint parties and not only am I glad that my first experience with one was with her, I don't even want to go to any others! If you think that you cannot paint or are not artistic, you will completely surprise yourself with what you can do. Cheryl has a way of bringing out the artist in everyone! I had so much fun at my first party that as soon as I got home, I set up an event set up for the gym that I go. We had it today and everyone had a blast! I HIGHLY recommend Studio 928 for ANY occasion and just for a fun afternoon. Check out their website and get yourself signed up for an event! You will not regret it!
