I dropped off a very sentimental watch that was a present from my deceased mother for repair. They had the watch shipped out for repair to where they said were experts in San Francisco. I had to call every 10 days or so because they never called me (even though they said they did, but never had any miss calls on my cell phone) finally after over a month they said that their expert repair shop could not get any repair parts to fix the watch. I DO NOT like leaving 1-star reviews on Yelp. I feel like vindictive people use them to burn businesses. So, I am breaking my usual pattern to give people a real, honest 1-star review. I have been a customer of Thornton & Sons for close to 30 years. I have bought beautiful pieces over the years, so when it was time to get a newer, bigger, better wedding ring 15 years ago I went to Thornton & Sons. I picked a beautiful ring, which has never given me a moment of trouble. Then, yesterday morning I noticed that a diamond had fallen out of the pave setting. I immediately took the ring off and brought it in to be repaired. The woman that helped me gave it to Thornton himself to look at and about a minute later she returned to me and said, "He declines to repair this ring." WTH?! I asked why and after a song and dance realized there was no way I would convince the jeweler to even try and fix it. If they won't even offer to try and repair a ring THEY sold, then I will never buy another piece of jewelry from them. I told the woman that and there was zero effort on their part to retain my business. The moral of this story is don't spend your hard earned money at Thornton & Sons. I just called and tried to tell company that the chain they had fixed two weeks ago broke and I had the manager speak to me and was trying to talk over me when I was talking also after they took a week in a half to fix when other companies would do it in one day. Decided to buy a Shinola watch from them in March 2023. Yesterday my watch started acting erratically and I brought it in. I was told when I purchased it that it had a 1 year warranty and if I had any issues to bring it in. Well that's not the way it went. They replaced the battery and said if that doesn't work that I was basically on my own and would need to send it out! So now the watch still won't work correctly and I'm now left on my own to deal with this. No support from this place at all. I'm out $600 in less than three months and it isn't about the money it's the principle try to do a good thing and support local businesses and this is what I get. Poor quality & horrible customer service. My husband and I have been married for 4 years and we unfortunately bought his ring at Thornton and Sons. After the first year and a half, the diamonds began to slide out and we requested they fix it. They gave us the hardest time but finally made it right. This morning we saw that the diamonds had completely fallen out and there was glue residue on the inside from where it was "repaired" not even two years ago. It's so sad that we won't even get to keep our first ring as a keepsake. I wouldn't recommend buying your sentimental pieces here, regardless of the amount of money you spend as they don't back their work and they are extremely difficult to deal with. They have helped me with watch adjustments numerous times and have never charged a cent. Kudo's on the great customer service Thornton's! Thornton's carries a nice selection of Japanese watches including a few special edition models I saw in the display case. In addition to a good selection of bridal and costume jewelry they carry a full selection of Pandora bracelets and charms as well. Pricing is reasonable considering they don't have chain store volume purchasing capability. Bought a $1600 bangle in June, 22. In Feb 23, we took it back as the clasp kept popping open and the bangle falling off. We were hoping they could repair to make the bangle safe to wear. Owner John Thornton said the bracelet was too small. Told him it had been fine for 9 months since we bought it and if it was too small why did their sales person not point that out at the time? He also made a point to rudely argue the bracelet was a year old ! It isn't we have the receipt but even if that were so there should not be an issue. He wears the same designer bangle and insisted on showing how his does not pop open when he flexed his wrist. The entire time he was rude, duragory and disrespectful. We had not asked for a replacement or refund just simply a repair. He claimed there was nothing wrong with the bangle. I later called the store and asked who the designer was. we were going to contact to see if they could assist with the repair. After being put on hold told by employee they claimed they did not know ! As the owner himself wears EXACTLY the same unique brand that is obviously a lie. This company is the worse vendor I have ever dealt with . There is NO after service . We did get the bangle repaired in town for $30 and within 2 hrs. Was told the bangle was misaligned and was why the clasp was not connecting. No fuss or drama, just did their job. I have bought 4 Seiko/Citizen watches from Thorton and Sons and took them in to have them repaired. I received them back where the crystals were not changed, the bands were still broken and only the batteries had been replaced. I left them with my daughter in law and when she sent them back to me I couldn't believe the poor service I had received. The man at the counter acted like he couldn't be bothered with such trivial service as replacing batteries and fixing what was broke. I will never do business with them again. I bought the four watches from them over the years before they moved to the outlet stores. Soooo disappointed. I'll find another jeweler. read more

We were quoted $1500 to service my husband's watch (Thornton & Sons sent it to SF for service). We were told the battery had been left in the watch too long and had caused damage. We decided not to have the swatch serviced and picked it up. A few months later we took it to a jeweler in Walnut Creek. The Walnut Creek jeweler also sent it out (directly to Cartier) to be serviced and have the battery replaced. The Walnut Creek Jeweler charged us $443 for the service and replacement of the battery and did not mention any problems with the watch. We have picked up the watch and it's working beautifully. Thornton & Sons quoted us $1,500 and said there was damage to the watch while a high end jeweler in Walnut Creek charged us $443 (plus $100 for shipping to and from Cartier) and did not mention anything about damage. Thornton & Sons wanted to charge us over $1,000 more to service the watch (not including shipping)!!! We believe in supporting local small businesses and expect that they too would support the community by providing the best or even adequate service. read more

Wasn't thinking clearly after a fun New Year's night out when we came home to the cabin we rented and hopped in the *highly chlorinated* hot tub. When I woke the next morning, I didn't feel great and it certainly didn't help that when I looked down at my silver rings and bracelet to see they were suddenly all BLACK! I took them into Thornton & Sons desperately hoping someone could magically turn my gross now pewter-looking rings back to their original silver glory. Really disappointed. We have spent over a thousand dollars at this jewellers, and yet they have no loyalty to us as customers. In 2008 we took a gold necklace in for a repair to the clasp, this is a very thick chain, that my husband wears all the time. they charged nearly $300 to change the clasp. a couple of weeks ago my husband noticed that the spring in the clasp was broken, so I took it in for repair. I was told that the failed spring was due to my husband wearing the necklace 24/7, which makes no sense as the spring had not been engaged to undo the necklace. I was then told that had it been a smaller clasp it would have a warranty, which makes even less sense and I told them so. Presuming that as a loyal customer they would give a discount on the repair, I left the necklace at Thorntons, whilst we waited for a quote. The next day Thornton and Sons called my husband and told him the clasp would be changed and it would cost $300. When my husband pointed out what I had been told, they replied that they could not give the clasp a warranty as there was too much gold in it. Newsflash, if they were changing the whole clasp then the extra gold had extra value, right? Which we presume is how they manage to give a warranty for the smaller clasps. Suffice to say, we will no longer be using this Jeweller again. We took it to Dongs, who repaired the clasp in 1 hour and it cost $50 read more

I went into Thornton & Sons last week with my Mom. I am looking for a wedding band and asked if they carried any enhancers. The woman helping me, middle-aged/causation, was extremely rude. She was very loud and wasn't really speaking to me but the whole entire store. She was very condescending and when I was explaining to her the reason I wanted an enhancer she said "Yeah I know I saw your ring" which is funny because she never asked to look at it. She was pretty much yelling at me saying no one wears enhancers anymore but honestly, that's not her business what kind of ring I wanted. In the past, I've experienced good customer service while at Thornton and Sons, but my last two visits were less than pleasant. I'm clearly not a high-spender when it comes to jewelry--I'm a college student with a part-time job. However, my mother has a Pandora bracelet (all purchased by my sisters and me at this location) and I've saved up to buy her charms for special occasions. During my last two visits to T&S, I asked to see their Pandora charms, but was turned away both times. The first time, back in June, the employee told me they had been stocked in the back room and to come back in a few days. Wasted trip #1. Today, I went back to purchase Pandora charms for a Christmas gift. They were just taking the charms out of the display case as I was walking inside. Rather than showing me what they had just removed from the display, they told me it'd be "easier" if I came back tomorrow. What if I had made a special trip from out of town? Wasted trip #2. I understand that Pandora charms aren't high-ticket items, and the employees probably don't make much commission from them. But I still don't think it's right to make customers come back because it would be "easier" for the salesperson. As a former salesperson, I went above and beyond for my customers--even if they weren't purchasing high-ticket items. In this case, my purchase clearly wasn't a priority. I'm sure they have lovely jewelry and fine salespeople if you're interested in something other than Pandora charms. As for me, however, I won't be going back to this store. read more

I've only purchased items from here about 5 times and have already experienced 2 negative customer service issues. The first was being told that a particular item was not available so I purchased what the store had on hand instead. About two months later I walked in and saw the original item I had requested and had wanted to purchase. They denied ever not carrying the item I had requested and stated that they always had them in stock. Even though I wanted to purchase the original item to replace the "fake" one they had sold me they would not give me a discount or any compensation for their salesperson's mistake. The person just wanted to make a sale regardless of the outcome. The second negative experience was being sold a defective item whose "white gold" exterior gradually wore off by itself over the course of one year. Again they would not discount nor even apologize for selling CHEAP items. They only gave excuses that each manufacture uses different ways to make the white gold look silver and that some do not last very long. In other words the people they purchase jewelry from are not reputable nor is the jewelry sold here high quality! read more

Came here a couple months ago to get my promised ring resized just a half size down. I walked in and was greeted and told the gentleman what service I needed done. He said okay no worries and started to fill out some paper work for my ring and the resize. I asked him what time I should come back and he said oh it will take about 3 weeks. 3 weeks to just get a ring resized seemed kind of silly to me. The price he quoted me on was about 40 bucks also. My husband believes in supporting local businesses so for the last 20 + years he's purchased my jewelry from Thornton and Sons. I took my watch in a couple of days ago to get a new battery installed. When I got home I discovered several scratches on the back and the back plate wasn't put back on correctly. When I spoke to them about it today they couldn't have cared less and was actually a bit rude. They said I signed a piece of paper saying they weren't liable for any damages (because when using metal tools on a metal backing mistakes can happen). Had they disclosed this in the beginning I would have sent the watch directly to The manufacture for the battery change. It's disappointing to be so loyal to a business and get treated so poorly. My first experience was walking into the store and hoping to see Omega watches. I was quite disappointed because they dont sell Omegas anymore but still show a huge advertisement on one of the windows outside. But they cleaned my wifes jewelry for FREE, we didnt even ask. They politely said, "unfortunately we dont carry omegas anymore, but would you like your jewelry cleaned?" Of course we couldnt resist. My second experience was with the same guy (Jeff) when I needed my high end watch (Rolex) resizing. Jeff who worked on the watch spent about 30 minutes meticulously sizing the watch. At the end I was holding my wallet, and Jeff again said it was FREE! He also explained that he could take the watch in the future to get it serviced in SF. To an authorized servicing center... In end, do not listen to Christy R.'s rant about inconsistent quoting. Thonton and Sons knows they cannot repair watches because they are not authorized to. So they send it to AUTHORIZED repair centers in accordance to the watch. Tag Heuer's go to authorized Tag repair centers, Rolex's go to authorized Rolex repair centers. If you buy a middle to high end watch and it needs service expect high prices. Thats all there is to it. Christy took it to another place which probably wasnt a authorized Tag servicer thus forth the lower price. You get what you pay for guys!! Went to Thornton to get buy a natural diamond. Bought diamond ring. 2 weeks later looking at paperwork, realized it was a manufactured diamond. Feeling deceived, went back to ask for refund. They have no refund policy though, but owner believed salesman who said he told us. We disagreed. Then the owner became very condescending and rude to the point my wife was bawling. Another employee stepped in and at a later date took care of us exchanging the diamond for a natural one. About 6 mos later the ring broke at the solder point. Took it to jewelry repair shop. He pointed out that diamond wasn't quite straight in setting also. He fixed both issues stating "not enough" solder used. My own opinion is that owner thought we had "buyers remorse" over spending so much, nothing could be further from the truth. I did not give my wife a budget and didn't need to.
