I took my watch in to have a battery installed. The man (not the elderly man) who tried to install the battery caused the hands to disengage. The watch was in excellent condition when I brought it in. They ruined it! The elderly man said he'd send it off.....somewhere....to be fixed. I was absolutely too uncomfortable to be taken in again. Many in the neighborhood are also uncomfortable with Zee Continental. I will not return. Last month I brought my Gold chain it had a problem with the locking mechanism and they straight fixed it in no time, no charge. The people who work and operate this store are rare, we are missing establishments in San Francisco like this, they are personable and they understand the value of customer service. I brought the same chain a week ago and they only took a week for them to repair it and I should be paying them for what they charged me. I've been going to Zee Continental off and on over the past couple of decades, dating back to when they were across the street. However, other than a recent impulse visit during which I bought a pair of lovely Peruvian silver earrings, it had been quite a few years since I'd been in. Then...I broke one of my favorite earrings. Not the ones I had purchased there...these are Clara Beau danglies with smoky-gray Swarovski crystals set in rustic metal. The earring broke in a very delicate spot so I wasn't sure how it could be fixed without looking messy or obvious. But I'm so enamored of these earrings that it was worth it to me to take the chance. I brought them in to Zee and they told me I'd need a laser soldering at $31. I put both earbobs in their capable hands and left, worried but hoping for the best. Well, I needn't have worried. Look at the pic I uploaded. One of these earrings broke where the little loop meets the rhinestone. Can you even tell which one it was? I can't! Bonus 1: The earring was ready within days...must sooner than their 2-week estimate. Bonus 2: When I asked whether I should have the other one reinforced, rather than jump at the chance to take my money they told me to just wait it out and see if it's even necessary. Bonus 3: When I asked them about getting a couple of pairs of silver earrings dipped into their cleaning solution then polished, they told me to just bring them in and it would be free of charge. I hope to not break any more jewelry, but if I do I know where to go! read more

I've attached a photo of the 14k gold plating Zee Continental performed on a large men's ring. The gold color appears completely accurate, with superb luster and shine (everyone assumes it's solid 14k gold). My boyfriend bought me a pair of earrings from this store for Christmas and after one use three of the tiny stones fell out. I took them back into the shop to get repaired. The gentleman at the counter was nice and said he would repair them for no charge. When I got the earrings back the stones were replaced with brown stones that didn't match the others in the hoops at all and was just as noticeably off as when the stones were missing. When I mentioned this to the gentleman upon picking them up he skirted around my comment and hurried to place them in an envelope like nothing was wrong. He didn't seem to care one bit that the work done was off and not done correctly. I would have gladly paid to have these repaired correctly. This place is low quality and not trustworthy. I would not recommend this stoe to anyone for purchases and definitely not repairs. Update on company's post - The person who responded to my post from Zee Continental completely lied in his post. I left the shop upset and unsatisfied. This business is unprofessional and their work is unsatisfactory. You can see from the photo the jewels are NOT the same. I wore these earring one time before the jewels popped out. For earnings that were about $300 the quality is poor. I was not charged for the poor quality repair because i was upset. Ring Re-sizing Gone Wrong My husband got his wedding ring resized here - he dropped off a 22K gold ring, and when I went to pick it up, it clearly seemed wrong in weight and appearance. I commented that the ring didn't seem right, and was quickly told I was wrong. Upon further inspection at home, the ring was marked 14K. It took going back into the shop, initially being told we were wrong, and then finally being taken seriously to find out that we had been given the wrong ring. To top it off, once we got (hopefully) his 22K ring back, it is lopsided in one place and looks poorly done. At best, this seems like a very careless and concerning mistake. At worst, the shop hoping that we wouldn't notice the difference between 22K and 14K gold. As a woman, I also did not appreciate the attitude of the men working in the shop - being called 'darling' and having my concerns disregarded until I came back with my husband felt patronizing. read more

I always like to support a local business! I've always had good experiences at Zee Continental. I had a couple of loose garnet stones that they made into some very nice stud earrings for me. They were happy to talk through options and make sure they came out as i wanted them. I've also had miscellaneous repairs done here (ring resizing, watch battery replacement etc.), and they have always done the job well and at a reasonable price. I have also popped in for their opinions on things, and they're always happy to oblige, even if i don't make an order or purchase at that time. Are the guys who work here a little quirky? Absolutely. So my 89 year old mother, who lives in the neighborhood and believes in supporting local businesses, takes her battery operated wall clock in to be repaired, to get a new mechanism installed so the hands don't flop around anymore. She calls me up after returning home from Zee Continental, to tell me the following: She picks up the clock after it's been "repaired", and it seems the same to her, clock hands flopping about. Mom went back with the clock to ask why it wasn't working, and she inquired if perhaps the clock wasn't repaired as stated. The (large, heavy) owner (?) of the store asked, how much did you pay for repairs, and she said, forty-something with taxes. He pulls $45 out of a drawer and - according to Mom - practically throws the money at her and yells at her not to come back. This woman is smart, articulate, and with a phenomenal memory. If she says this incident happened this way, anyone who knows her would believe her. This is not BS coming from her. SHAME on the owner/employee who so rudely treated an elder citizen who was trying to shop local. This is a pretty cut and dried story, there's no embellishing here, just facts. I've never been put in a situation where I've had to write a one-star review before, and it kills me to have to do it. Under no circumstances should anyone have to be treated with such disrespect. The store owner comes across as dry and sarcastic which never bothered me until I pushed back on a situation that was not only unsatisfactory, but completely dishonest. Sadly, I was met with rage and unprofessionalism. I asked him to polish an antique gold necklace that had a matte finish for me. He warned me that the process could break the chain, and I agreed. The chain broke (not the issue). He said he gave it to his goldsmith to repair it. I called to check on the necklace. He said it was ready. I show up, and the necklace was still broken....and missing a piece of the chain. It was clear he hadn't inspected the jewelry before I arrived. He quickly put it back in the envelope and said he would fix it "find the missing piece of the chain." He told me not to worry, and I trusted him. A few more days pass and he says it's ready. I show up and was so horrified I had to fight back tears. The chain had been replaced with something completely different chain and the whole necklace was dipped in a hideously bright gold finish. Again, it was clear he hadn't inspected the jewelry before I arrived. I immediately told him this wasn't my original chain. He questioned me with sarcasm and then said OK I'll ask the goldsmith what happened. His first response was that the goldsmith was an "old man." Not an excuse. It was clear to me he wanted to quiet the situation as he had other clients in the shop at the time. He promised to go to the goldsmith's shop personally that night to look for it. I call back the next morning, to ask what happened. He replied "nothing happened, he lost the chain." I was stunned. Now the entire chain was gone?? He then said "haven't you ever lost jewelry? Jewelers loose stuff all the time...and they replace stuff without people even knowing." For the record, several members of my family are jewelers and do not work with this loose understanding of possession. He kept saying he would either find it or replace it with something exact. I didn't want a replacement, I wanted my antique gold necklace back. I told him how frustrated I was, that it had been 2 weeks for a simple ask and that's when he lost his temper. I asked him why hadn't he inspected the retuned jewelry the 2 times times he got it back. He snapped back saying "you know why? Because I'm half-blind!" (???) He said this as though my questions about my jewelry were personally insulting him. He repeatedly interrupted me, raised his voice, cursed at me (GD), and hung up the phone. I called back 3 times....and as you can imagine, he didn't pick up. Hours later his colleague who was incredibly kind called saying that my necklace, in it's "original form" was ready. Somehow the lost jewelry was now found? I just picked it up, and upon inspection, and in an effort to not engage with this dishonest business again, we've discovered that my original chain was in fact replaced with one that is very similar, but it is indeed lighter in weight and not the original finish (matte) as promised and discussed over the phone. I can expect the owner to troll this comment with his defense, but I honestly couldn't care less. We have a record of the entire exchange of phone calls and there are more than a dozen other folks here on Yelp who could say the same thing about this owner. read more

Do not take anything here for repairs. A few years ago I took in a designer ring I'd purchased that needed to be soldered. Not only was the craftsmanship poor, whatever they used while handling my ring tarnished it. Maybe it wasn't the most expensive ring to begin with, but as an expert in jewelry repairs (and charging me $20) you should be careful and at least acknowledge what you did! I went back recently to have two necklaces fixed that also needed to be soldered. They quoted me $15 EACH necklace and a week to fix, which seems ridiculous given the simple procedure. I didn't feel like finding somewhere else so I agreed and asked if they'd polish the necklaces as well, which he said yes to. When I got my necklaces back, they were not polished at all. In fact, one appeared to be tarnished, and both are sterling silver pieces. For $15 each, the quality of work and care is sub-par. Hopefully I can find another place in the neighborhood. read more

I had a specific type of bracelet in mind, pretty hard to find, and Zee had exactly what I was looking for. The owners are friendly, but can be abrasive depending on the day. For repair work, they are fine for fixing a clasp, replacing watch batteries and simple repairs. I first went there around 6 months ago to buy a charm for my girlfriend. The guy I talked to was pretty nice even though he was trying to sell me more things than I was asking for. He apparently has been pretty convincing because I told him I'd like to purchase 2 more of their charms the following month for christmas. They didn't have it in stock so they wrote down my order on a piece of paper and told me to call them whenever to confirm so they can pass the order. Few weeks later, I give them a call back to get those 2 new charms. A woman that I saw the previous time picks up the phone and refuses to do the ordering unless I come to the shop. Even after explaining her the situation, she just keeps saying no in a very mean way. They're open from 1030 to 6 during week days, which is not compatible with my work week, so she "offers" me to come on saturday (few days before christmas) so she can do an express ordering and charge me an extra $50 for that, instead of just ordering it right away. Upon pushing back on the work, the staff was abrasive unfriendly. Luckily one gentleman couldn't deny the awful service and offered to clean and try and get it redone. I have been bringing my jewelry here for 10 years for simple repairs.(watch battery replacement ,band adjustment for new watches and even good costume jewelry repairs) I collect estate & vintage jewelry and love this place. If i purchased earrings that have clip ons or screw backs, Zee was able to convert these earrings to a simple back post. I am also notorious for losing backs of earrings and what's great is that you can purchase extra ones here. What I like most about this place is the mixture of modern and vintage pieces. The atmosphere is relaxed and more casual than the high end jewelers downtown. Zee has comparable selection on the high end spectrum but without the exorbitant prices. In fact, I came across these Eiffel tower earrings in their window. These earrings were handmade in France during the Art Deco period. The amazing craftsmanship includes rubies, diamonds, and black onyx and gold. The details are exquisite and so unusual. I must of looked a them in the window for a course of a year. The owners are always friendly, attentive and not pressure type sales people. When I inquired about the history of the designer, they informed me they brought the piece to Sotheby's. I was impressed by the amount of research they pursued. Even mored delighted that they gave me a tremendous discount in these recession times. Now, this piece has now become a treasured part of my collection. Zee staff is trustworthy and so knowledgeable about the history, quality and craftsmanship of their jewelry. Their estate collection ranges from civil-war cameo earrings, Victorian hat pins, and one of a kind pieces. Their contemporary selection is great to shop for gifts.
