Unprofessional Communication and an Unnecessarily Frustrating Scheduling Experience!…read more I haven't even made it through the front door of Collins Animal Hospital, and I'm already incredibly disappointed by the level of customer service and lack of professionalism. Earlier today, I called the clinic to inquire about scheduling examinations for my guinea pigs. The woman I spoke with informed me that I could schedule an appointment online. Simple enough, right? Apparently not. When I visited their website, I discovered that new clients are specifically instructed to EMAIL the clinic to schedule an appointment. So, I followed their instructions and sent an email. The response I received? I needed to CALL the clinic to schedule. Let's recap: I called and was told to go online. I went online and was told to email. I emailed and was told to call. Does anyone at this establishment actually know their own scheduling procedures? When I expressed my frustration with these contradictory instructions, rather than acknowledging the confusion or making any attempt to resolve the situation, the response I received came across as defensive and dismissive. I even provided a screenshot of their own website to explain why I had emailed in the first place. What makes this experience particularly frustrating is how easily it could have been resolved. I was already on the phone with the clinic initially. Why wasn't I simply offered the opportunity to schedule an appointment then? And once I had established an email conversation explaining the situation, why was there seemingly no effort to help facilitate an appointment or provide a straightforward solution? As a prospective new client seeking veterinary care for my guinea pigs, I expect basic professionalism, clear communication, and a reasonable willingness to assist. I don't expect to be sent in circles between three different methods of communication, only to encounter an attitude when I point out the inconsistencies. Customer service is not just about answering a phone or responding to an email. It's about actually helping the person on the other end. I cannot speak to the quality of veterinary care at Collins Animal Hospital because I never even made it to an appointment. However, based on this experience, their new-client communication and scheduling process leave a great deal to be desired. For a business entrusted with the health and well-being of people's pets, I would expect considerably more attention to detail, accountability, and professionalism. First impressions matter. Unfortunately, this one was terrible.

The doctor did do a thorough checking out my dog... but then decided that my dog had a joint issue... and needed x-rays. I had them done... not once but twice (the doctor apparently needed a second look) which cost me an extra 125.00. Then, he decided that his colon was swollen and needed to be rushed to the hospital. Skeptical, I never brought my dog to the hospital, and she is fine. I will never take my dog here again - I feel that the Vet was simply trying to get as much dough out of my pocket as possible by taking a very conservative approach at examining my dog. Beware.

But the pricing was outrageous and it felt like the vet was receiving a commission for each test performed. I declined the $400 respiratory panel and several other tests that would have pushed my bill over $1,000. Subsequently, I took my pet to a veterinary ophthalmologist at Veterinary Referral Associates who - for $250 including the eye test - immediately diagnosed the infection as viral and prescribed a different treatment. My 12 year old dog had been battling nasal cancer for 10 months, so I knew that the time I had left with him was winding down. I had been researching end of life care since the moment of his diagnosis, so I was familiar with Lap of Love's services through the recommendation of different vets, as well as from the what I researched online. What appealed to me the most about Lap of Love is that their services can take place in your home. If I were to have the option, I always knew that I would want my dog's end of life care and/or euthanasia to take place in the comfort of my home if possible. So as my dog's health continued to decline during that final week, I knew it was time to make the call. Luckily, I was able to book an appointment online in the middle of the night for a vet to come out the following afternoon. At that point, my dog had stopped eating and I could tell that his breathing patterns were starting to change. Although I felt it was time, I booked for a hospice visit just in case I woke up in the morning and he had signs of vitality. With that service, the vet would come out to our home, evaluate my dog and either provide further care or help us make the call that it was time. Either way, it took some pressure off knowing that I would have a professional evaluation or emergency care on deck no matter what. However, as the morning went on, it was clear that my dog's life was coming to an end. I took the day off to spend the rest of the day loving on my dog with my family. When Dr. Karen arrived, it was like we were blessed with an angel in human form. Dr. Karen was so gentle, kind, loving, patient and professional. She took time to read through my dog's lengthy medical history, reflect about my dog's life, looked at old pictures we shared with her and walk us through what to expect. It felt as though in that moment, she was a part of our family. She genuinely took the time to ensure that we felt comforted and supported. Everything went as smoothly and peacefully as possible. I was able to pray over my dog as he passed, pet him and hold his paws throughout the process. She took the care to tuck him into his sweet little basket with bedding after the process was over. He just looked like he was tucked in, peacefully sleeping. She also took a mold of his paws for us to keep and left us with some resources about grief. The next day she also followed up via email to offer additional support and share resources about support groups and grief counseling services that the business offered. I actually joined their free, virtual support group session two nights after my dog passed away and found some of the perspectives shared from the grief counselor to be helpful and comforting. Although, I likely will never have to go through this again if I had to I would do it all the same again with the support of Lap of Love. If you find yourself in this difficult position, I couldn't possibly give a stronger recommendation based on our perfect experience.

My initial call was taken with care and patience as I cried the whole way thru it to make the appointment. I answered a series of questions, and the intake representative was sensitive to my emotions. One thing I noted was that they asked if we would mind the vet coming early if she was free earlier than our appointment time. I thought that was very considerate! We were originally scheduled with a different doctor but got reassigned to Dr. Kamilah who turned out to be perfect for us. She came right on time (to the minute, I think), and her manner was so calming. She took the time to let us talk about Duke so she could get to know him a bit before doing anything. She gave us space when we needed it and she was kind, understanding, and patient with us because we struggled A LOT preparing for the time to start the process. She talked us through everything and made sure we were ready to proceed before moving forward each step of the way. She was so gentle and caring. Even after the procedure was finished, she was so gentle when taking Duke's paw print, shaving some fur for us to keep, and moving him. Another thing I'll never forget is how she was so considerate when letting us know Duke was no longer with us. She said, "he's at peace." and I thought that was very kind rather than "he's gone" or something less delicate. Dr. Kamilah acknowledged how hard it was and made us feel comfortable being so emotional. She let us cry and love on Duke for as long as we wanted. She was absolutely wonderful and I can't express enough how grateful I am for the support she showed our family on one of the hardest days of our lives.
