Chocolate cream pie, and strawberry rhubarb pie.
Cindy Y.

This family owned business has been a lifesaver during the COVID-19 #stayhome times. Mike Thompson - you're my hero! Amazing baked goods includes their signature doughnuts, but also cream horns, whoppie pies, and delicious pies like strawberry rhubarb and chocolate cream. They also have staples such as TP, butter, flour, yeast, and eggs, which certainly helped out when those things weren't, and in some cases still aren't, available at local grocers. They have also extended their inventory to include deli meats and cheeses, and meats for grilling. Check out their Facebook page for more details and make the trip. You won't be disappointed.

Just dropped by to grab some donuts. We will be coming back to pick apples this weekend, because this place is BEAUTIFUL!!!'

They usually have 5 different apple types you can choose from throughout the orchard. Plan on being there for a minimum of 30 minutes for apple picking. You do have to walk through the orchard so also bring sneakers and not flip flops! Make sure you try their doughnuts and apple cider. It's made fresh everyday!

Welcome to Thompson's Orchards!

Thompson's is a lovely orchard set just outside of Portland. The drive out in the autumn is beautiful and totally worth it. It can get INSANELY busy on the weekends with families, so take that into consideration. However, that IS when they have the majority of their delicious appley sweet treats. If that doesn't matter to you, and you prefer a quieter experience (and are lucky enough to be able to do so), then week days are just as wonderful. Hot cider in hand (two for $3; gotta love those just-outside-of-Portland-prices), we wandered through the orchard on a Monday afternoon with no one else around us. We picked just a few pounds of Macs and Cortlands to go home and make apple crisp with. The leftover apples just for eating, my boyfriend swears were the best he's ever had in his life. I have to agree - the apple I ate while picking (sorry about that, Thompson's!, I promise it was only one) was so crisp and juicy and flavorful - unlike anything I had had in a long time. We spent a few minutes warming up inside at Thompson's because it was bitter cold when we were there. It was really pleasant - there were some octogenarians sitting in rockers around the wood stove chatting while a teenage girl with her headphones in made donuts in the bakery. Just a really charming juxtaposition. The vintage stuff they have throughout the inside wooden structure is really fascinating stuff, so if you're into that sort of thing, definitely make it a point to look through it all! Finally, the baked goods were so delicious looking it was almost unbearable. From apple cream puff pastries to raspberry turnovers, from a variety of cupcakes to the most enormous and gooey looking chocolate-sea salt-caramel brownies in the world... they definitely have a variety of options for very palette. When we were there they had just two donut types for sale: chocolate and plain. Unfortunately, the plain donuts are literally just that... plain (vanilla), not apple cider flavored. So we decided to forgo getting anything. But don't let that stop you from getting in on all that wonderfulness!

Had the best fresh donuts that I have ever tasted! The apple picking was fun and easy with a great selection! Parking was easy! Also bought a big pumpkin from them that was beautiful! Must try donuts!!

They had an offer called Bleubs & Blooms where for $45 you could pick four pints of blueberries AND make two bouquets of flowers with as many flowers as you could get in the provided glass jar from their beautiful field. The staff was lovely! Engaging and encouraging and educated; every question we had, they had a great answer for. We were given tips, tricks, and advice for picking ("go way down back, because no one seems to be doing that and the blueberries are amazing down there" and "there aren't many raspberries left, so we won't charge you if you take a pint and don't end up filling it"); it was a genuinely wholesome and organic feeling interacting with them and being allowed to wander the property at our own pace. There was no tipping expected/required, we could walk down to the rows of blueberries ourselves or grab an occasional golf cart going by, we were allowed to spend as much time as we wanted in the flower field. There were shaded picnic tables for us to sit and relax under; a small table near the check-out area with random produce available for purchase as well, lots of good signage, bathrooms, and no extra entertainment/fan fare/distractions. Just a farm that you go pick some produce on. I like that simplicity, and I so appreciated being to do that here!

It's very much off the beaten path but an absolute worthy spot of taking a detour for! The dirt roads were very well maintained though I must say. Once you arrive they have a giant parking lot and then once inside you step into a beautifully designed rustic space. If the weather is nice they have some absolutely stunning views you can take in outside while enjoying your beverage. During our visit, I will say a large portion of the space was in use for a party/event. Despite this the staff were very warm and welcoming to our party and even tried to create a private lounge like space for us. I very much appreciated the effort they put to make us feel welcome. I wish the weather would have been a little nicer to enjoy outside! I got their vanilla hard cider while my wife got their blueberry hard cider. Both were phenomenal. They also offer flights for only $10 and even have suggestions for some mixing of ciders including a fan favorite mix of blueberry and maple to create a blueberry pancake. I have had this blend previously and it is amazing! A spot worth adding to your list to visit for the breath-taking views and delicious drinks!

Many varieties of Ricker Hill hard cider are available, along with wine and sweet (non-alcoholic) ciders. My favorite was the Mainiac Mac Blueberry cider, made from a blend of fresh fermented apples and fresh Maine blueberries. This drink embodies the Maine wild blueberry taste that I love! It drinks sweet and tangy, a flavorful kick for your taste buds. The panoramic vista affords 360 degree views of Sabbatus Lake, the western mountains of Maine, and Mount Washington. Beautiful scenery and delicious cider. A great way to enjoy an afternoon or evening!
