I was in there on Friday 2nd October and they have a brand new menu which is Lancashire Tapas. Food ranging between £1 and £3. Things like rag pudding, hot pot, fish and chips, white bait, black pudding and yes you guessed it bumpy lane pie all in tapas size portions. Tremendous....although we did get carried away and ordered far too much. I would reccommend 2 people share 3 starters and 5 mains or 5 staters 4 mains + side dish of chips and veg. Well worth a visit. This pub is dog friendly but beware resident cat "snug" is first in the pecking order for all those leftovers.

Food ranging between £1 and £3...how inspired! Things like rag pudding, hot pot, fish and chips, white bait, black pudding and yes you guessed it bumpy lane pie all in tapas size portions, it was a first for me to sample rustic real northern cuisine all in one go! Although we did get carried away and ordered far too much, but at these prices who cares. The food was seriously good for what it is, and I will recommend making the little trip (and probably getting lost like I did) to hunt down this quaint little gem.

A good range of beers on tap, especially considering that the pub is owned by J.W. Lees, a fairly small local brewery. The pub caters well for football fans as there are plenty of screens. The only let down in the Landlord, who I have fortunately never spoken to, but have experience being rude to customers on many occasions, for no understandable reason. I also went to the Rose of Lancaster to do the pub quiz once and was unable to do so as the Land lord (Who is the 'Quiz Master') was too drunk to operate the PA system. It turned out that this was because Man UTD had been playing before the quiz was due to start and had lost, and the land lord is a big UTD supporter. How unprofessional.

I recently signed up to receive offers from the Rose of Lancaster, a pub I've frequented for…read moresomething like 30 years on and off. I did this after filling in one of their little customer review forms giving them a glowing assessment in which I said something to the effect 'decent food at reasonable prices served by great people.' Then on Friday the offers began to come to my email address '20% off food and drink if you book online.' So I tried to book a table for two for Saturday and found there were no tables available. Well, there you go. Popular pub with a restaurant in high demand. Can't be helped I thought. So my wife and I go for a walk down the Rochdale Canal and end up at the Rose at about 4.30 on Saturday to find an empty restaurant. I'd gone to pick up the car and got in five minutes after my wife who had had a chat with some of the young but not so enthusiastic staff. She had got us a table and a bottle of wine and asked one of the waiting staff about the offer of 20% off. The answer was that it had expired. 'But we only got an email yesterday, tried to book on line but your site wouldn't let us and now I'm sat in an empty restaurant so can you explain why there were no tables available?' There was no explanation forthcoming but the manager had said we needed to book on line and bring a print off of the email. I then arrived and after quite a wait while two young women waiters wandered about paying no attention to us or the people who now occupied the next table and another sat near the till doing very little, one came to us to take our order. This time I asked if we could see the manager to discuss this great offer of 20% off all food and drink. After all we were in a pub we liked, at a table in a nice little restaurant absolutely determined to spend our money. The manager came and began to patiently talk down to me by informing me that we had to book online to get the discount. I was still holding out in my determination to spend money in this pub and in my faith that a manager might just want some of my hard earned cash enough to offer something of a compromise. I was wrong. She insisted that not only did we have to book online, I had to print off the email. I informed her that I had tried to book online but her site had not allowed it; that the email also said I could show her the offer on my phone, which I did and that the place was empty other than us and the people who were now occupying the next table. She then informed me that I probably couldn't book online because they were very busy. She was oblivious to the evidence of the empty room that sort of contradicted her statement. And then she returned to her mantra that we had to book online to get 20% off. So what could we do? I said that we would rather not spend any more money or time in the place so could we have our bill for the wine and we would go elsewhere to eat? The bill came, I paid and sat for a while in a virtually empty restaurant while we finished the bottle of wine and watched the people at the next table get up to find someone to take their order for some drinks. I don't think we will be going there again.

Great night here for bf's birthday…read more We started in the downstairs pub area and bf tried some of the ale brewed in the basement, which he said was very good. The bar staff and manager were really friendly and also nice to each other, which gave an overall very positive impression of how the Clarence is run. Upstairs in the attractive restaurant area we were seated by the window and were quickly approached for our drinks order by the server who was brilliant throughout the meal. She was very pleasant and efficient and gave me helpful advice on what to order. We started with the generous-sized black pudding and leek croquettes with a pear and porter sauce which bf loved. Next up I had the roe deer and bf had strip steak. Bf extremely happy with the steak and also commented that the chips were "American standard." I ate most of his perfectly cooked greens. My own dish was really interesting - it was cooked perfectly and also featured a little pie which I was not expecting! The menu has many good points. It's varied both in type of dish and price, so you can come for a special occasion or weekday dinner. It features local elements like the Bury black pudding. It has a good range of steaks. And it has more unusual dishes like the roe deer, venison in my experience being comparatively rare on Manchester menus. Drinks-wise, we enjoyed the light Sauvignon Blanc rose and some kind of delicious port-like dessert wine which was basically like drinking raisins without the plastic aftertaste. Unfortunately we did not get to sample the cocktail bar as it is only open Fridays and Saturdays but bf says it is v nice and if you dine you can normally get in for drinks, even though it's otherwise members only (£250 a year). Will have to return for that, and also for the great-sounding Sunday lunch! Overall well worth a little excursion to Bury and a no-brainer if you're in the area. Only word of caution is that there may not be a lot of choice for vegetarians, so check menu on website before you go.

Downstairs is a traditional pub and a few tables. I can imagine it gets very busy at the weekend. The restaurant, upstairs, is lovely and very large. After looking at the menu, it was clear that the sunday roast was going to be the winner, so i opted for the beef Sunday roast with yorkshire pudding and all the veg! We also ordered cauliflower cheese on the side as an extra. Overall i couldn't fault the meal. It was excellent and the service was impeccable too!
