The definition of proper FISH AND CHIPS. Independent, old skwl, indie all those kind of patriotic qualities are embodied in this simple institution. You head in, they have the heaters, the fryers, the bags of chips and the assortment of plastic 80s style tables and seating. You order fish and chips, chips and gravy, chips and curry sauce or my favourite chips and mushy peas. You given a lumped bag of greasy potato and you enjoy. Traveling from the US. Had to check meat pie off my English food list. I first got a pie (3£) from the farmers market that was greatly disappointing. So I journeyed the short walk to Kingfisher. Even better than its closest Manchester rival, The Battered Cod in Fallowfield. Gravy is amazing too, proper northern tasty salty gravy. The chips have been recooked. They taste like hard little pieces of paper. It's actually disgusting. And to top it off the portion size is extremely small compared to the average chippy. The gravy is extra thin too. It's so poor I felt compelled to warn other people. read more

Easily knocking Leo's Fish Bar off the top spot for chippies in the Northern Quarter, Kingfisher has it all wrapped up and drenched in vinegar. Never has batter been so crispy or fish so soft and white. Prices are more than reasonable with chips at a decent £1.10, fish double this at £2.20 and yes, you guessed it, fish AND chips for a gleaming £3.30. So yes, the food is great and the prices reasonable, but the service is spectacular. From the moment you walk in its like you're at the Ritz. There's no shouts of 'NEXT!' or 'Yes love,' here. It's all 'How can I help you miss? Right away miss, would you please like ketchup miss?' Yes I would. And thanks for asking so nicely. Your food will arrive moments after you ordered in, carefully wrapped and soaked in just as much (or little) sauce as you require. Pretty standard ,nothing fancy, which is what you want from a chippy. Always friendly staff and always clean and tidy. Shame they don't do haddock or any other fish other than cod. Also a shame they're not open more evenings as there is a serious lack of chippies in NQ/Ancoats. read more

Absolutely brilliant, I had fish and chips for lunch today and everything on y plate was delicious. Crispy, fresh fish, home-cut chips and the mushy peas were so full of flavour I was blown away! It's almost impossible these to find a quality local chippy that does proper fish and chips in a quaint British cafe setting. Stunning, will be back again soon. read more
