Having been a fan of the original Foster's venue from my days as a student on placement, I was delighted when they opened up in Didsbury a couple of years back. Unlike the Battered Cod & some other chippies that I have frequented (& to be fair, enjoyed in the moment) the chips do not leave me feeling uncomfortable afterwards and, more importantly, they taste great. If you eat in the restaurant section, you can have as many as you want too! The fish is also delicious with batter that has a good bite to it but is not at all greasy. In fact, their fish & chips is so good that I attempted the Male vs Whale challenge last Summer (see http://wp.me/p1TJO-1j for the full write up of that). Challenge is the operative word! I've never been so (almost literally) torn. A plate full of fabulous food, yet my eyes and stomach bulging to the point of almost no return.... If you want buckets of chips cooked in tellingly fresh oil, moby dick sized portions of fish (Haddock or Cod) and freshly homemade mushy peas and curry sauce then Fosters is your best bet. In fact of all the Manchester fish and chips shops I've been to - Leo's, The Friary etc - Fosters is the one that will actually make you go out of your way to visit or maybe plan your night around it. Based in Didsbury Village but also with an excellent branch in upmarket Alderley Edge, Fosters offers a dine in and takeaway service. Having been at Didsbury Beer Festival all afternoon, an evening of stodge was well required and deciding to go without the formalities of having to dine in, takeaway seemed a smart choice (until I got home and realised that my wifes plan was to watch the X-factor - oh how I wished to have stayed at the beer fest!) For 2 haddock, 2 chips and the peas and curry sauce mentioned above it was £16.50 which was pretty good value. Service was quick and 2 guys on the counter seemed up for a chat, unless that was just me after a good few pints of fine craft beer.... This takeaway occasion was great although we have been in the day before (around 6 months ago) and found the Saturday service to be fairly poor and staff very unfriendly so it's up to you really if you want to chance it by dining in. read more

This review is based on the take out and not the sit in. I visited here on good Friday which was definitely evident from the amount of people buying fish n chips... I was a little disappointed to find that they only had cod as they had sold out of the rest of the menu. The lady who was serving was a little unfriendly but I guess I would be looking how busy they were. The portions are pretty generous for the cost although I have had better, larger quantities for less elsewhere. When I got home this chips, although tasty, were a little soggy and not crispy - I prefer them wrapped in paper instead of polystyrene tray as I think they travel better. On the other hand, the fish was excellent - large and still nice and crispy on the outside and soft and flaky in the middle... The peas were also excellent. I think in future one fish and one chips is enough to share between 2 of you. Will definitely try again on a quieter day to see if it makes any difference. Overall a pleasant chippy. read more

I've eaten in at both the Didsbury and Alderley Edge branches of Fosters but on a cold and rainy Autumn evening after being out all day all I wanted was a takeaway, my sofa and Saturday night tv. Fosters is definitely one of the best fish and chip shops in Manchester and the takeaway was just as good as any meal I've eaten in there: crispy battered haddock, the fish just gently flaking away and 'proper' chip shop chips that were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The chips are fresh, the batter on the fish crisp and the décor rather quaint, with wooden benches to sit on why your watch the guys in the takeaway next door busy behind the fryer. If you want decent quality fish and chips then Fosters in Didsbury Village is the place to go. There is the option to take away or sit in and everything is very fresh and reasonably priced. The last couple of times we have been to Fosters we have decided to sit in and eat. The restaurant is very pleasant and there are wooden benches to sit on and nice décor. The service is very swift and efficient and you're not waiting for much longer than you would for a take away for your food to arrive. You can also have a glass of wine or beer with your meal. The menu has a good choice with different sizes of fish and different types to try such as hake, cod, haddock, pollock and sea bass. Having recently complained about the absence of a decent chippy in and around the centre of Manchester, I have now sampled two in the space of a week - clearly I haven't been looking hard enough. It's difficult to go wrong with a fish and chip shop but I think it is difficult to find one that is very very right; this corner takeaway certainly achieves that. The chips are more traditional than your average takeaway and though the prices are steep, the size of the fish will knock you out! Service was quite slow but the staff were lovely. One thing that lets Foster's down is that not only do you need to take a little more cash than you usually would to a chip shop (think £6 rather than £3) but the portions, besides the fish, are disappointedly smaller. Best fish and chips in Manchester, having tried many and always struggled. Never eaten in, we always take it home- yeah ok they use trays but I can cope with this. The queues can be long on Fridays/Saturdays but it's totally worth it. The fish is very fresh, the chips are very tasty- you can tell they are homemade and not too greasy either. We're always impressed by the service even when they are rammed, definitely worth checking out to satisfy any cravings :) My only gripes, it is expensive and the mushy pea portions are never big enough!!! read more

You can't beat a good fish and chips, especially when annoyed at the world as it's a particularly wintry April evening! And Fosters take away is a good spot for it. The standard is reliable, not the best fish and chips I've ever had but very good and always fresh. They've also got plenty of pies, sausages, 1/2 chickens, kids meals and quite a few sides too. It's not the cheapest, fish and chips setting you back around the £6 mark but they do a credit crunch lunch for £4.50 and there are trays for 2 which make things a bit more reasonable. The attached restaurant's BYOB, staff are always super friendly and there are lots of fish/chips related puns around the plaice (get it??). Expect to add a couple of quid to the take away prices above, it generally comes to around a tenner per person with tip. Again, not the cheapest, but I suppose in the Didsbury purse range. Oh, and if you want more chips (I dare you to be able to fit more!) they'll give you more for free, which is a nice touch. Was a bit difficult ordering in the shop as the staff didn't seem to know about their deals, or how to work the till, and they were all a bit bickery - maybe just a bad day. The food came in a big foil container and was cold by the time we got it home 1 mile away. The fish was good meaty and succulent, the chips were average - a bit underdone. Price-wise it was a bit more expensive than your average local chippy. That's supposedly for a premium product but I couldn't recommend it as that. It comes with a wedge of lemon which seems to be about the only 'upmarket' aspect of the experience. I have no affiliation with them, but if you can get to the Battered Cod in Withington it's better, bigger, and cheaper. read more

Fosters Fish & Chips is sooo good! Their portions are generous, the chips have always been good and they do some great deals for eating in and take-away. I think there should be more places like this, good english fish & chips with a varied menu. Dining-in is great, good service and cool decor, a lot better than your average chippy! read more

Due to a combination of living abroad and being gluten free, we had been deprived of great fish and chips for sometime. So when we saw that Fosters sold gluten free fish and chips on Sunday's we weren't going to miss our opportunity to indulge and boy am I glad we went. We turned up on Sunday around 8pm for take out and we were greeted by the friendliest staff. They gave us time to look at the board, they explained that they make gluten free chips and sausage all the time but the fish was specially made gluten free specifically on Sunday's. We had a 5 minute wait while everything was prepared. There's a couple of benches to sit on while you wait and the other patrons were truly friendly and we even struck up a conversation with one couple. At this point I was beginning to wonder if we were in the uk at all. The food was ready in no time. We requested the gluten free vinegar. All the food was piping hot even after the drive home. The fish and chips were wrapped separately which I definitely approve of as it prevents your chips from becoming greasy and the portions were decent. The cod was deliciously succulent with a light well seasoned but not very crispy batter. The chips were exactly as you would expect, chunky, hot, potatoey goodness. We had also gone for a gf sausage which had been a guilty pleasure what with it being processed and maybe processed again for good measure. The pricing of the the food was reasonable and there is even a restaurant to sit in if you didn't want to go for the take out option.
