The smell as you pass a chippy is enough to draw in all but those with the ultimate power of will, and this is completely the case with the Battered Cod. It opens early in the morning and serves fried breakfasts, coffees and tea-cakes to those shopping in town, and at some point in the day, the fryers come on and more traditional 'chippy fayre' is on offer. I commend the quality of this whole-heartedly; a portion of fish, chips, mushy-peas and gravy from here is as good as anywhere in the Manchester area, and whilst no more 'fresh from the sea' than anywhere else this far from the coast, the food is high quality, high-value, filling, and refreshingly british. Though admittedly it doesn't have a cool interior like Fish Bait in West Didsbury (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/fish-bait-fish-bar-manchester), they resemble the ever-so-British chippy of slightly worn counter tops and plastic chairs. There's plenty of seating in there if you wanted to eat in. My order came to £6, which seemed reasonable given the size of the fish and the portion of chips. And the verdict was, well, A-OK - the fish's batter was light and crispy, the fish itself was tender (if fish can be 'tender'...) and the chips were really good, especially the ones smothered in curry sauce. This is tucked round a corner(the Urmston furniture centre is on the corner directly opposite the TSB) Anyway, the first thing you will normally see is the huge queues, the reason is two fold-the shop is very small and the food being so fantastic attracts loads of people Along with the usual chippy stuff they also do loads of specials, have two curry offers each day, but hte real star of the show is the yummy fish which is well worth the wait. The queues ARE big but htey move the crowd really well. The staff are friendly and the portions are excellent. The parking may be a problem at the moment but honestly it is well worth the effort.

Another person came in and wanted an order three times the size of mine. But some how received his order ahead of me. When I queired this I was told Hake takes longer. I know some people that travel quite a distance to get a fish supper from here and there can be quite a queue. Being in a wooden hut, it's burnt down more than once, however it simply keeps returning and the quality doesn't drop. There is a little space nearby to park a car if it's a little out of your way, so if you feel like a quality no-nonsense fish and chip supper at home (as this is only a takeaway), head to this place and try and claim this review is wrong :-)
