Having been a fan of the original Foster's venue from my days as a student on placement, I was…read moredelighted when they opened up in Didsbury a couple of years back. Unlike the Battered Cod & some other chippies that I have frequented (& to be fair, enjoyed in the moment) the chips do not leave me feeling uncomfortable afterwards and, more importantly, they taste great. If you eat in the restaurant section, you can have as many as you want too! The fish is also delicious with batter that has a good bite to it but is not at all greasy. In fact, their fish & chips is so good that I attempted the Male vs Whale challenge last Summer (see http://wp.me/p1TJO-1j for the full write up of that). Challenge is the operative word! I've never been so (almost literally) torn. A plate full of fabulous food, yet my eyes and stomach bulging to the point of almost no return.... If you follow Foster's on Twitter ( @fostersfish ) they often do a 'twitter tuesday' offer where you can pick up a certain meal/menu item for a discount rate & last year they even hid some tickets/vouchers around Didsbury.

If you want buckets of chips cooked in tellingly fresh oil, moby dick sized portions of fish…read more(Haddock or Cod) and freshly homemade mushy peas and curry sauce then Fosters is your best bet. In fact of all the Manchester fish and chips shops I've been to - Leo's, The Friary etc - Fosters is the one that will actually make you go out of your way to visit or maybe plan your night around it. Based in Didsbury Village but also with an excellent branch in upmarket Alderley Edge, Fosters offers a dine in and takeaway service. Having been at Didsbury Beer Festival all afternoon, an evening of stodge was well required and deciding to go without the formalities of having to dine in, takeaway seemed a smart choice (until I got home and realised that my wifes plan was to watch the X-factor - oh how I wished to have stayed at the beer fest!) For 2 haddock, 2 chips and the peas and curry sauce mentioned above it was £16.50 which was pretty good value. Service was quick and 2 guys on the counter seemed up for a chat, unless that was just me after a good few pints of fine craft beer.... This takeaway occasion was great although we have been in the day before (around 6 months ago) and found the Saturday service to be fairly poor and staff very unfriendly so it's up to you really if you want to chance it by dining in.

Is there a great chippy in Manchester? I'm yet to be convinced. But Didsbury Fish Bar is solid and…read morethat isn't to be sniffed at. As I've said in the past, fish and chips has a lot of potential to go wrong. If the quality isn't there you get a heavy and stodgy meal that you'll regret eating soon after. Didsbury Fish Bar is safely above that level. But it still isn't good enough to make me really look forward to having it. To do into detail, the chips are fine and not overly greasy. The fish is good, but the batter doesn't really do it for me. Quite a light batter which works well for avoiding post-chippy regret but doesn't really taste of much. The food is better than merely inoffensive, but not by a mile. One bonus is the mini-meal available around lunchtimes. £2.50 gets you a (very) small piece of fish and some chips. Not bad value at all, but the portion is the modest side of medium so not great value either. I used to live near a chippy in London which did a sizeable and delicious lunch deal for £3.50, the lack of that kind of value in Manchester does bemuse me somewhat. To summarise, Didsbury Fish Bar is worth a visit but it isn't going to be a regular trip for me. Still, given many chippies would have me actively avoid them if friends were going it remains one of the best around.

As mentioned by others the fish is great and, personally, I love the chips as well. I'm from belgium, we take our fries seriously over there. In my opinion you can't find a better fry in Manchester than these twice fried, smaller-cut badboys. Go get some!

Disclaimer; I haven't visited the actual takeaway but I did get fish and chips from here (which my…read morewife picked up) and I paid for it so that should make me qualified to write a review of this place ;-) A Chinese/Fish and Chips shop - we'd heard great things about this place in our ongoing quest to hunt down the best takeaways in the area and upon driving down to Heaton Mersey we weren't disappointed with the tasty outcome once we got home with it. Lovely fresh fish, light batter and chips that tasted so fresh! Great value to and my wife said the ordering experience was super easy and was in and out in a flash. Really looking forward to getting back here soon!

At Golden Gate, you'll find a superb selection of traditional British fare, like pies and fish, all served with lovely chunky chips! Meanwhile, they also offer a huge range of great traditional Chinese food, including the fattest, tastiest spring rolls ever! But the food isn't the only good thing about this place. The prices are very reasonable too, the staff are friendly and you never have to wait long to get served. Plus, there's a Bargain Booze and a Co-op on the same block of shops, so it's easy to grab a few cans or a bottle of wine to enjoy with your food!
