If you're planning to buy samples, make sure you do your research first. I made the mistake of purchasing an expensive bluestone sample and later decided to go with a different option. When I returned to the store to get a refund, they refused to accept the return, claiming the sample was scratched. However, the item was in the same condition as when I purchased it. I even have photos showing the condition of the sample before I brought it back. It was a disappointing experience, and I recommend understanding the store's return policy before making a purchase. read more

We went to Thompson to try to choose paving stones, fountains and landscape ground covers. We were overwhelmed with the choices. We did find a few fountains that we liked and after showing pictures to our in-laws they helped us select one that was nice to look at and would attract birds to bathe in it. We could not find paving material we liked and were very confused with the choices. No staff member approached us to assist us. We did like that the walkways were paved with various patterns and most labeled as to the materials used. If you are looking for a fountain, their selection can't be beat. If you have a better idea of what else you would like for your landscape, Thompson might be a good place to make your choices. There were just too many for us, but YMMV. read more

I went to Thompson's to buy a new bird bath to replace an old one that had been knocked over by a pair of raccoons. They had a solid selection and the customer service was excellent. Several employees approached me and asked if I needed help, and then when I did, they were easy to find (tip to the 1-star reviewers look for the people in the bright yellow reflective vests). The store is nice, big, and sells a lot of turf but the service is bad. I bought some pavers and had a few left over, bring them back return it after 3 days, never used it but have some sand on them. The store refused to return, even my landscaper offered to air blower clean them but they still didn't allow. read more

We were looking for a water fountain to add to our already existing Thompson's order of pavers. I knew nothing about fountains and that's when Ernesto came in to help me. He is very knowledgable about the different types of fountains and was able to guide me to the one that best fit our needs. Great place to buy landscape elements like edgers, brick, stone, pavers, plus garden art: quite an assortment of fountains and Japanese "stone" lanterns, metal sculptures, plants, etc. The scalloped edgers I was looking for were about half the price HD wanted for them. You find what you need (ask any of the yard workers) and take a photo of the price sign, then go to the office to pay; once you have the receipt and order ticket you find a yard worker who will load the order, drive it to your vehicle and load it in. Be sure you take into account the weight of what you're ordering; many of the products are heavy, so don't load more than your vehicle's suspension can take! read more

This place had hug selections of anything you want to build or remodel your home. I wish I had found it for prior projects but glad I found stuff for my small project. It was packed on Saturday morning and everything run smooth. I go around checking out the products that I wanted, took the picture of the price tag and info, brought into the office and paid for it. ONce done, go back outside and show the receipt to the person that worked they, they got the forklift, brought the products in the whole pallet to my car and I picked the one that I wanted and they helped loading them up. read more

No contact or discounts so I go here when I can get what I need else where. They have a great selection but the prices are at a premium.

I paid for and scheduled a delivery on 05-02-2021, the delivery was set for 05-05-2021. When we called about the delivery on the afternoon of 05-05, we were told the truck broke, so they rescheduled for Thursday. Thursday came and went, no delivery. So I called Friday morning, and was told it would be delivered today (05-07-2021). Well by 3pm, they had not called for the delivery, so I called them to find out what happened. A nice person answered and listened to my question, and then asked me to hold, so I waited. Eventually someone else comes on the line, and tells me that they are sorry but their loader broke down. Well surprise, surprise, surprise. First the truck problem, and no phone call; then the loader problem; and again no phone call. Not only did they not call to let us know, but apparently they expect me to believe that they had only one loader. How could a landscaping supply company this big have only one loader? Seriously? You could hardly supply the demand of a one house town with one loader, let alone the entire Sacramento valley. So I asked when their one and only loader would be fixed. She informed me that maybe by next Wednesday. Really? Next Wednesday? So this large landscape supply company, with only one loader, can't load trucks to deliver material? It is more likely that their dispatch and/or management decided that my order was small enough to shuffle around, so that they could make larger deliveries. She said she would refund my money, after explaining to me (and I quote) "shit happens". So basically they were happy to hold my money for a week, and blow me off. I have called someone else who seemed to want my business more. Customer service is not what it used to be, especially at Thompson Building Materials. *I know this happened last year, but the review was accidently left on their San Diego faucility's Yelp page. read more

BEWARE OF EXTRA CHARGES! I'm so glad I went inside the building to pay, otherwise I would not have seen the sign that states an additional 3% added to ALL orders due to rising gas prices. I was going to purchase a large ceramic planter for $110, and when it came time to pay I was charged $133 and change. I questioned the man, and asked how much I was being charged in taxes? He said $9 and change. Then I asked if that included the additional 3% and he said no, that was only the 9% in taxes. Except 9% doesn't seem right for that area!! Regardless, an additional $23 in taxes & extra charges seemed excessive, so I told him I had changed my mind and cancel everything! Be sure to check your receipts! read more

These people tried to charge me 20%, $185, for restocking a pallet of stone that I purchased. I bought the wrong pallet. Before I bought it because I wasn't sure if it was the right kind I asked 2 different people if it's returnable, they both said yes. But to charge a customer almost 200 dollars to have a person drive a forklift to my truck and pull a pallet out of my truck is unbelievable. Will never do business there again. Went to A and A stepping stone and got a pallet of stone for almost 300 dollars cheaper than this place. read more

Worst customer service from the outside plant sales can not understand how a customer asking for help was funny to two employees literally looked at me and giggled and walked away. This might be the place to go for building supplies or fountains. However, for plants...not so much. Even though they have a lot and a variety, they do not have a knowledgable staff that can give information and, most important, they have a no return policy. Even when we showed them what they sold us, no return, no replacement. This means the two bushes that I bought which were a mass of root bound knots are now ours regardless and we had to go to another nursery to buy two more (who by the way, guarantee their plants). read more

Ordered stone from this place 4 months ago paid $12,000 upfront because it's a special order. Chris was my point of contact. This guy is worthless. Every time you call to talk with him he's busy on the phone or just sick. Doesn't call back. They ended up selling my stone when it came in. They do not know how to run a stone yard. I would not buy stone from them again. They will take your money and never call or get what you ordered. How do you take someone's money and then sell the stone you purchased to someone else.
