This is a review of my Oct 2024 Colonoscopy with my new Gastroenterologist Dr. Edward Paredez at…read moreScripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. This is my 3rd Colonoscopy (and follows my DISASTROUS 2nd Colonoscopy in April 2021 with another San Diego Gastroenterologist). First, I would be surprised if there is a better Gastroenterologist in San Diego than Doctor Edward Paredez. After my disastrous 2021 Colonoscopy with another doctor (where I ended up on the floor of my bathroom bleeding out from cramping / explosive bloody diarrhea for almost 18 hours after my procedure) I told my PCP I was: 1.) Nervous as hell about EVER having another Colonoscopy; and 2.) did he have a REALLY GOOD Gastroenterologist he could recommend and he recommended me to Dr. Paredez. Dr. Paredez Assistant Cinthya (see below) scheduled me for a New Patient Video appointment. He listened carefully to my long-winded concerns and reluctance to having another Colonoscopy after 2021. He was patient, informative but calm and never rushed me. He suggested things he could do to lessen the possibility of a repeat of my 2021 nightmare. I felt less anxiety about another Colonoscopy after our appointment. On the day of the procedure, he was calm, listening carefully, friendly, walked me through the procedure, recovery, things for me to be aware of and resumption of my meds. Second, Cinthya is (I believe) the Assistant for Dr. Paredez. I think she is the glue that holds this busy doctor's practice together. She has no time for BS (and neither do I ). But she was very helpful whenever I had a question or issue. The rule is: LISTEN CAREFULLY TO CINTHYA. Third, I had not been to Scripps Memorial in La Jolla in decades and was shocked how it had grown. From walking in the front door trying to find where I was supposed to be and starting with the friendly and helpful Security Guards, the super friendly lady who checked me in until I arrived at my appointed place it was a super positive experience. But then I met the nurses who would get me setup and assist in my procedure AND THINGS BECAME WONDERFUL! Very busy helping me, signing me in, getting me changed, verifying I was who I was supposed to be, hooked up to the IV and monitoring equipment they were professional, polite and friendly but never stopped working. Because I had so much anxiety due to my 2021 Colonoscopy debacle, I was very anxious and joking as a defense mechanism. They kept working hard but joked right back with me and we were shortly laughing until it hurt but they continued checking me in and preparing me without missing a step. Fourth, when I woke up, I was treated carefully, thoughtfully, calmly and kindly. Because my Blood Sugar was low my primary Post Op nurse brought me a small snack and apple juice which was just what I needed! When my ride arrived, she wheeled me out and made sure I was carefully in my ride home. I am going to miss that nurse (and her horse she told me all about)! It is difficult for me to imagine a better procedure where EVERYONE from beginning to end were some of the best medical professionals I had ever encountered in my 70 years. I have always had good experiences at Scripps Mercy as they are part of my Medical Plan but this took things up to new levels of professionalism, care and friendliness! Dr. Paredez, Cinthya and team at Scripps Mercy La Jolla....THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

This review is for my wife who is far too kind to ever give less than a stellar review. First off,…read moresitting in the lobby, it came across to me as a scope factory. I forget how many individuals they scope in a day, but it seemed like quite a lot. Bless her heart, my wife has vented to me a number of times that after the procedure, the doctor did not wait for her to come near enough out of her anesthesia to discuss the results. He did not allow me or anyone to be with her to hear his comments. He did not address the big issues for which she was scoped - critical conditions he was to observe and treat/or not treat - depending upon what he observed during the procedure. He came across to her as curt and rude, impatient, perturbed that she had asked him a question trying to get the key results - which he did not answer. He spoke briefly to her and was gone. She had to schedule AND PAY FOR a follow-up visit to hear the results for the issues for which she was being scoped and biopsied for in the first place - including whether her symptoms were treated, if so how so, and the biopsy results. To have to pay for a follow up appointment is unheard of for these procedures. So virtually no post proceedure follow through, then no biopsy results call, no info, no nada. Cept you take the time and money to come in for a follow-up appointment for them to get more of your money. Adding insult to injury, they keep coming up with new significant charges months and months after the procedure and follow-up appointment, billing for additional fees. We wish you the best with them.
