Calm, understanding, and most importantly she informed me with all the information I needed to get through those 9 months of pregnancy! She made me feel comfortable and completely prepared for delivery! I've recommended her to several new moms! And will continue to recommend her!

In September 2020, Dr. Dickerhoff was scheduled to remove the IUD she inserted in December of…read more2019. During the procedure she gave me no preparation that she would be dilating my cervix, but proceeded with a device that forces it open anyway. I was screaming in pain and asked several times was my IUD stuck or lodged? She repeatedly said no it wasn't and that my cervix was just tight. The pain was indescribable, and yet she insisted that it wasn't stuck. There were 2 others in the room with her and they were just as cold and insensitive. I asked her to stop because of the pain, and she sated they would just wait until I was ready. I told her I wouldn't be ready to go through this pain again. It was overwhelmingly unsettling that neither she, nor the other 2 nurses who were with her showed any type of concern or compassion for the excruciating pain I was in. She continued to say it wasn't stuck and told me to talk to my primary, and come back Monday so she could put me to sleep, and then remove it. No thank you! I instead found new doctors from a different health group who are kind, compassionate, caring and were able to explain. They also explained any and all health procedures that were going to perform during their examining me. My new doctors told me immediately that the IUD was indeed jammed in my cervix, and as a result I had to have a DNC so it could be removed. This was the 2nd dnc, in less than a year, that I had to have as a result of procedures gone wrong by SSM gynecologists. My experience with SSM gynecologists have been very traumatizing and very disappointing. It is a scary thing to feel like your life is on the line while in a doctor's care.

I feel it's important to share my experience. I started going to heartland health care when Dr…read moreFoster was there but he's retired. Absolutely a saint of a man! Every woman needs a Dr Foster I started seeing dr Sammons with my second pregnancy. Since seeing her I raised herpes concerns to Dr Sammons for several years that I felt were entirely dismissed. I have had the same sexual partner for 11 years, I have always practiced safe sex, and I routinely get STI screenings throughout my life. Because of concerns I had, I asked to be tested every visit over the past 4 years. Based on the conversations during my appointment, I left believing my concerns had been addressed and that the testing I requested had been ordered. When my lab work came back negative, I assumed herpes had been included because I didn't know how to interpret the different tests. I had no idea that I had not actually been tested for HSV all this time. Years later, after still feeling uneasy, I sought care from another OB-GYN at heartland--Jane Vessel. Jane listened to my concerns, ordered the HSV test I had originally requested, and I was absolutely devastated to learn that I tested positive. I can't help but wonder whether taking my concerns seriously from the beginning could have given me answers sooner and allowed me to make more informed decisions. Instead, I lost years of information that can never be recovered. I understand generally no one can say exactly when I contracted the virus. However, I have practice safe sex, I routinely receive STI screenings especially between sex partners, and I sought testing when I believed I had been exposed. Had my concerns been taken seriously and the test I requested actually been ordered--or had I at least been clearly informed that it wasn't--I would have had a much better understanding of my health and a narrower timeframe for when this infection may have occurred. Patients deserve clear communication about what tests are and are not being ordered, especially when they specifically request them. Being heard isn't enough if your concerns aren't followed through with. I hope sharing my experience encourages patients to verify what tests are being performed and providers to communicate more clearly so no one else has to experience the uncertainty and heartbreak I have. We shouldn't have to discover years later that our concerns weren't fully addressed. Additionally, Dr Sammons seemed dismissive about other health concerns throughout my pregnancy, and insistent about birth control every visit.
