Classes began in September 1952, with first- and second-graders attend ingold Schaumburg Center School at Schaumburg and Roselle roads; third- and fourth-graders attending Sunderlage School on Higgins Road; fifth- through seventh-graders using an Elk Grove School District facility on a tuition basis, and eighth-graders attending a Palatine District 15 school on a tuition basis. In December 1952, a special election gave the Board of Education approval to purchase and construct a school site for District 54. Schaumburg School (now the Early Learning Center) opened Jan. 10, 1954, with three teachers teaching 87 students in first through eighth grade.

The classrooms were all different, set up to serve different teachers and classes. Some classrooms still had chalkboards. The cafeteria worked great to serve as a student lounge and hold lunch. James B. Conant High School is a great school Academically and shows great ccommitment to its athletics and activities. I highly recommend James B. Conant High School!

I can't blame the…read moreschool- even back in the 70s when it was new they did some pretty neat stuff, and had some great teachers! Mr. Whitman was my 1st grade teacher- he took the time to teach us all how to play chess! He was totally "searching for Bobby Fischer!" We had great big vinyl chess boards, big pieces, and he'd get on the overhead projector and have this little chess board transparency, and he'd show us the moves. At the end of 1st grade we were playing legitimate chess games, even if we were too young to understand any real chess strategy. Mr. Clair used to tell us great stories in 2nd grade- everybody loved that guy! Too bad the school was so stuffed we got stuck taking classes in "the mobiles." Mobile homes- haha. Mr. Lucier was a nice principal- he played ukulele at school events all the time! I was sent to his office lots of times for getting in trouble, and he always pointed out the nice picture he had on his wall that my well behaved older sister had painted when she went to Dirksen. Miss Schumacher was HOT! They had a "gifted" program where some of us selected few would be picked up by the 'tard cart and taken to a separate school- all the dist. 54 grade schools fed the program. I hated getting teased for being picked up by the stubby bus for that, and the actual gifted program was no fun. The teachers there tried so hard to engage us it felt demeaning somehow... I knock one star off for Mrs. Nank. That fat old battle-ax would beg cookies out of the lunches of her 4th graders! Worse- she's beg back and shoulder massages from us! I was so completely disgusted by her behavior... Words can't describe.

OH MY GOD- talk about preaching to the choir- it was SCHAUMBURG FUCKING HIGHSCHOOL IN 1988- ground zero in all the nation for the giant suburban hair I HATED! As serious as the resulting out-of-school suspension and Saturday schools (2 of 'em!) were, I had trouble holding back the laughter! At least I had a week off to practice Foosball at "the Barn" and Saturday school locker cleaning duty resulted in me getting my first "Schaumburg Saxon Pride Award..." the one I stole from some award-winning kid's locker who didn't turn the dial to lock it! The school goes from pre K-8th grade which is a great thing since the kids will be in one school until high school. It is a private school so it does cost quite a bit but it really is an exceptional school. Whether or not it's worth the money I can't really say. Personally, I would cringe at the price tag if Einstein himself were teaching my child. They just built a new building this year and it is amazing. So much better than the old building they were in. Lots of room and the capability to have more students, classes and teachers. Some pros: The facility is wonderful, the teachers are great and really care about the kids. Reading and math are based on ability, not on grade. So, if your 5-6 year old is reading like a nine-year old, they will be put in with those readers. The school isn't even "grade" based. there is no "1st grade", etc. It is level based. They have a GREAT fine arts program. Extensive art, music and drama programs that you won't find in a public school. Some cons: There is a bit of an elitist attitude there at times but I think it comes more from parents than the staff. There is a bit of communication problem with the school and the parents. There just doesn't seem to be a cohesive way for parents to get the information they need. If you're considering sending your child here, definitely sign up for a visit and a shadow day. Personally, as long as we can afford it, my son will be going to this school.

I recently graduated from SAA, and looking back just a couple years, I have to say that SAA has…read morechanged me a lot. I feel more confident and motivated, and I have made some amazing friends. One of the things about SAA that makes it unique is that the fact that you will do as well as the work you put in. As long as you take advantage of the local resources and have some self motivation to do well, it isn't hard to master the schoolwork and beyond. The teachers are willing to help if you are willing to ask, even when it comes down to academics beyond the classroom. For example, when I needed help for my High School application, or improving my SAT scores, my teachers were glad to lend me a hand. Also, I have to give props to the excelled math program that SAA offers. Where I initially did not enjoy math as a subject at all, SAA motivated me to improve my math ability. I eventually became part of the Math Team and found a passion for mathematics. SAA was a great choice for me, and I got a lot out of my experience.

The work is about one grade level higher, but our daughter seemed to be thriving in the intense curriculum and looked like she was having fun everyday! I really appreciate the small classroom size and one on one attention. This may not be a school for every child or parent but if you want a good discipline in academics and if you say the safety is first; this is it. Another plus for me is how clean and organized the school is. I was happy to see such a clean facility. Lastly, the teachers were wonderful, as well as the whole staff! My youngest one is in 3rd grade gifted program and loves it. I am very lucky to have such school where my kids are nurtured and challenged.
