Truth be told, if this was a food, more specifically pizza, review, it would be five stars. This is modest deep dish pizza, not as grandiose as Chicago or Detroit, but unquestionably delicious. It was the second of three pizzas tried the day I visited (Luce and Ursa were the others) and it was our favorite. We happened to be here New Years Eve, amongst a great staff that were accommodating and friendly, and listening to, presumably, a talented local artist. I'd like to recuse myself of absolute authenticity here as I have done with other nearby breweries I have not had as many visits to justify the veracity of my arbitrary stars. The beers I tried were fine. Not great, not bad, just middle of the road. This probably was my only reason to cast aside one star during this review, though I hope to return and have my mind and taste buds blown for my next visit. Definitely worth putting on your to-do list if you're in Duluth or Superior, and easily worth the moderate cab fare to get here if coming from the former. read more

Best pizza in Superior. We get this almost every week. The sausage on pizza is small crumbles though, which I don't love. But all the other toppings are amazing and the crust is soft and comforting, like laying your head down on a pillow after a hard day's work. read more

First time here, we didn't want to be seated right next to the music so the host took us to a small room away from the musician. Before we sat we asked to sit at the bar since it felt a little awkward in the little room. We started with a couple taps, I don't remember all we tried but they all had good, distinct taste. I don't think we drank the same beer twice and we had a handful. Just wanted to try them all. The pizza was great, we typically like a thinner crust but this crust is some of the thickest and doughiest we've ever had. We ordered a pepperoni and green olive with extra sauce. Seemed a little light on the toppings but still had great flavor. If you're staying in Duluth it's a bit of a drive but it's worth it. Maybe bring a sober driver so you can try more of the taps. read more

We were in the mood for deep dish, their photos online sold us. Being from out of town I was pleasantly surprised to find out they were located in a old train station. The pizza was a deepish dish, and was excellent. The person I had dinner with is a pizza expert and he loved it. The place was busy but had plenty of seats available and food came quickly. Been frequenting The Thirsty Pagen for a few years and have always loved dining there. A few months ago I had a not so great experience. I never write reviews and never throw away pizza, but...We ordered a "Garden Pizza" for takeout and after eating one miserable piece each, we had to stop. Something was seriously off (old/rancid garlic?). After a few days a manager called and made good on the situation with a gift card for a replacement. I won't be getting a Garden Pizza however! One of the more unique breweries I have been to! I'm usually pretty picky about pizza and theirs blew me away. I got the Derailed pizza, which boasts 11 toppings, and the 10" was more than enough for one person. The brewery is in the old Soo Line Depot so it's a really interesting space to sit in. As expected, Thirsty Pagan has character, and the gritty surroundings in Superior, WI have shaped that character. The exterior has been camouflaged to resemble any other upscale brew pub. The ramshackle interior, with its strange, compartmented rooms, amazingly small bar, awkward stage, and no TVs, reveals what I hope is a work in progress to restore the venue. There are two reasons to visit: Beer, variation and quality; and, excellent Music. Food is average pub fare, and as expected in WI, covered with a thick layer of cheese. You want stuffed mushrooms? Yes you may have a large plate of melted cheese sprinkled with mushrooms stuffed with? You guessed right: CHEESE! Service seemed OK. Bartender was competent and will happily guide you through the beer menu and recommend cheesy food choices, especially deep dish pizza. Being a thin crust fan, I could not love it, but managed to finish most of a 10 inch pie. read more

A friend and I visited for lunch on a busy fall Saturday with our two hungry and cranky sons, age 3. We were seated immediately, placed orders right away, and an employee unexpectedly came over and gave the kids toys and suckers. The drinks came promptly and pizza was so delicious. I know the current staffing challenges make it harder on the people who work in the service industry, but you'd never know it at Thirsty Pagan - the staff handled the lunch rush like pros. We stopped here and met some family here. They had good custom brewed beer and food here. This building is an old train depot so it is a weird layout with several small separate rooms because this building wasn't designed to be a bar/restaurant. They even had live music and we like to support live music. We enjoyed the food and drink here. My absolute favorite pizza place I've ever visited and one of my very favorite restaurants. Pizza is great, beer is great, prices are great, staff is great, restaurant is great and the ambiance is great. The only negative I have is that I live thousands of miles away and only get there when I visit on vacation. It is a highlight of every trip that everyone in my family always looks forward to. I cannot recommend it enough, I hesitate to be this honest because while it's never empty, it's also never as crowded as I think it should be. My husband is a pizza nut. That might be an understatement actually. Pizza connoisseur? At any rate, he's been raving about the Thirsty Pagan's pizza since he had it a few months ago and finally dragged me there to try it myself. It was good. :-) (Darn it, he was right!) The pizza reminded me a lot of Chicago deep dish in that the crust is really nice and buttery and develops this beautiful crust to it. But the pizza is not as deep as deep dish -- more like pan pizza from Pizza hut (but only in thickness -- sooooo way way better than Pizza Hut). We had sausage, which was a bit on the spicy side. Pizzas are served right in their pans to your table. Super delicious and worth the short trip from Duluth. We also ordered a soft pretzel, which was good and came with a most delicious creamy mustard sauce. That was so good that I actually hung onto it and used it for dipping sauce for my pizza (total props to the guy who cleared our pretzel plate and slid the ramekin off the plate because he KNEW I wanted to keep the mustard!). Beer-wise, they have lots of options and they are all decent. I had the Lawn Chair lager, which was a light lager that was totally tasty and fine. That said, I did feel like their beer list was a bit fill in the blank -- like they felt they had to have a lager and an amber and an option on nitro, etc. Kind of like they were trying to have all of the varieties they felt they should. But everything we had was a good rendition of what it was supposed to be. Just not beer that blew my mind, but perfectly acceptable, good-quality brew. Totally dug the decor, which was mostly made up of old beer signs. Awesome. In all, thumbs up. Sure we will be back. Went here with my family, while visiting for a graduation. We came to the restaurant with a party of 6 people and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We ordered 2 pizzas- a medium (13") half cheese only/half pepperoni, and a large (16") TPB Special. This was the perfect amount of food for our entire group. The pizza's are deep dish style, but aren't too thick. I'd say they are halfway between deep dish and regular hand-tossed thickness. To me, this is perfect and allows you to eat and enjoy the sauce and toppings without being overwhelmed by the bulk of a heavy, grease-laden bread crust that you find at other places. The first thing I noticed about the pizza crust at Thirsty Pagan is that it is actually a nice real pizza dough crust- *not* (thank God) a bread style crust. I can't stand it when you are eating a pizza crust that tastes and feels like a giant piece of bread filled with grease. The crust at Thirsty Pagan is NOT bready, but rather proper pizza pie dough crust. Thank you!! Second, the toppings were very enjoyable as well. The TPB Special had sausage with a slight tinge of spiciness that was perfect. I loved the whole flavor and the sauce too. My review is primarily about the food, since I didn't try any of the beers. However, two of the others in our group did, and they reported they were enjoyable. The staff and servers at the restaurant were kind folks who attended our table efficiently and with a smile. The manager (owner?) talked to us when we arrived and found out we were from Arizona and had previously lived in Alberta Canada. We had a nice chat and he made us feel right at home. The servers were fast and pleasant to deal with. They made good suggestions and everything was accurate with our orders and our bill at the end of the night. Overall a great experience. Fascinating place. An old train depot. Lots of rooms, little nooks and crannies, some interesting history. And you know what? The train track is literally 5-10 ft outside the back door. Train runs slow, likely cause its a freight train but you can see it outside the windows. Very cool. Upon entering we were greeted by the server, who was smiling and welcoming. We started off with the beach bread. Very tasty appetizer. Recommend if you like blue cheese and bacon although those flavors are in the bread, they dont dominate. The wife was recommended by a friend to try Lawn Chair. She loved it. I had the Burntwood Black which was very good. Eventually we had the Buff Za pizza which was excellent! We love buffalo sauce and flavor. Very yummy. While we were there, the place got busy. A guy came by to talk to us and after a little bit , we realized he was Steve the owner who is friends with some of our friends who live locally. He was very kind and made sure we had what we needed. I later switched to Lawn Chair and while its listed as a cream ale, it seems closer to a lager. Either way its fantastic and its sessionable. Meaning to me, its an easy going beer with a mellow aftertaste that you can drink all day. Later at our daughters hockey game, vs the local college, Steve showed up and said hi as hes friends with our friends who have a daughter on the same college hockey team. Nice guy as he remembered mine and my wife's names several hours later at the hockey rink. So in summary, Nice owner who cares about his product and his customers, excellent food, good beer. We enjoyed our lst time visit Thirsty Pages. the prices were a little pricey. the singer was good as well as our waiter. We had a $39.95 pizza as well as $17.95 gluten free pizza as well as the 4 beverages. the total bill was $79.95. When the waiter came with the bill and aluminum foil. We asked for a box, he said we couldn't give us one. One of the people in our party (- does that mean we have to finish our pizza here. ) We inquired why the people behind us got a box. -- The waiter says they get it to go, so they will have a box for leftovers. (I guess they know the drill.) By the way - the foil didn't even cover the leftover pizza. I guess we will go back to Sammy's Pizza - they have no rules for the Patrons.
