The Red Door Books Art and Gifts

The Red Door Books Art and Gifts

Used books, new books, kids books, story times, local art, Red Door is a nice stop to satisfy a…read morebook craving or a mini-viewing of local art. It doesn't look like a traditional bookstore, with its beach-colored walls and light wood floors and bookcases. You can see the walls here, unlike some bookstores with every bit of wall space occupied. The aisles are widely spaced and the bookshelves, while full, are not crammed. From a distance, the beaded curtain in the back corner looks like just another case of books. It's eye-catching and blends in well to the rest of the decor. There's a large table and some chairs in that corner, and the children's section has the cutest kid chairs. The books cover all genres and are mostly used books but with some new titles also. In either case, new or used, there's enough of everything for any interest, but not so much as to be overwhelming. If you want to test-read a new genre, it'll be easy to find a book to do that here. The section of books by NC authors is easy to find, but I thought the selection was a little thin. On the other hand, the staff must have every book title in this place memorized, because at least three people came in looking for something and were led right to it. This is a nice bookstore, and easy to browse. It seems more a bookstore for quickly grabbing something to read rather than one for spending time going through stacks. Sometimes that's enough. If you have the time, though, it's a worth a visit just to absorb that beach-vibe.

From the owner: As the only independent book store in Alamance County, we offer new, used and hard to find books…read moreand gifts as well as art, jewelry and crafts made by NC artists. From brand new releases to best sellers and prize winners, we stay stocked with some of the best books now and from years gone by. We've got hot-off-the-press books in a wide variety of genres, topics and age ranges. We offer books on local history and books by local authors. And if you can't find what you're looking for, our knowledgable staff will be happy to find what you're looking for or special order it for you. One thing that many visitors notice right away is that we're not just any used book store. We love books. And we want people who love books. People who want to know more. Explorers, thinkers, creators, doers. Guess how many copies of 50 Shades of Grey we have? Zero. Guaranteed. We like good books. Okay, so "good" is relative, but we do our best. We've got the new stuff, we've got the classics, we've got hidden gems and maybe even books you didn't know you had to have until you found them. Come in and discover amazing original creations from artists and authors around the entire state of North Carolina. Painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, writers and craftspeople. Custom handmade jewelry and gift items. Help support outstanding local writers and artists, because you could find a gift at a big box store, but you could also get something that was made with love in North Carolina.

Would a historic downtown area be complete without a quaint, locally flavored bookshop? No, it…read moreclearly would not! And thus downtown Hillsborough is indeed complete thanks to Purple Crow Books. It is a small, cozy bookshop that carries all your favorite big name authors, bestsellers, and featured book club works as well. But what clearly sets this establishment apart is the VAST selection of works by Hillsborough authors! Who knew so many published authors hail from this small North Carolina town? This guy surely did not, but I was very impressed and charmed by this fact. There is also a separate section devoted to North Carolina authors (hello, Nicholas Sparks!). You gotta love the strong local representation! Off the side of the main room, there are two smaller sections, one of which showcases numerous gently used books for 50% off and the second of which is devoted to children's books and games. Plus there are some crafty greeting cards for sale as well. All in all, definitely worth checking out as you stroll through Hillsborough. Plus Cup A Joe is conveniently located across the street so you can get your caffeine fix to accompany your literary adventure!
