Surprisingly good in such a remote place. The setting is interesting, in a historical building, which used to be a school, hospital, catholic academy and now a vacation resort. Food is cheap and seizable, but don't picture a low end take out place. I liked the steak, cooked right, good beef. Dinner roll is a must. read more

Soooo delicious! My husband scouted this out on Yelp before we went to the Elephant Rocks State Park. We saw the video of how they grind their own flour for all of their homemade breads (and cinnamon rolls!)! Obviously whatever they're doing is worth it. Our burgers and sandwiches were divine. I had the ham sandwich (with bacon and a fried egg!) and the toasted bread played a starring role. Our cinnamon roll connoisseur was a big fan, too - and happy we were able to get the very last plain one with cream cheese frosting. We decided to stop and try it out for lunch after hiking at Elephant Rocks. Fantastic small buffet! Staff was friendly, food was fantastic! Save some room and visit the creamery across the hall. I would have given it 5 stars, but the high chair didn't have any straps so my husband and I had to take turns keeping our 18 month old in the seat. read more

This is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. We stumbled upon this place on a road trip through rural Missouri. A local butcher provides the meat, the bread is made in house, and the grain is milled on site, too. Food is delicious, service is friendly. You will not be disappointed. read more

Went tonight and ordered the fried pickles as an app. They were good, just seemed like you didn't get much for what you paid for. I ordered a pork tenderloin sandwich and fries, and both were delicious. My husband had the buffet, which included chicken, roast beef, potatoes and gravy, and pasta along with a beautiful salad bar. My mother in law has the turkey rueben and said it was great. All three of us said we would come back. Only down fall was the waitress, who was very nice, seemed overworked and the customer service wasn't the best. read more

I stop by Thee Abbey Kitchen/Arcadia Academy whenever I can. This is a family owned business with hardworking and kind owners and staff. They do a fair amount of business for lunch and dinner on the weekends. Their sweet rolls are amazing as they bake them fresh everyday along with their wonderful bread. This is also a bed and breakfast and I have enjoyed staying there a number of times. The breakfast they serve is great. On late Sunday mornings they serve a brunch with a great French toast, biscuits n gravy, bacon and will make an omelet to your liking. I have also enjoyed the tour and just relaxing and walking the beautiful grounds. read more

From the outside, the building looks almost derelict, but don't be turned off. This little restaurant sits in an old building that used to be a Catholic girls' high school. The dining room is a little austere and short on ambience, in keeping with the location's tradition. The homemade bread is the best I've ever had. My bacon cheeseburger was huge, if a tad overcooked, and the fries were amazing. We didn't have room for dessert, but we did step across the hall to the Creamery and couldn't resist getting a scoop of caramel apple frozen custard to take home. If you're in this part of Missouri for sightseeing at any of the nearby state parks (Taum Sauk, Johnsnon's Shut-Ins, and Elephant Rocks are all within a few miles), this is a fantastic place to relax and have a delicious meal! read more

If you are anywhere near the Abbey Kitchen (within 50 miles) you have to visit this place. My family shared the Prime Rib and the Chicken Alfredo. Both were delicious and expertly prepared, but I've never had a baked potato or carrots as good as those at the Abbey Kitchen. Also, the homemade desserts were excellent. The Coconut Cream Pie and the ice cream alone were worth the drive. read more

Went with a large group and most of us had the brunch buffet. Fantastic biscuits and gravy! Nice touch with the homemade chicken cordon bleu. All of the food was great and the service was good too. After you eat, take the time to walk around the buildings. There's a beautiful grotto in back and other interesting things to see. Place is full of history. I'll definitely be going back! read more

The soup was kind of watery but the flavor was still rich. I had some of my sister's fries and they tasted homemade and fresh as well. Wonderful find after a morning at Elephant Rocks with a friend - so glad we stopped. Family-owned and they were super sweet. Very accomodating - they had recently changed part of their menu from what we'd seen online and my (vegan) friend mentioned being disappointed they no longer had their mahi mahi option, but said it was no problem she'd order a salad. When they came back to take our order they went out of their way to offer/make a fish sandwich for her. I had the chicken club which was delicious - perfectly cooked with just the right amount of everything It was on homemade bread that was incredibly good - apparently they even mill the wheat there. Homemade chips were perfect. Fried pickles were yummy and a huge basket. They have all kinds of interesting sodas and floats that I didn't get to try this time. Also didnt get to try the ginormous and amazing looking cinnamon rolls. But could not leave without trying the homemade ice cream which was also delicious. Everything seems to be made with love. Very cool building/property, had a great time walking around as well as checking out the shop upstairs. Would like to go back and do the tour when it's warmer. Definitely stop in if you're in the area - it's a place you don't want to miss! read more

We stayed at the abbey and had dinner and breakfast too. Dinner was solid. Reasonably priced. The mushrooms were the standout. The burgers were good. The breakfast buffet was the standout - particularly the biscuits. I wish they served them for dinner too. It was too cold to try the creamery, but you can bet we will be back next time we are in the area. Overall great job and worth driving to if you are hiking in the area. read more

I had heard this place was hit and miss. That was just what I experienced. The waitress was not very attentive and the food took awhile. I went with the soup and salad bars that were endless trips. My food was good, but my cousin got a sandwich that was all gristle. She couldn't touch it with a knife. read more

We ate here for lunch after a night of camping from St. Louis. The menu was mostly sandwiches and there is an unlimited soup and salad bar, which is small but almost everything is homemade and delicious (even had pomegranate seeds!). I was so full but couldn't resist the pumpkin ice cream that was a very generous 1 scoop and was so delicious. The building is very cool as well with lots of artifacts from when it was a school (and now I'm finding out it is also a bit haunted). DEFINITELY make this your lunch stop if you're in the area. read more

For those who haven t recently been to Arcadia Academy, it is quite excellent! I came from Idaho to visit this area. I stayed in one of the hostel rooms. During my visit, I received EXCELLENT care and service. If you would like to add a little more history to your visit, this is definitely the place to come. Here at Christmas time, the combination of quality and festive atmosphere, makes it feel like home away from home. It was a comfortable family-friendly location. Our servers and hostesses were kind and very hospitable at Thee Abbey Kitchen. Their lunch menu was delectable. During my visit I ate at the salad bar. With the fresh greens, vegetables, and other toppings made it easy for me to make a salad just how I liked it. (I am very particular when it comes to salads.) The soups were hot, which was so nice to warm my insides from a cold winter day. The breads were made fresh each day, the best I had ever eaten. Their cheese stollens, cinnamon rolls, are huge! They taste wonderful! On Saturday, they had their hot dinner buffet. Home tasting meals added to my stay. They have such a beautiful historic building they are working to restore. What a neat place! They have events that go on throughout the months that make it enjoyable. Nearby are many attractions to keep you busy. This is the place to come to. The food was great! The service was even better!! The atmosphere was great, as the dining room is the dining hall for the old academy. It's a great place with a lot of history and architecture! They also have a bakery with some great pastries! They also make their own ice cream, but I have not tried it yet. They are currently building a new entry with a handicap ramp (sept 2015). They are hard working owners that are doing a great job at preserving history and restoring the buildings and grounds!! read more

This was our 2nd visit to the Abbey Kitchen. Unlike the other posters, we had the Saturday night buffet. The Saturday evening buffet features fried chicken and runs from 5-8pm. Like our 1st visit the buffet featured 6 items plus the salad bar. The salad bar is ok, the buffet is skimpy. The roast beef was ok but cold. It sat at the end so maybe the hot water doesn't reach there. There were a few pieces of fried chicken. Hot since it has just been refreshed with 5 pieces. No spicy chicken. We had arrived at 6pm-ish and five pieces of spicy chicken appeared at around 6:25pm so it wasn't available for us. Didn't try the mashed potatoes or gravy. The potatoes looked like they had been there since 5pm. The green beans were good but salty. The corn was tasty. Utensils were skimpy. All that was available were folks and soap spoons. Similar to our 1st visit, service was slow. The waitress appeared three times. 1st to take our drink order. A 2nd time after I waved her over for a tea refill and the 3rd to bring the check. Never did bring the tea refill for my wife. Guess she forgot, The buffet is expense considering very few options are available. The tea is $1.95/glass with maybe refills and the 5 or 6 item buffet is $10.95. Thinking our 1st visit was maybe an off night we decided to try it again this evening. Not likely to do it again. Maybe for lunch someday, but not again for the buffet. read more

Very disappointed when I stopped at the Abby yesterday for lunch. I arrived shortly after one o'clock and was approached by my server and given a menu and was brought my beverage. That was the last time I saw my server for 10 minutes. I ordered the chicken fried steak and was told they were out. Would have been better to have been told that when given the menu . Not wanting to wait another 10 minutes to order I ordered from the soup, salad and bread bar. The lettuce was not crisp but it wasn't wilted either, the potato soup was billed as creamy but it was extremely watery. On the plus side the chunks of potato were large and numerous. There was no bread and when I asked for crackers I was told again that they were out but the server said she thought they had some Ritz crackers. I said that would be fine, another long wait ensued and then I was given a half sleeve of Ritz crackers. I asked for a plate so I could remove a few and not waste the rest of the sleeve . I did not see any one overseeing the dining room and the servers need to be trained better and communications between the wait staff and kitchen needs to be established. read more
