WOW, What a pleasant and wonderful surprise of a find. We happened to be going this way after car…read moreshopping and found this pub. It looked like Yelpers had enjoyed it so we hoped that it was going to be worth the stop. It was. A lot of the pubs I've found lately have all become commercialized and become a bit "cookie cutter." They have the same items on the menu, carry the same beers and generally almost start looking the same. Well, the Malt Shovel does not. Not only is their menu unique, it seemed to have specials of the day. I choose a meat pie that with beer in it and my husband chose a different meat and potatoes dish. We started with some fried tempura shrimp that was a surprise because it was just as light and tasty as could be. We ate that pretty quickly. The entrees are pretty hefty and I believe we could have shared, but in the end my husband liked his dish better so it worked out. Ironically we came here quite by accident but it was our anniversary that night and with trying to find a car hadn't had time to properly plan dinner but it worked out because the meal made it feel pretty special. I would have liked to have tried a dessert but having no space had to forgo. In the end it turned out it was less than 10 miles away from home so we probably will be back often for good homecooked like meals!

I would (and have) reccomend the maly shovel to anyone who would be passing. The chips alone are worth travelling to it for

I had to laugh when I read the first review for the Peacock Inn!! We have had a couple of meals…read morethere and I have to say, the food is delicious and very nicely presented. The pub itself is in the lovely, out-of-the-way village of Oxhill and is a delightfully typical old-English place that has been nicely fitted out. The second time we went, we were squeezed onto a tiny little table for two but we didn't mind since the food had been so great. Now back to why I laughed at the earlier review We too were greeted by the other lady who must spend her entire life being grumpy! She was so quintessentially miserable when she greeted us that neither of us could resist a snigger as we turned away from her! She must take lessons in being fed up and she gets an A Star from me for her performance! That being said, the remainder of the staff were charming and very attentive which covered for her abruptness. Some might not be so amused though and I would just warn you not to feel too cosy as you arrive, especially if you haven't booked or you are in any way near to the time that they stop serving. All in all, worth a visit if you are in the area but watch out for the wasp-chewer!! I was tempted to give the place a 3 Star because of her but the food was too good for that it had to be a 4. It would have been a 5

They even have a raised bed garden behind the inn. The inn is in a stunningly beautiful building in the stunningly beautiful village of Upper Oddington, east of Stowe on the Wold. We had a 7:00 pm reservation and were seated immediately in the period dining room. The patrons consisted of local residents at the bar, inn guests and other travelers. The dining room was very clean. The wait staff was very attentive, sharpely dressed and very polite. Norman, the owner, explained the difference between cask and keg beers and allowed me sample several ales and ciders. I selected the cask drawn amber ale from North Cotswold Brewery. It had excellent flavour and a clean finish. Norman also checked on our meal several times. He was very engaging and fun to talk with. Next we ordered dinner. My wife had the ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce, chips, sautéed mushroom and onion rings. The steak was prepared exactly as ordered. The peppercorn sauce was so good she used it on her chips also. The mushroom had excellent flavour and complimented the steak and peppercorn sauce. She had a 1/2 pint of Thatchers Golden Cider, which was also very good. I ordered the special, crispy pork belly with a sweet patato purée, fondant potatoes and roasted new carrots. Everything was excellent and complimented each other. We finished the evening with coffee and the sticky toffee pudding. It was moist, flavourful, drizzled with a caramel sauce and accompanied by a dollop of excellent vanilla ice cream. We didn't need it but finished the whole thing. My wife said it's the best dessert she has ever had. We had an excellent meal and a wonderful time in a lovely setting. People from Stowe, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Camden and even Cheltenham need to get out there. I would go every week if I didn't live 3,000 miles away.

Gourmet desserts. Salmon encruste was excellent as was the whole Sole. Tried a standard pub dish, beef and mushroom pie and it was heavenly homemade with a delicate crust. Plus the owner is an oenophile, so there's a very nice wine list including an extensive list of wines by the glass. Friendly staff. What an unexpected treat and a great blend of traditional and new. Well done!!!
