We got stumbling distance to one of the best pubs in the country. This place is well-regarded by everyone in the region. I've met people here who give up walking distance to their local to drive here and have a good time. That says something. My first night here I made friends, and each time I've been here since I find myself in good company either with neighbors we've met before, or people who know we're new to the area and want to welcome us. I can't begin to tell you how often a quick pint before dinner turns into a long session at King's Arms. I wouldn't have it any other way. These guys truly embrace the concept of being the center of village activity. No TVs, no WiFi, these things distract from the community. You come here to interact with your friends and neighbors, enjoy a good beer, and enjoy living in the company of others. They regularly have events to bring the village out. The most impressive of which was the dinner they hosted on the night of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. They served the exact 10-course menu served in first class that evening, and requested everyone bust out their tuxedos and dresses to mark the occasion in grand fashion. It was a remarkable evening. One disappointment, since I have to list one to feel as though I am being fair, is the wine list. We love the temperanillo, but really none of the others. But we're not here to drink wine, we're here to be social! It makes me a little sad that we don't have this type of drinking culture in the US. If you're not an alcoholic, you're not likely be on a first-name basis with the bartenders at a local watering hole. That's why I love walking in here; everyone knows everyone else, they're always happy to see you, they know what you drink, they pour a tasty pint, and are genuinely good people. I dig it.

I've eaten at Michelin star restaurants that haven't had steak as tender and succulent as what we had here. The ambiance was romantic, quirky, and quiet, perfect for a night out. We started with a potato and leek soup and the Welsh rarebit. The soup was good, not exceptional, but good, and the rarebit was tasty. We continued with the special, which was a hanging skewer with melted garlic butter, corn on the cob, and chips. I can honestly say that I have never had such a delicious, perfectly cooked and seasoned beef skewer outside of Greece or Spain. It was an absolute experience simply eating it. One of those rare dishes that makes you pause and close your eyes at the sheer pleasure of the perfect taste. I never wanted it to end. My husband had the same experience with his assorted beef platter. The medallions were so tender you understand what the phrase "melt in your mouth" means. I only wish we had room for dessert, as the dessert menu looked utterly luscious. But we will be back, and soon. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

Just tried calling to book a table for tomorrow (called at 14.15 as website said they close at…read more14.30), phone was answered by a very rude individual who told me they were too busy with lunchtime and to call back later. I asked if they'd be open to answer the phone later and he shouted 'the pub is open all day I'm very busy' and hung up on me! So won't be dining there then. Sorry, but first impressions really matter - if you're too busy to answer the phone (the only way to book) then DON'T or implement a different method of booking tables. Don't recommend it, they were horrible and obviously too busy to be bothered.

The pub was amazing and quirky. It was all of different levels with the restaurant being an extension out the back. The pub had the log fire going with antiques all around - even some quirky games too! The allowed dogs inside the pub and in the beer garden. The garden was lovely not massive but a good sun trap. This country pub is a slice of heaven…read more Hook Norton has a very good brewery, and there are several pubs nearby that carry its ales. The Pear Tree is the closest, and it's good enough that we've driven out to it from London several times. It's tucked in the middle of the village of Hook Norton, a very pleasant building. It's not overly large inside, just cozy, and made of the same raw materials that most un-renovated country pubs are. The area is great for rambling. We've done a couple of walks here on arriving, returning to the pub for our post-exertion refreshments. They carry several rotating Hook Norton ales, of course, all of which I find are worth a sample. The menu is broad and always tasty, and popular enough that they often sell out, so go fro lunch early. Illustrative story: The last time at the Pear Tree, we saw Hooky Pie on the menu. We asked what that was, and learned that it's locally-made beef and ale pie. It was, according to the woman behind the bar, very popular, and they usually sell out of it quite quickly. It certainly sounded like an appropriately hearty meal for a December day by an open fire. Then the couple at the table next to us each received that very dish, and the deal was sealed: it was huge, meaty, and tasty-looking. Three of our group of four ordered the Hooky Pie. A few minutes later the bartender came back with bad news: only two portions of pie left. One of the girls took one for the team and ordered fish pie instead. When our food finally arrived, it was as tasty as promised. Delicious. Thick. Oozing gravy. Huge chunks of beef, too, not a ground-up mush. Luckily, the fish pie was just as delicious an alternative for those that took it. A family with three kids came in just as we were finishing and tried to order the Hooky Pie. Sorry, the bartender said, we're all out. Without a pause, she pointed at our table and said, They took the last pies. Five pairs of hungry eyes glared at us from across the pub. We cast our eyes downwards and finished our pints.
