For my 50th birthday I decided to treat myself to a guided fly fishing trip with Baxter House this…read morepast spring. Using their online booking form, I reserved a full day float trip for $450 and made the $90 deposit as required. Subsequently, I noticed on my online credit card statement that in fact $550 was debited towards the trip. So I went back to their website and in fact their website advertised yet a third different price for the trip (the online booking form listed it at $450 when I made the reservation). Therefore, I later called Baxter House to inquire about the difference as well as to touch base about the trip itself being that I had a few questions regarding logistics, etc. The conversation started with the logistics and particulars of the trip. Although I was trying to ask some specific questions, the lady I was speaking with seemed more interested in giving a canned speech to me than actually listening to my questions. Finally, I was able to get her to answer the questions I had but to be honest it was painful to listen to her rant, cut me off, and basically be verbally belligerent. I saved the query about the difference in booking price for the end and when I politely asked why I was charged $550 instead of the $450 that the online booking form advertised at the time of booking, her response was "Well, our website hasn't been current for quite some time and we don't negotiate on the price of our trips". When asked if she understood my concern about booking their services at one price and subsequently being charged more, she became very defensive and even more rude, asking several times over "Well, do you want to cancel this trip or not?" Although the $100 wasn't going to be enough of a difference for me to cancel the trip, her belligerent attitude certainly was and that's exactly what I did. I made it clear to her that I was okay with paying the higher price but I wasn't okay with the way she was handling herself. That's the exact point when she hung up on me. Subsequently, I emailed the owner explaining the situation but that wasn't of much help. Obviously, he had gotten only her side of the story because to paraphrase his response, "We don't put up with our staff getting harassed by clients and we don't negotiate our rates". I'd like to make it very clear that I was never rude or belligerent to the person I spoke to. This is an important point to make because often times when reading reviews you are getting a slanted "one side only" account of the events. The owner in the same email response to me agreed to refund half of the cost of the trip "against their policies". Well, not a cent was ever refunded to me after giving them some time to do so. Therefore, I disputed the charge with my credit card company and never heard another word from Baxter House. While I'm sure their guides provide a quality trip, the behavior of the "lady" whom I spoke to was nothing short of appalling and even though I gave the owner a chance to call me so we could hash the disagreement out, he never made any attempt to do so nor did he issue the refund he said he would. I'd recommend steering WELL clear of Baxter House. In fact, take a look at the screenshots I posted with this review. Their website advertises their Full Day Trout Float Trip at $550. You'll see that on their online booking form the trip is quoted as $600 and below that the "total cost" is $450. Three different prices!

Rowed a boat with three people for 10 hours. No kiddingI would give this man 10 stars. He was a guide yes but really that was the tip of the iceberg. Ken is a Naturalist, biologist, entomologist, hydrologist, ichthyologist, He knows the entire fishing area like the back of his hand. Ken has more cool stories than anyone I've met. If you want a guide, this is the guy.

The hotel itself is cozy, full of charming little spaces, and we truly felt pampered throughout our stay. It's pet-friendly (huge plus!), and everyone was incredibly kind to my dog--he had the best time exploring the hiking trails with me. The vibe is very relaxed, peaceful, and the perfect place to disconnect from the world. Now for the real star of the show: the food. We did the tasting menu and it was so good. I loved the intention behind each dish and how they highlighted seasonal ingredients and the local farm sources. My personal favorites were the mushroom dish and the venison--both were phenomenal. The staff was warm, attentive, and did a great job walking us through each course. A few small observations: The dining room was a little too dark--I love seeing my food, especially when it's so beautifully presented. Since it was my birthday, I expected a bit more than a lone candle. No cookie, treat, or even a candle placed on top of dessert--it just didn't feel special. Dessert wasn't for me. It was somewhere between a milkshake and ice cream, but with a strange mochi-like texture and an overpowering amount of lavender. It felt like eating soap. The quail course tasted amazing, but the presentation wasn't appealing. It looked a bit messy, and leaving the head on (even though it wasn't edible) felt off. That said, everything was incredible--thoughtfully crafted, delicious, and visually stunning. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and the whole experience. Highly recommend--can't wait to return!

My party of 4 was a little early, so we had a drink in the tavern downstairs first; bartender made a great whisky sour. For dinner, we did the a la carte menu. I tried: + Cabbage + Ricotta toast + Grilled broccoli + Mangalista pork chop + Ricotta dumpling + Cheeseburger + Spiced cake The highlights were the cabbage, pork chop and burger. Overall I thought the food was excellent, though I wished they offered sides (especially some type of a potato for the burger). Would have gladly paid for additional sides a la carte.

Every inch felt welcoming and comfortable for our family of four. The waterfall at the Stratton Falls campus was absolutely stunning and incredibly relaxing. Falling asleep to the sound of the water from our deck made the experience feel truly special. Even with the cold weather, there were still plenty of activities to keep our family entertained. Between the waterfalls, game room, Netflix, life-sized chess, foosball, air hockey, the Crooked Cabana bar, hot tub, and dry sauna -- this place truly has it all. A special thank you to Chuck for making our Mother's Day weekend even more memorable than we could have imagined. From the cookies and coffee to the kids' welcome packets, every detail reflected warmth and care. We could not imagine a more family-friendly and welcoming experience. Our bagged breakfast was missing a few items we ordered. That really was not ideal, as we had a long drive ahead of us to the city. So we ended up having to stop to get a couple of things since what we planned on having was not there. Also, the wait for someone to be at check in was long. We went to the Stratton falls first accidentally. It's 2.5 miles from where our location was. Apparently, the guy at check in saw us and knew we were at the wrong property (they were full at that location) but didn't tell us when he saw us. (We didn't see him). When my son finally found someone (that guy) he said "I saw you when you came in and knew you went to the wrong place...". Ok.... So you just let us stand around for 12 min, before we went searching for you? He wouldn't even give us more than "it's down the road." Directions to the other place. That guy was an awful first impression. The lady at our location was lovely, but he made the initial feeling stick with me. So, customer service sucked because of him. I had friends that came to meet us from 30 min away and had to wait an additional 20 min thanks to that guy. Would I suggest it? If the service continues like it was... no. Fun themes though. I hear they moved to new ownership, so maybe that's what is going on.

But Kate and Dan structured our stay to feel safe without feeling restricted. They have a great setup of six family size tents that are distanced enough to allow us to enjoy nature in solitude. They combine the best parts of camping, cabin life and a bed and breakfast. We took our two kids (five and eight years old) and they had a ball playing in the creek, swimming in the pond, playing with the dogs. In short, it's a perfect place for kids to experience the simple joys of being kids. The tents are rustic enough for an outdoorsman but comfortable enough for someone who prefers sleeping indoors. Cooking meals on your own wood-burning stove takes a bit longer, yes, but the locally sourced food is amazing. Friday night pizza night is the big event of the week. Wood-fired oven pizzas, delicious salads from the gardens and bring your own wine. And the Saturday farm breakfast hits the spot if you're dragging a bit from the previous evening's festivities. We highly recommend Stony Creek as a getaway and hope to be back next year. Thanks, Kate and Dan!

The adults love giving the kids their privacy and independence. The kids are able to hike, walk the creek, collect eggs, visit the animals, milk the cow.. and the adults just need to sit back and relax. The farm store has everything you need if you want to pack light. Kate and Dan, the owners, are commited to sustainable farming and education- the kids always learn something. Save room for pizza night- it's always delicious. The tents sleep a family of 6 comfortably with a king size bed, two single bunks, and a cabinet bed suitable for two younger kids. When we needed it, there was room for a pack and play (which the farm does have on hand if you need it). Don't hesitate to book here- we've been here for all seasons- the first to check in and the last to check out. It's always pleasant. We're already looking forward to next year.
