Had a fantastic first day at Wünderbar and a horrible second day. So much that yes, I'm writing this after they shut down because of covid.
Second day I had to take a quick work phone call since it was a Skiing Monday, and wanted to grab a cider before since they have a full bar and a good selection of citizen .
I didn't leave a tip on a 1-can-of-cider tab because it took me 10 minutes to get who I later found out was the manger's attention while it was un-crowded; she was condescending about "what's the sudden rush?!"
This manager there took a lack of tip very personally, was unprofessional and vindictive. I'm not sure if Yelps guidelines let me post her name and my intent is not to embarrass her, but the way she "runs her house" (her words) is inappropriate for an experienced bar manager.
Then she went and told the table next to me I didn't leave a tip, right in front of me. They started to intentionally yell over my phone call "who stiffs bartenders in 2020?!" And "if you were going to just be on the phone the whole time what's the point of coming to a bar?"
Clearly I upset her so I went in after and politely confronted her, said I recognize that i upset her and if she would reopen my tab I would like to give her the tip she wanted. She got very defensive and said it was "not about the tip, it's about the fact that's not not how she runs her house" that "people have loud phone calls." This was a phone call for business so please believe me when I say it was not loud nor disruptive. I asked her if my phone call was disrupting anyone, and asked her why she approached the table to speak to them about me before I even spoke on the call.
She shrugged and said "well lovebug, this just isn't how I run my house."
The manager should have asked me directly if there was a problem with the service since I didn't leave a tip (again, on a can of cider I waited 10 minutes for her to finish her gossiping for while she also served other patrons who got to the bar after me.) instead, she acted like a child, encouraged other patrons to yell at me while I took a quiet phone call for work in a corner, then denied it to my face when I offered to make it right.
Wünderbar has a fantastic following and we had a great first day at that bar. Sugarbush management was also quick to get back to me and say the behavior was unacceptable.
Net net - come 2021, go to sugarbush, love sugarbush, ski sugarbush, but spend your time at Castlerock or the ski bar at Mt. Ellen. Maybe you can even take a phone call there and get a drink in an acceptable amount of time. read more
