I can't even get over how beautiful it was out there, the nature , the history, the animals. It was so peaceful, I wish I could stay out there forever! It was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. It was also a miraculous gift to my 73-year-old friend Lisa. She has been completely blind since an auto accident on the way to a horse show in 1969. She was only 16 years old and in training for the 1972 Olympics in dressage. This ride was her first since that day. Laura is incredibly compassionate and an absolute expert with horses. She is exceptionally safety conscious. She set Lisa up with a gentle horse named Mama, and at Lisa's request, Laura led mama from a few horse lengths away. The experience was amazing and Laura made it possible. I cannot recommend her and Trails of 49 highly enough. Laura is also a great historian. My mother's family has been in Calaveras County since the 1850s. While I live 300 miles away now, it's good to know that the history, horses, and land is so well cared for by such an exceptional person. I was born in Calaveras County and will be buried there, and I'm glad Laura is taking care of it in the meantime!

She is 11 years old, and this was her very first time ever being on a horse. The entire staff is SO lovely, and they were incredibly attentive and caring when my daughter expressed feeling nervous in the beginning. They made her feel so comfortable that she was fully able to relax and truly enjoy the ride. We had such a beautiful Mother's Day at Shadow Glen. In fact, my daughter loved it so much that she's already ready to do the 2-hour trail ride next, and I'll definitely be signing her up for lessons here! Shadow Glen truly is a wonderful place filled with great people and beautiful horses. Thank you for allowing me to share my deep love for horses with my daughter and helping create such a special memory for us both!

We met our "wrangler" Grace who gave us a refresher on the do's and don'ts while riding before starting. She gave very clear instructions and tips along the way as we rode. Anyone new to riding would have a great experience if they follow the instructions. Not our first time riding, but if you don't ride regularly it's still good to have a refresher talk. Grace also had some interesting historical notes about the landscape. Lots of beautiful wild flowers and butterflies made for a fun picturesque ride. We only did the hour ride today, and on a weekday the group ride was just the two of us which was nice. Beautiful scenery, nice staff and friendly horses.

--- Cowboy Trail…read moreRides - Tracy, CA I grew up riding horses, but it's been years since I've had regular access to them, so paid trail rides are my way to get back in the saddle once in a while. A few years ago, I went on a trail ride with another company in Fair Oaks, CA, and honestly, it was such a letdown. So this time, I wanted to find a place that would actually meet my expectations--and wow, did I ever find it with Cowboy Trail Rides in Tracy! Our group of nine (ages 12 to 67!) had a mix of total beginners and experienced riders. Lucas, the owner, made sure each of us got the right horse for our comfort and skill level. He really puts safety first but still makes sure everyone has fun. The two-hour ride was amazing! We went through open fields, past orchards, tall corn rows, and along peaceful water canals. The scenery was beautiful, and everyone had a great time. Some of us walked, some trotted--Lucas made sure everyone could ride at their own pace. He chatted with us the whole way, shared fun facts about the horses, and kept a close eye on everyone to make sure we were comfortable. All of the horses were super well-trained (Lucas trains them himself), and you can tell how much he cares about them. He even took a bunch of photos and videos for us, which was such a nice touch. By the end of the ride, we were already planning our next one--maybe a birthday trail ride! Lucas mentioned he also does weekday and evening rides (one even includes a Starbucks stop!) and overnight camping are in the works. Honestly, the whole experience was everything I hoped for and more. Lucas goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has a safe, fun, and memorable time. We tipped him for his awesome hospitality, and of course, the horses got their carrots! If you're thinking about going on a trail ride, I can't recommend Cowboy Trail Rides enough. We had so much fun and made great memories. We'll definitely be back!
