It reminded me of the University Cafe on Byres Road which I also used to frequent on a regular basis years ago; no added fanciness or pretension, a dash of surly waitress and a pinch of chippy grease to soothe the (hungover) soul. Well Coia's Cafe, my how you've grown! Upon 1st entering Coia's quite soon after it reopening I must admit I got sad and longed for the school-style tables and greasy misspelled menus but mostly for the mucho cheapness of the old Coia's. Oof. Then upon visiting Coia's again after this 1st time I grew to love Coia's for what it is now - a great Italian cafe/restaurant. I must admit I do still find the prices a tad steep for myself but having said that you do certainly get what you pay for and wow! Hello big portions! Woof-a-doodle-doo. I'm quite a big eater and I like a healthy (as in unhealthy) sized portion of foodage when I'm dining and Coia's certainly does not disappoint! Stuffed City. Whether it be a lazy weekend brunch/lunch or an evening meal Coia's caters for all. They still have their greasyspoon throwback - the chippy menu alongside quality Italian dishes, such as pizzas and pastas and gorgeous fresh fish of day (I had the sea bass once and it was beautiful) plus lighter bites such as omelette's (which are lovely), baked potatoes (again tasty), toasties and paninis/rolls/baguettes. The desserts are great too. Their own ice-cream (in many flavours) is lush, especially with some of that blood, I mean raspberry sauce on top. Yum. Coia's Cafe also do one of my favourite coffees ever: The Caffe Royale. This is their gorgeous coffee with whipped cream on top. It is better than I just made it sound, honest guv. They also have a tasty wine list and they serve draft Birra Moretti which is equally lovely. If you've never ventured into the dark and mysterious East End/Duke Street then please do not let this put you off coming here to try out one of Glasgow's finest Italian cafe/restaurants, you're missing out if you don't. Only minus point I have is getting a table on a weekend is sometimes a bugger but you're more than welcome to book a table so don't let this put you off as we all know that the best things come to those that wait (hopefully not for too long though...).

Then one day we were passing and starving so decided to give Coia's a whirl. Coia's is traditional Italian, it has an air of authenticity, like a proper family run Italian should. Don't expect modern, fancy schmancy decor, that isn't what they're about, expect to be greeted by 3rd/maybe even 4th generation family members who want to serve you the food they grew up with. Open from breakfast through lunch and dinner the menu has something for everyone. I, a creature of habit, opt for the calzone on every occasion (each time stating I will have something different but never do!) and once you try it you'll understand why! It must be at least 12" in diameter, has the best dough and can be filled with your choice of up to 3 fillings (meatballs, spicy chicken and mozzarella are my fav's). It's amazing and at £10.25 is a fraction of what Papa Johns or Dominos will sting you! Freshly grated Parmesan is always offered for anyone having pasta, rightly so. They also stock my favourite lemon San pellegrino soft drink, this makes me uber happy. Should you have space for pudding there's always a great selection to choose from but I would instead recommend checking out the revolving ice cream wheel...oh my is it awesome! It's part of the deli where you can buy produce to takeaway, always worth a browse. A word of warning though, you can very rarely just turn up and get seated straight away, they are constantly mobbed! Expect to wait a few minutes for a table; as the saying goes though "good things come to those who wait".

It was a rainy day: drizzling : that consistency of rain that makes you feel a bit run down. I was met with the most delicious, warming coffee: a very smooth latte, that had such a lovely taste that there was no need for a drop of sugar. They were out of most of their pastries by the time I sat in--due to their popularity, I have no doubt. I chose one of their remaining items: a small cake that had a touch of lemon and a raspberry on top of a creamy frosting. It was delicious--a welcomed treat when I felt in need of a pick me up. I did not have a chance to test their food so am unable to comment. Do note however: This is a VERY small place. Cozy to be sure, but small and by no means for larger groups. It is ideal for the soloist and duos to come in and have a fairly quick coffee, cake, and food (I assume). This is NOT a place to study. There are no comfortable lounge chairs, chairs or tables. The seating is composed of stools that reside at two bars. It's kind of reminding me of Italian style cafes where you drink your espresso at the bar, across from the barista who just served it to you (though in Rome, they don't offer you stools even!). Given the level of their coffee and cake, I'll be back again soon.

There are no bathrooms which is a downfall but it was close enough to our hotel. I got the chorizo bagel both days I went and a latte. They have display cases of baked goods and sandwiches. When I ordered, the toasted it. It was filling and had a spicy kick in it. Very good! The bagel was crispy and good too!

Told you it was right in the heart. Boom boom! It's been opened for quite a while now and I have driven by so many times longing to have a wee try. As I'm now getting all super healthy 'n' that and I can now walk to work, the world's my oyster and I can now swing by anytime. Super bonus! I finished a shift early so decided this was my moment to have a late lunch and give in to my aching longing. My folks had been a couple of times before, once for a Christmas party. They did warn me that it was a little expensive but it was a lovely experience and the food was good. So eyeballed the menu and I have to agree it was a big ol' mighty on the steep side. I was quite surprised for a Blantyre café, so this is where it loses a wee star. I asked the fine lady 'what be the soup of the day' and she said 'cream of vegetable'. 'One bowl please'. I opted for this as it was £3 for soup and crusty bread. A baked potato was £5 with cheese and coleslaw and went up with the various fillings you choose. I can't remember the sandwiches but they were quite pricey too. The cheapest hot food on the menu was chips at £2. Talk about cheap as chips. Haw haw! Sorry! Anyhoo, when I was in a Byres Road establishment today and saw that their baked potatoes started at the £2.50 mark, I was proven right at the expense. It's probably a catch 22 for them that if they keep it low it won't cover costs blah blah etc... It came across as a calm environment but you would think that it'd be over run by school kids, especially as the high school is literally a stones throw away as well as the primary across the road. Blissfully they aren't as The Little Tearoom have a notice up to say that children must be accompanied with an adult. So it's an unruly kiddie free zone. It's also a brand spanking new build so built for the purpose of serving fine food and afternoon tea. I will return, oh yes, I will be back. Hopefully try an afternoon tea, maybe a wee cheeky breakfast roll on my way to work. Who knows?!

This shop has been here for many, many years I remember going into the cafe when I was a wee boy…read moreabout five or six at that time (50) years ago it was called little Italy and at that time it had all the ornate fittings from that era, wooden benches and stools even at that time it sold ice cream and sweets all the local children loved the shop the main reason. I think was that the owners were Italian. The current owners are related to the previous ones from fifty years ago. Now onto the sweets they sell, imagine every sweet you can think of from your childhood well it's in this shop I mean from my childhood and including yours oh happy days, I bought " lucky potatoes " and after the first bite I was instantly transported back. 50 years . I'm not sure if there are any other shops like this one but no doubt there is, but this is my favourite one if your ever in the area give it a go you want be disappointed
