We stopped over at The Willard in between movies at the Artcraft theater next door for a quick bite. Overall it was pretty good. They had a Buffalo Chicken Dip listed as an appetizer so we were psyched to try it. Unfortunately they were out of it (womp.womp.) so we went with the Chicken Nachos instead. I decided to try their blue cheese burger (because I love me a good blue cheese burger) with a side of fries. Because they were unaware that they were out of the Buffalo dip until after we had placed our meal order the burgers came out first and the appetizer afterwards. Not really a big deal. It usually would annoy me but the waiter was very apologetic and really in the end it's whatever. The burger wasn't bad. I did have an issue with the bun. It was very bland. Just tasted like one you would get out of a processed bag of buns at a grocery store. It did the burger and the blue cheese no justice at all. A bad bun can really ruin a good sandwich. I was probably more annoyed at this than the late appetizer. The fries were pretty tasty. Thick cut and crunchy..just how I like them. Right when we were finishing up with our burgers the chicken nachos came out. They were HUGE. The waiter suggested having buffalo sauce on the side for dipping. He was so right. Their buffalo sauce was delicious. The perfect parts hot and sweet..very tangy. It actually made me upset because I can only imagine how good their buffalo dip is. Oh well..maybe next time. Anywho, the nachos were good. Tons of chicken on top. Enough cheese to cover everything. Tasted great dipped into the buffalo sauce. This place is very convenient if you're going to see a movie next door for before or after. The food was ok, the service was pretty nice. I love this place but do NOT recommend a salad unless you want a bowl of lettuce.... as for the other options... Everything is delicious, their prices are great, staff is helpful and we love the atmosphere! T The tenderlion was absolutely wonderful!!! We could get whatever we wanted on it. It was thicker than normal breaded tenderlions and very tasty!! It was enjoyed by all at the table since it was so huge. The fish sandwich was a bit small but because of the delicious fries but my son really didn't care. He is a high school swimmer and was full by the end of our meal. Mediocre food, poor service, overstimulating bar. I went with my fiancés family tonight and I was pretty disappointed in the service I received. My server was generally pretty unhelpful. Even when it was clear I had food allergies he made no effort to help me make a different selection or offer me any sort of allergen menu. When I asked him what he'd recommend that didn't have gluten he ignored me and there was a super awkward long silence until I prompted him again which he wasn't very helpful at all again. I'm not usually one to be upset if someone doesn't know but he didn't even try and I felt like he was simply annoyed by me. I can't change the fact that I have food allergies for someone else to be comfortable. I hate being made to feel like I'm an inconvenience. I really, really wanted to love this place because I'd heard amazing things. It started out stressful because it's a seat yourself place... which is usually great, but the dining room is a series of small rooms. If you're not familiar with the layout and it's crowded, it can be quite the stressful first few minutes. We found a high top table in a back room near a side door. Wait staff is kind, if overwhelmed. Decent beer selection, including a handful of local drafts. Our table shared a variety of things- pizza, wings, fries, a shrimp basket, and the nachos con queso. It was all good, but nothing special. The xtra hot wings are not especially hot, so I recommend "overshooting" your preferred heat level. All in all, I'm glad we went but probably won't go out of our way to return. read more

Good food. Average service. I had the breaded tenderloin and onion rings. The sandwich was great and the rings good. I might just order this to take home next time. I was sitting at the bar and what really soured my mood was the complete lack of attention, not just to me, but to the chicken wing bone that laid there the whole time I was there. Firstly, hated the 'Please Seat Yourself' aspect of this place. We opted for outdoor seating and it was tight. Our server didn't seem very happy to even be there. The food took FOREVER and there was only 4 of us in our group. I got a chicken caesar salad...never again. The chicken was basically Tyson frozen chunks and parmesan cheese. Plus a nice Kraft Caesar Dressing packet! Woo! The pizza was okay, think better quality Pizza King. I think I went in expecting too much and was extremely disappointed. This place has really went down hill . We went for supper tonight. And the waitress finally took our order .well it took us over 20 minutes to get a drink . But the couple who sat across from us came in after us got their drinks way before us . Why ? I'm not sure . I stopped in for lunch and grabbed a seat in the barroom. Although the staff in charge of the bar was busy handling drinks and business calls, service was prompt and generally friendly. I ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger with a side of cole slaw. There was a silent television over the bar (running subtitles) to keep me entertained while waiting. About fifteen minutes later, my meal came out. After a slight correction on my side order, I enjoyed my food. The burger was grilled well done over a flame grill so the flavor was deep and savory. The toppings covered the burger evenly without making the sandwich so tall that it would be difficult to eat. The bun was fresh, however, the lettuce was a little "aged" and the tomato slice a little shy of red. Still, the burger was good and satisfying. The cole slaw was the creamy kind and was really good. The carrot strips retained their crunch, so I really enjoyed the side. The burger also came with a dill pickle spear that was also crisp. For some reason, my chips didn't come with the meal, but since I didn't really care about them, I didn't call the staff's attention to the omission. The building itself has a long history (you can read about it on the outside of the menu). It retains a staircase and fireplace from 1822. There is plenty of seating, both indoor and out. Coming in the main entrance requires climbing stairs (not sure if there is another entrance.) I've only been here a handful of times in the past 5 years and let me tell you it's been not so good every time. I'm not a local, but the locals will tell you this place is the best thing since sliced bread. It's mediocre at best. In laws wanted to go this evening so we arrived at 5:45. Should have brought my flashlight and ear plugs. The place is very dark, dingy and grimy. Not sure if it's the tile floors and the plaster walls but by the time I left I felt like I had been screaming for the 50 mins I was there. Very hard to hold a conversation with 4 of us sitting at a table for 4. Then at 6:30 they started pumping the jams baby!! Shit awful music played so loud it felt like a Vegas nightclub. So loud others around us were yelling their conversations. We actually had to quit talking towards the end of the meal. Now the food.... everything fried or grilled is mediocre. I could buy hamburger at the grocery store and make a better burger. Buns for the burgers appear to be from Walmart. The onion rings were so greasy and they use soooo much breading that the first bite I bit into, grease ran down my chin. DISGUSTING. Fries were meh. Wife and father in law got the Rueben. They said it was just okay. Mother in law got the BLT and it literally had 2 pieces of shriveled bacon on each half. Had to ask for more to even make it a sandwich. The waiter apologized. The beer.... selection was decent. Nothing spectacular. Ongoing joke with some guys from Franklin I work with is that you need to ask for ice because their beer is always so warm. I never believed them as I had never ordered a beer. I ordered one this time from Taxman, hop collector to be exact and when I got it (2 mins after ordering) he brought it back and it was NOT cold. If your looking for great bar food, nice atmosphere and friendly people in Franklin this is your spot. The Building itself is absolutely delightful. It was built in the 1860's and has some great architectural features. The main bar and the additional side bar (evenings and weekends) are right out of the prohibition era and give you that classic feel. The outdoor seating is the place to be though in the spring and summer months. The patrons here range from the locals that everyone knows, bikers making a quick stop for some food and drinks to families of all ages and sizes. The Willard specializes in their pizzas (our favorite is the margarita pizza) and tenderloins but their wings, burgers and pub style finger food is just as good. They do complete their food selection with salads, wraps and sandwiches. The beer selection is not over the top but does beat most places in Franklin. They have the normal light beers, but also carry sun king on tap and a good variety of bottled beer. Only issues we have seen so far is that depending on your server you may get a lack of service when they get really busy. Be patient and you'll be fine. Overall if you want good service, yummy food and awesome atmosphere you'll enjoy yourself here. read more

We've been several times and each time we tell ourselves not to go back. The food isn't great and the service is very slow. The only positive thing about the Willard is it's historic charm and beer selection. We were recently there last week and after that experience, we're not going back. It took almost an hour to get a pizza and a quesadilla. The pizza is not as good as the pub down the block and the quesadilla was flavorless. Walk down the street to the next pub off Jeff street. Wow. We are so impressed! We were wanting to try something new that is considered local/small business in the midst of this pandemic and we are SO glad we went with the Willard. From the time we ordered to leaving, the staff were kind and helpful. There was about a 6 car line there and it was moving quick due to their staff working hard. We ordered boneless wings with honey BBQ sauce (great sweet sauce), fries (imagine Rally steak fries), spinach salad (the full size is a normal carry out container. They do not skimp on toppings. The pecans were amazing and the spinach was very fresh!), pesto grilled chicken (I CAN'T EXPRESS HOW GOOD THIS WAS. the chicken was amazingly grilled, good amount of pesto and the perfect amount of cheese!), and lastly the chili cheese nachos. We did curbside carry out and paid cash. We live in Shelbyville so we had about a 25 minute drive home. The food was still warm and fresh. They put the chili dip for the nachos in a different container which we were impressed by since other restaurants seem to forget that. Overall, our total was $36 but since they are running a deal right now, we got $5 off! A true steal. The Willard will definitely be in rotation now. More like the willies...I had been told this was the place for a breaded tenderloin. Not so much, the sandwich was just okay but in the Land of the Tenderloin, so many more places do it better. Now to the fries, they tasted like some bargain brand fake potato mistake. I was at the Willard towards the end of the lunch rush and the service was just okay and would have been better I believe if I was a local repeat customer. Not a friendly place to be an out of town tourist. The people who rave about the Willard must not venture out much. My coffee was awful - old, with only powdered creamer (ew) offered, and no refills offered. My jalapeño poppers didn't taste really fresh, more like supplied by a service. This place is a good go-to if you want to go out somewhere with something for everyone. They have a lot of options on the menu as well as some consistently yummy pizzas. It's on the better end of quality as far as bar food/ American food goes. Mostly basic stuff but with a few surprisingly delicious items. The wings, for example, are my favorite in Franklin. It should be noted this is not a great place to go if you have sensory sensitivities. It is very loud and close together inside and a bit crowded even if you're outside. But it is a great late night spot and has the perfect casual night with friends vibes. read more
