They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

The most bizarre element was finding a taxidermied bird encased in the toilet door - whether this was supposed to help signify ladies or gents I don't know; either way I apparently went in the wrong loo...twice. What really made the evening though was the motley crew of musicians sat round one of the tables, who burst into a folksy ditty and you immediately felt the traditional Scottish factor massively increase - whether this is a regular thing or a one off I'm not sure, but it was a charming spectacle.

So, my friend and I pitched up to be greeted by two regulars at the door who told us the pub was closed. "Awwww, really?" I said. "Naw hen!" followed by much guffawing on their behalf. In we stumbled, both having a laugh at the two oldies. The bar was empty apart from one other old gent which seems reasonable for 4.30pm on a Friday. We got a couple of drinks (Thistly Cross bottles for £3.50 each which is what I pay for them in the supermarket!) and sat by the fire (which thankfully someone came and stoked the hell out of so it was absolutely roaring, and scorching hot). The bar had a nice relaxed vibe. By the time we were leaving one of the regulars was well steaming and came over to talk to the Australian lassies and generally give us a bit of a ribbing. He got us to sign the visitors book and was generally pretty funny - I even got a kiss as I was leaving. Lucky me. So, would I recommend going here? It has a 500-seat main auditorium and a studio space and boasts stage facilities that quite a few main-scale theatres would be envious of. In fact, it's a shame that the main house only seats 500, as the stage is large enough to accommodate some fairly large gigs that would attract a large audience. The cafe/restaurant out front serves a very high standard of pre-theatre nosh too and offers great views over the Clyde. A nice place to sit with a coffee and gaze at the scenery.

The only thing that was tough (and completely my fault) was needing to use to the toilet (too many pre-show drinks, ha!) during one of the opening shows. Being in the centre of the row of seats made for interrupting a bunch of people who didn't seem too thrilled about it. I was able to sit in a different row when I got back, for a few songs until the bad was done playing so I kept from interrupting any more people. The evening felt very uorganised, and although, little of this is down to Sweeney's, the staff were of little help. We arrived early. The decor is eclectic, the pub definitely has a personal touch. I really liked the musical and instrument motifs by the stage area. There's also some quirky signs by the bar. Although, it did all a bit funky and mismatched to me. When we walked in, instruments in hand, we made our way from one half of the bar to the other; one which has the stage. Although the bar staff in the first room had explained we'd to head through to the second, nobody welcomed us or explained what would be happening when we got there. Other than a heckle from some folks at a table and a 'What will you be playing for us?!', we were left to it. We took a seat and, noticing no other instrument-in-hand folks, wandered exactly what the plan was. So we ordered drinks, and then I introduced myself and the band. At this point, more musicians were in the bar. Phew! The barman explained that the person who runs the night was running late. Understandably not their fault, what could they do? But then time went on and on. And there was no update from the bar. We just waited and waited. We'd presumed we were first since it had been listed that way without a mention of running times but after waiting till after the night should have begun (when the organiser finally arrived), we found out we were second. By this point, we just wanted to play; play and go home. In addition, the monitor mix wasn't great and the organiser had mistakenly thought there was two of us, so Sweeney's only paid two of us for performing. The general feeling was that there's venues out there doing amazing things for local music. The best and memorable gigs for us have had great hosts behind them. For a Sunday afternoon, there were a few patrons, but not many. The lunch menu was really cheap - 2 meals for £11! You can't go wrong. The fish and chips were perfectly cooked. Not too deep fried. The fish didn't taste frozen. I wish there was more tartar sauce, but there were a variety of other sauces on the table. It also comes with a drink. There's TVs and sports memorabilia everywhere. Washroom could be cleaner. But everyone is friendly. Most importantly, the food is good.
