Seeing as my grandad has been drinking in here for a good 40 years, and for a good reason, I'm…read moreabout 99% sure there will be a monument resurrected in his name when it's his time to go! The Auld Hoose is probably one of, if not Hamilton's most popular wedding/function venue, because of its huge function suite. I can't count the amount of functions, race nights, etc I've been to in here, and I've never had a bad night! The only reason I feel I can't give this place 5 stars is because I've never actually been in the pub section of the Auld Hoose, and the day I do, I'll be sure to update my review! The only reason I haven't drank in here is because it is definitely a regulars pub, with an age bracket of about 60-80. I might actually take my grandad for a drink in his local, he'd love that! If you find our a function you've been invited to is being held in here, you should definitely attend; you would not be disappointed!

The Auld Hoose is much more than just a pub. The hall itself is a good size, big enough for a small to medium sized wedding party and small enough to make everyone feel included. At both functions, the bar staff have taken drinks orders from the table, and put it on a tab so you can pay it off at the end of the night which is a great idea, but also dangerous as you can end up with a hefty bill at the end of the night! Drinks are not expensive, but they aren't the cheapest, which is understandable as they can charge a slightly higher price because of the functions. Nice hall for a party, available to hire out on request for a deposit when booking.

About 10 years ago it was my parents local pub, where them and all their friends would meet up for drinks. According to them it used to have a great management team and was a wonderful place to drink. These days, the pub has a very different management team, and subsequently different bar staff. Every time I go in, I'm always served terribly because the staff are always so rude and seem to just not want to work there, I don't understand why they don't just find a job they can be happy doing. I also find that there are a lot of regulars that go, but they're the sort of regulars who give you weird looks if you go in and you're not one of them, they always make me feel uncomfortable for going into what feels like "their pub." I wouldn't suggest going here for a drink to anyone unless its the only place open.

I popped into the Barleycorn with my mate for a quick pint while waiting for some friends to come…read moreand meet us for a function in the nearby Old Hoose pub. We immediately felt like all eyes were on us, probably because we weren't regulars, and partly because we were wrapped in tinsel as it was a Xmas night out. My friend went to the bar and said that the barmaid was quite friendly and seemed to be in the Xmas spirit, but the punters at the bar looked at her with distaste. We kind of rushed our drinks down and left as we really felt self concious, which was a shame cos it's not a bad wee place which seems like it might have been a good starting point to a night out, as the drinks were pretty cheap.
