Coworkers and I were in town for work and happened upon the Wild Mare. I wasn't in the mood for a big steak and ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and a dinner salad. The salad was good, and I really liked the homemade honey mustard dressing. The main dish, however was bland and barely edible. I had to add a lot of salt in order for it to be palatable. I suppose the error here was ordering pasta at a place known for steaks, but the menu isn't large, so you'd expect everything to be above average in a place like that. The rest of the party got burgers and steaks and reported their meals to be excellent. So, li g story short, stick with the beef. Don't have the pasta. read more

Waited at table for thirty minutes. EVERY table around us got waited on EXCEPT us! My son was in town visiting so thought we would go someplace nice. Got up and left when we didn't get waited on. First, the service last night was incredible. We got there a half hour before closing time but were seated, not rushed, and had a very pleasant dinner. My wife had a steak and I had the salmon. Both were excellent. Second, my wife accidentally left here purse at the restaurant and did not realize it until this morning. She fretted all day about this as they don't open until later in the afternoon. She was extremely happy to find that they had found it, held it in the office, and she was able to retrieve it today. The food was outstanding...as good as we have had in the Bitterroot Valley including Missoula. The service was good but they need to assign areas for their servers rather than having them try to take care of tables all over the restaurant. Would there again! read more

I ordered the pasta alfredo with salmon. I should have returned the dish immediately. There was no 'homemade' alfredo sauce to be seen. I wonder if someone forgot to add it, or if they were running out of the sauce. I didn't pick the restaurant and will refuse to return. I took half to go and won't make do with it at home, I'll add my own alfredo sauce to be able to finish it. Service and wine was good. read more

Our second visit there. The food and service were amazing the first time. Tonight, I took my wife to celebrate Mother's Day early. The restaurant was busy at 5:45, but certainly not packed. We sat for 20 mins before getting water or speaking to a server. Just watching, it looked like there was no rhyme or reason to which tables each server was responsible for. Ours went from one end of the restaurant to the other. Frustrating to watch people seated after you get their meal while we waited for a second drink. Dinner literally took 2 hours.... Food is great, atmosphere is great. Hope it was some sort of off night. read more

The service was impeccable. Our waitress was so friendly and made good menu suggestions,. Our meal was outstanding. Two steaks cooked perfectly and delicious pasta. Atmosphere was really cool, food was okay. We had the baked Brie which was covered in a berry sauce. I would have liked it a tad bit warmer and creamier. My salmon was way overcooked but my husband's lamb chops were bomb ! The best thing we ate though was the clam chowder!! We'll go back just for that !! read more

Wow!!! This I the best steakhouse in the Bitterroots. We've tried the all so I speak from experience. First of all, our waitress was super attentive, honest and efficient. Kudos to Carrie. She's great. I mean GRRR-EAT! I ordered the bacon-wrapped filet. It was cooked to my preferred degree (rare) and was delicious. The sun-dried tomato topping was a pleasant surprise and it paired nicely with the meat. The garlic mashed potatoes actually tasted like garlic (which so many times the garlic is almost not detectable in other restaurants) and the veggies were al dente the way I like them. My husband ordered the special prime ribs and added the scampi-style crap to accompany it. He was happy with the meal. The surprise of the night was dessert. We ordered the creme brûlée. Now I have had amazing crime brûlée from 5-star restaurants before and this one rated right up there with those. The texture was silky smooth, the custard was light and not eggy at all. It was so good I thought about ordering a second one but we resisted. We did learn that the stroganoff is made with filet mignon and Carrie said it's not the left over cooked meat. We are definitely ordering that the next time. Kudos to the Chef and the staff. We had a very nice meal. read more

TERRIBLE....due to bad info on website. Took my wife their tonight for steaks, on Valentine's Day. We have been there before nd food is good. We were the first couple in at 5 pm(opening time)... The lady asked what our names were so she could check reservations. I explained that there were only 2 of us and the web site CLEARLY said 'reservations for 5 or more'. She said, 'oh no, that is for regular days, not Valentine's day'. Web site did NOT say that. SAD, I'm 78 and my wife is 76...this was going to be a treat for her since we can't afford $100+ for dinners very often. We will not return.... read more

We were back in Corvallis, MT this week visiting Family. Had a wonderful dinner at The Wild Mare tonight. My family raves about how delicious the food is and we finally had an opportunity to try it out for ourselves. One of us had the side salad that was what you'd expect from a side salad. The dressing was good. I had a Caesar salad and it was also good. My husband ordered the seafood penne pasta with a slice of garlic toast and loved it. I had the baby back ribs with garlic mashed potatoes and sautéed fresh veges. All were cooked just right. Mom ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer as an entree. They were a bit over cooked but the sauce was yummy so that helped. It was great to not have to drive to another town and be able to enjoy a really good dinner in Corvallis. One of our FAVORITE places to eat in Montana! Ever since their new chef came to work here, we have loved it. The portions are massive and the food quality and service are incredible. Each time we go, we are excited to try something different on the menu and are blown away each time. Now they are doing lunch on Friday and Saturday too and we are stoked to get more chances to go there as a result.They have also always accommodated my food allergies, and the waitresses and chef are always kind and personable. This was a first visit for each of four diners. Four different entrees, so we could all sample: filet mignon, lamb chops, ribeye steak, and prime rib. We also ordered a Caesar salad and a salad with feta cheese and strawberries. Each of us was delighted with every bite. We meet for dinner often - usually a fairly lengthy affair because we don't stop talking. This was not the case at The Wild Mare - there were many silences because each of us was enjoying the food and the atmosphere so much. Easily 75% of our conversations was about the meal - outstanding in every respect. SERVICE: Excellent. Great energy, even better smiles. Easy to see that the wait staff was working very hard, but all servers we encountered were upbeat and helpful. Each acted as tho they enjoyed being there to work. FACILITY: A fun, Montana-style experience... Dress up or down and it's all good. Lots of lovely woods - inlaid tables, beautiful flooring, exot wood chairs, clever signage. Ever the swinging door to the kitchen was a creative wood design kind of like a swinging privacy fence. TASTE:Outstanding in every way. Each meat was cooked to perfection and each was a different request. When I try a new restaurant I taste all the sides first - one expects the entree to be good. But have they cared just as much about the sides? The Wild Mare cares... Perfectly cooked asparagus, a risotto that I can't stop thinking about (it was on my husband's plate, so I got just enough to REALLY wish I had ordered some myself), garlic mashed potatoes with a special something... Texture was perfect (smooth with tiny bites of potato combined) lovely presentation and a delightful seasoning finish that makes you eager for the next bite. Rave reviews on the feta with strawberries salad. My husband is very discerning about his Caesar salad. Not a single complaint - perfectly seasoned with just the ight amount of parmesan. Each plate arrived presented to please... A clever tomato diced on a hint of sprouts for eye candy. Each entre was just as we hoped - rare was rare as was medium rare. Surprisingly good crust on rare prime rib. PORTION SIZE: Couldn't ask for more. My husband typically cleans his plate, yet I scored big because some of that amazing risotto came home for me. Doggy bags for three of us. Yum! PRICE: Fair and reasonably priced. WINE LIST:Some very good options, tho we drivers opted for water...Eager to try for our next visit. MISC: No reservations. Arrive at 5pm to see almost every table filled immediately. Nice artwork, varied subject matter. Our table was near three large fly patterns - a fun surprise since we four are avid fly fishers and own two fly tying and fishing businesses. Two dining areas, so you could conceivably bring a large group for a celebration. The noise level is a bit high, probably due to the open design and hard surfaces. Extremely disappointed with the customer service I received this afternoon. I called the restaurant a little bit after 5:00 pm to place a to go food order. I spoke to Lynn who graciously told me that they were very busy and had to ask "him" if I could place my order. Couple of things worth mentioning: Lynn did not ask the size of my order, or even what I was planning on ordering. She did not specify who "him" was but put me on hold and went to check with "him"! Apparently "him" decided that he could not handle my order but suggested that he might be able to take my request if I call back at 7:00 pm. A bit hungry at the moment.... I won't be calling the restaurant back at 7:00 or at any other time in the future!!!!! This situation is not only not acceptable, but unfortunately is a constant reminder of how deplorable customer service is in many places, especially food restaurants. If "him" is the owner of The Wild Mare, some advice to you: Your restaurant won't last much longer, I for one will not be a patron even with the gift certificate I was gifted!!! If "him" is the chef, some advice to you as well: take a deep breath and find a job easier to handle! Charming Steakhouse in Corvallis Montana. Delicious food, fantastic service. I have eaten there twice, both times the food and service was great. Tonight was very busy and there was an oversight with our order. One meal out six was delayed but the staff addressed the concern and went above and beyond to correct the error. We went with some friends while visiting town. My steak was tough and not even a steak knife was brought with the steak. No other foods came along with the meal other than a salad, which was good by the way. The bread was sliced into very small pieces and was tough and cold. No potato with the meal unless you ordered it separate. My friend's prime rib was not fresh, but had just been heated up. He couldn't even eat it. My husband's hamburger was not cooked well done and so was pink in the middle. The fries were tough. Very disappointed!! Ambiance was fair. read more

This steakhouse was such a great find. My family and I are visiting from California and I was really hoping to have a nice steak dinner while in Montana. Let me tell you, this is the place! We started out with great apps; Wild Mushroom Bruschetta, and baked Brie with Huckleberries. Both were delicious. Then came our steaks. My husband and I both ordered the ribeye and my mom ordered the filet mignon. My husband was smart and ordered the sauce on the side. Later he informed me that he did this so he could really taste the quality of the meat. I highly recommend if you order a sauce, get it on the side. The meat is so fresh and good that it absolutely doesn't need anything to accompany it. I can't remember the last time I ate a steak without A-1 or some sort of sauce on it. Probably the best ribeye I have ever eaten. My moms filet was also very good. It came with a nice thick slice of bacon on it that gave the filet a light smoke flavor to it. The filet was also a really generous cut, and had a perfect texture to it (wasn't overly soft or mushy). Dessert and wines were also very nice. I would also like to really give 10 stars to the wait staff. They were all super friendly and all smiles. It was a Busy Friday night and they were all hustling through the restaurant with their hands piled high with soups, salad, steaks, you name it, and they were all so friendly and happy to help. I loved when I said to the waitress "this steak is amazing" and she said "well, we do it better in Montana" with a friendly smile. Well, she ain't lying! Last night...rain at last and the smoke is much gone from the Valley, but the quality of the Wild Mare stays up there. Another excellent dinner. Talking with Pam, she is preparing for winter with guest chefs coming in, soup and stew nights and less formal menu items. She wants to maintain the cozy atmosphere with good eating and drinking deals for those long, cold winter evenings. She also has been hosting private dinners and lunches for organizations as well as private individuals in addition to her Wednesday - Saturday 4 - 10 operating hours. My wife and I both felt that we were having dinner at a friend's place where we were part of a group of invitees. I still fear that my writing good reviews that the tourists next year will dominate the tables. But that is good news for the Wild Mare. read more
