Awesome place, phenomenal service! We spend a couple of days here before getting on a cruise ship, so the tavern and inn need to be reviewed separately. The tavern was a quaint English pub style place with eclectic decor and an amazing atmosphere. We had dinner there one night and breakfast there each day (since we were staying at the Inn). All of the food was outstanding but the fish and chips were the best I've ever had! The servers were friendly and knew their menu well and we enjoyed each meal. The Inn is upstairs and can be accessed via the tavern during business hours or a private outside entrance all of the time. Our room on the second floor was a beautiful corner room with a big bay window and full bathroom. We really loved staying there. Fully stocked fridge that we were free to enjoy too. The only slight downside (and it's not the White Star's fault, so no reduced score for them) is that the bar across the corner got a new sound system and plays it loud until 0200. Every. Bloody. Night. The manager said that the police were going to be checking noise levels after many complaints, so hopefully it's been resolved! But again, that's not White Star's fault and we heard that other rooms didn't have that issue. Regardless, if you're in Southampton, you need to drop in for a pint, a meal or spend the night! read more

This historic inn/tavern is in the heart of Southampton, the major cruise port of the UK. It was formerly known as the Alliance Hotel and is where some of the Titanic passengers stayed before boarding that fateful voyage. The inn feels like an old ocean liner from the early 1900s without the opulence found later. Some of the rooms are named after former ocean liners, and thus named the White Star now for England's most famous line, owners of the Titanic and many others, now called Cunard. We had a delightful dinner. It has a pub atmosphere but a bit more upscale as a restaurant or tavern. To celebrate we got a bottle of the sparkling wine from Kent. It was quite good and went well with the meal I ordered a pheasant croquette on a bed of peas and Brussels sprouts. It was excellent My main was the chicken dish which was very well prepared and delicious. The sauce was good and the preparation better than expected for this type of establishment. The portions are substantial and I was quite full and unable to have a dessert. The waitstaff are cordial and really hustle when the crowd appears. A bit on the pricier end, especially with the wine selection, but the quality is good. read more

Small quintessential English pub, square in the center of the court of restaurants aligning Oxford Street. Great ambience and welcoming staff. A variety of meal options that will please all-even my vegan friends. Nightly specials and proper Sunday meal; however get there early if you like the Sunday supper as it sells out early. Portions are large so we opted for the nightly special steak and ale pie, Mediterranean Chicken and burrata, and fish and chips. Steak was incredibly tender and the crusty exterior crust complimented the steak nicely. Served with tasty cabbage and mashers. Although the chicken was bland on its own, the flavors of the dish intensified when mixed together with the roasted vegetables, burrata, pesto and harissa purée. Traditional haddock fish and chips. Generous portion with the fresh moist haddock, not the batter, being the star of the dish. Lovely plating too! read more

Hotel: A boutique motel located on a lively pedestrian friendly street. While there is no lift, they communicate with you before arrival to ensure you have a smaller bag prepared for the climb, while having the option of leaving your bigger bag down at reception. I believe rooms span across floors 2-4... I was fortunate enough to be on floor 2, so my bag didn't have too far of a haul! The rooms have AC, which in and of itself is a huge perk with how common this is not in this area! I had packed a fan expecting to be uncomfortable, but the room was perfect. The motel has old charm. Nothing fancy, but I didn't expect as such with what I had booked. I had a comfortable night of sleep and would book here again pre-cruise. Tavern: I had the pre-fixe dinner on a Monday evening with the chicken liver parfait and beet root bourguignon. Both dishes were wild cards for me, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed each! The savory of the pate against the acidic/sweet apply chutney was delicious! I enjoyed every bite, but especially so with the chicken skin. The beet root was seasoned well but the mushroom in it was my favorite part. That had a salty/savory flavor bomb that had me trying to make sure I had one in each bite. Service at the bar was great and I'm glad I decided to stay in for my meal. read more

My wife and I were taking a cruise out of Southampton and needed a place to stay in walking distance of the cruise port. We found just what we were looking for at the White Star . The rooms are clean and modern, sitting above the tavern and restaurant. Baths were large and the towels fluffy. Our room had a coffee maker (which we don't drink) but also a water boiler for our tea. There were also glasses and a wine opener. The White Star sits along Oxford Street, which is a pedestrian only zone with lots of choices for eating and drinking. We stayed on a Wednesday night, but the district was hopping with lots of young professionals and the occasional family or (like us) tourist. Friendly and helpful staff and well priced rooms. An easy stroll to the cruise terminal. Perfect! read more

The tavern faces on to a pedestrian zone lined with bars and restaurants. A lovely warm welcome greeted us at reception located behind the tidy, gleaming bar area. Our room, located two flights of stairs has freshly painted interior with updated furnishings and a comfortable bed. Stairs were made easier because the receptionist helped carry one of our bags up and gave us a run down of the room's amenities. Bar closes at 11. The room has a coffeee maker with lots of tea and coffee choices. Towels are huge and fluffy with a nice sized walk in shower. At the end of our hallway is access to rooftop seating. We ran into another couple staying here who are also on our Princess cruise departing the next day. It is an easy walk to the port from here. Decor includes old photos of the Titanic. Many people on board stayed at this hotel prior to boarding the Titanic. Hmm. read more

We stayed at The White Star Tavern for an evening before boarding a cruise out of Southampton and would strongly recommend others do the same! The inn is centrally located near the old town area and a very short taxi ride to the terminal. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful in guiding our time in the city. The rooms and public spaces were warm and inviting and the food/drinks were excellent. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to the area, but will plan to stay more nights as there is quite a bit to see and do in town. read more

We stayed at the White Star Inn & Tavern and had a wonderful experience. The manager (Bridget) snd the entire staff went above & beyond to make sure we were 100% satisfied. The rooms are well sized, comfortable and clean. The restaurant was delicious both for breakfast and dinner. The bar offered all the standards as well as some unique cocktails. The inn has no elevator so be aware there may be some stairs in your future, but the building is over 100 years old so a logical limitation. I highly recommend this establishment. read more

Another exceptional stay at the White Star Tavern. We enjoyed a pre-cruise stay for a couple days. The location is easily walkable from the train station, even with a suitcase (on roller of course). The historic location is ideal for exploring the city. We enjoyed a very comfortable room with ensuite, and a fresh cooked, full breakfast each morning. Dinner appeared quite nice as well - especially the Sunday roast dinner, however - we were pub hopping an missed it. Next time for certain. The convenience of a full service restaurant and exceptional tavern in the beautiful inn provides travels an option to remain at the inn without venturing out, should they desire (or if the weather dictates). Our thanks also to Bridget, who was very helpful throughout our stay, always greeting us and checking in on us to ensure our comfort. We will definitely be back. read more

I ate at the White Star twice during my two night stay at Southampton and would gladly eat there again if I stayed longer. The night I got in I stopped for dinner since my room was across the street and had the fish and chips. It was excellent, the service was friendly and the food came out quick. The second time was the next morning when I tried their poached eggs with avocado. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the coffee was good and strong. The White Star Tavern is a opulent and well presented bar, with a 40s or 50s style. The ambiance and look of the bar is excellent, but unfortunately is only masking over an otherwise underwhelming experience. The problems begin at the drinks menu, where the options are limited and samey. Basic lagers, run of the mill ale. Even worse is the sheer inefficiency in getting these drinks from the bar staff who seem completely alien to the concept of pour order and multitasking. The food menu is a decent fare but is overpriced for what you get. In fact, overpricing seems to be a common there, with 2 pints and small bowl of bar nuts coming in at £11. So much as I'd love to say the looks matched the experience, unfortunately I cannot. This was consistent over the three times I've been there recently, which is a shame as it wasn't like this a few years ago. read more

The gents tending bar in the evenings were incredibly helpful in every way (from helping access Wifi, to selecting the right cider). I'm very glad we stayed here. This was a faultless evening out and the staff were brilliant. They managed to squeeze me in even when they were fully booked and the food was really high end brasserie Fayre. I had a delicious mackerel starter that had a delicate appearance of something served on Masterchef, a thick, fully-loaded, tender burger and a really clever pud; home made choc chip cookie, sweet panacota and vanilla milk shake. They've also got rooms here but I didn't stay. There was a really good vibe and the staff seemed to be really enjoying their work. read more

The White star is situated in Oxford Street near to ocean village at the bottom end of Southampton. The White Star is elegant and stunning and is used by young and old groups of people as well as couples. The White Star is in a beautiful area in Southampton and is surrounded by lots of other bars and restaurants nearby, but i feel the White Star stands out above all the other restaurants in this area. There is a seating area at the front where you can sit and relax and watch the world go by or you can sit inside on very comfortable seats which gives you the feel that you are sat at home in your own living room. The food is nothing less than first class in my opinion and service was quick and efficient. A place i would go on a saturday night to be wined and dined. read more

The White Star Tavern is a sophisticated bar with luxury accommodation located in Southampton city centre. I stayed there this weekend with my partner visiting family. Although there is no parking at the White Star - there is on street parking available and we found a spot straight away. It is clear that the area, although already busy is undergoing some refurbishment which is good to see. On arrival at the White Star we enquired at the car and were shown up stairs to check in. We were asked if we needed help with luggage and given a full introduction to the hotel, on site staff, facilities and service. We were made to feel incredibly welcome - a personal touch that means a lot. We had booked a room on the second floor - due to reports about noise from the bar. We stayed in room 9 - a deluxe and paid £109 for room only. The room is at the front of the hotel, it is large, freshly decorated with an en-suite bathroom. The decoration is modern and sophisticated and luxurious. There are heavy, lined curtains to block out the light and a comfortable king size bed in which to sleep. The white linen is clean and crisp - we both slept incredibly well. There is attention to detail throughout, a laptop safe, flat screen tv, high quality tea and coffee tray. The bathroom is the ultimate hotel chic with limestone tiles and a huge walk-in monsoon shower. My only complaint would be that I knocked my head on the glass shelf over the sink when washing my face! The bathroom has ample White Company toiletries - a really nice touch. Although there is no room service, the staff essentially told us that they would be happy to see to our every need. Food in the restaurant looked very good - unusual and local dishes at reasonable prices although we did not eat there that night. Breakfast is not included in the room price but is also reasonably priced and available from 09:00 at the weekend. We chose eggs Benedict for £5.50 which were cooked to perfection and utterly delicious. I left the White Star with only one regret, that we could not stay longer. The White Star is warm and welcoming, the staff are genuinely interested in making your stay memorable. I can not recommend the White Star highly enough. read more

Enjoyed a 3 night stay at this delightful, quaint, and very comfortable hotel. Was warmly welcomed by reception (Toma) who graciously accommodated us 5 hrs. earlier than check-in time, after we disembarked QM2. Our large, corner room (Titanic) was attractively appointed and had a lovely, updated bathroom. Each of the 13 rooms is unique, decorated with wonderful maritime touches which celebrate the long history of the Cunard and White Star lines. In the public areas throughout this historic building are marvelous photos, pictures, models, artifacts, and books related to the passenger ship industry. There is a nice rooftop deck for smoking and/or just enjoying the seaport air. There is a very lively bar, plus an excellent restaurant serving gourmet entrees and small bites in the evening, as well as deliciously prepared breakfasts (complimentary), lunch, and desserts. Laundry service is very convenient and inexpensive. The hotel is in a great neighborhood. The staff really go above and beyond expected to pamper their guests. They really know how to run a first class operation! read more
